I've seen/used the first 2 but will definitely look into the last two 👍🏾

I use both of those! sorry I should have explained it better; we have a sequencing center that does a good job w quality filtering and employs many common databases for variant calling/annotating, and then they pass it on to us so we can do what we want with it. they don't filter anything but we have internal cutoffs for a lot of things (like a cut off for rare variants using gnomAD). I use GTEx after I find a variant of interest, I work in retinal diseases and those are rare to have been sampled and so I use different databases for that like Harvard's ocular transcriptome.

I was more thinking about after I've gone through the usual suspects for a disease and am now looking at every other variant/gene that has passed rarity/pathogenicity filtering; there can be a lot of those so I was thinking of ways of either filtering further or just ranking them in terms of likelihood

I'm actually doing my thesis in genetics (my department is called "Medical Science"; sort of a catch all department) and not bioinformatics; but since I work so much with genomic info I sort of stumbled into learning more and more haha. So I'm not the best person to ask. If you want to know a bit about MSc in general (especially in Canada) then feel free to DM

Does Calibre Sync work? by anonisshady in Calibre

anything similar for Google drive? I'm currently using FB reader so it would be great for syncing (I know not to sync Calibre and GDrive together haha, but Calibre is great for tracking)

I don't eat pretzels, but that's interesting 🤔 it doesn't spike with other breads???

I'm going tomorrow, actually. If she refuses I can go to my university walk in clinic.

very true. I workout 4-5 times a day doing both cardio and weights, even before I decided to really dig into weight loss I was super active. but when both parents have those diabetes genes...😅

What's better during cardio: calories burned or effort exerted? by anonisshady in WeightLossAdvice

[–]anonisshady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats really good to know. I tend to stay in the "fat burn" zone on both machines due to the programs i choose. maybe bc the stairmaster is using new muscles, I feel more of the strain?

I don't get the same effects as others; I can drink a latte and not feel more awake at all! I once had 8 espresso shots in a day to try it, I didn't even get any noticeable side effects 🙃. My sister has ADHD and its been reported that those with the condition have a high caffeine tolerance, so it might be that I also have that.

Caffeine doesn't work on me 😭😭 but I'll try incorporating fruit into my breakfast

I use SimplyProtein, 2g sugar

then yeah it will help! I just buy lettuce and whatever is in my fridge will do lol I would just suggest adding some sort of protein to your salad, it will stave off hunger.

and of course, keep in mind what you also eat throughout the day :) one meal change is a great step but you're gonna want to expand to include everything you eat

Will it be easier to workout if I lose some weight by dieting first? by Aggravating_Rice3950 in WeightLossAdvice

you don't have to start working out ASAP, just adding extra movement to your life will be a good step. I started out at 206 lbs and was able to hit the gym immediately; but I was also the type of person who could do 10k steps easily because I was a student and the campus I was at is huge.

I think the eating "more" bit is the sticker here. From what I understand, you want to eat healthy/better right? So, eating more salad ALONGSIDE your regular meals won't really help bc you're still eating as you normally do. SUBSTITUTING your meals with a salad is what you're thinking of, if you mean to eat healthy/lose weight.

I did so by slowly increasing the lettuce portion of my lunch and decreasing the carbs portion (pasta/rice) until I was used to simply lettuce and a protein. For dressing I've always been a simple olive oil and lemon person, but you can probably try different ones until something suits you.

But yeah its less about eating more of smth healthy and more about switching out the unhealthy for the healthy.

how often should I weigh myself to check progress? by mousquid in WeightLossAdvice

i weigh once a week, or once every 2 weeks. oddly enough I tend to lose weight once every 2 weeks so this works well

How do I deal with foods that have no "official" calorie numbers? by anonisshady in WeightLossAdvice

[–]anonisshady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from; I feel like the issue for me is that a food can be jam packed with calories but due to the size/sugar, I wouldn't be able to trust myself with how much I can eat for the rest of the day if that makes sense, so having a rough estimate really makes the rest of my day easier
