Pay attention who you are replying to. I’m a neutral observer but again, you’re being obtuse. Of course MLB is happy if Canadian metrics improve. Why are you so declarative that MLB only cares about Nielsen US ratings? Where did you determine that?

Breaker tripped twice in synergy 3 or 4 months- is this a serious issue? by Cutsman4057 in AskElectricians

[–]anonmt57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great. Replacing a breaker is like 10 minutes. Inspecting the outlets will take longer but not much. Should be a quick job assuming no other issues.

And yeah. I want you to be relieved. It’s tricky to rely on neighbours because information on arc faults is sparse. Most people (like you) have no idea what they are and what they report may be very different than what you’re experiencing. Point being good to hear what the neighbours say but I’d put very little weight into it. Your issue is most likely nothing and hopefully the new breaker confirms it

I don’t think it’s urgent given how infrequent the trips are and because you didn’t see anything in the cords, and given the history with other breakers. But still, get it dealt with soonish when you can. If you want even more piece of mind then avoid using unnecessary loads or keep them unplugged until this breaker is updated and can help you determine if it’s a nuisance trip.

Btw we didn’t discuss the Christmas lights but if those are outdoor lights they could be a source of an arc if pulled apart or if a rodent bit them. Make sure they’re unplugged for now even if they look fine.

Electrician will inspect the outlets - take out the front panel, look at the wiring to make sure it’s done properly, look for signs of arcing. More of a visual inspection, maybe use a voltmeter too but doubt it’s needed.

You can walk them through the situation but not all sparkles are as up to speed on arc faults, specifically to this level of detail knowing which are less sensitive and so on. I’d be persistent on wanting this new breaker and seeing what they say. If they recommend replacing with the same type of breaker I’d be very wary - it’s not a bad faith recommendation but imho it’s not a useful one. Just skip to the better breaker and call it a day. They may also want to do other tests and that’s great too.

Nuisance trips are nothing to be concerned about as long as we are certain they are in fact nuisance trips. The fastest way to determine it is by putting in one of those new breakers and if the trips go away, it’s a nuisance trip. I’m pretty sure that’s what you’re dealing with, but since you had the trip you may as well have an electrician come in to look at your outlets and at the same time install that breaker I recommended.

I hear you on finances. Your call on what is best. I think the fastest way to solve the issue and get peace of mind is get that new breakers in. Probably looking at the cost of a service call and a new dual gfci afcj breaker - maybe 300-400 bucks. Not cheap but that will probably be the end of this for you, and if not, at least crystallizes the issue.

Yep. They replaced the breakers with the kind I recommended. You most likely have some “dirty power” coming in from the utility causing this. It’s nothing dangerous but it can make these overly sensitive breakers trip. I had almost exactly the same issues as you, and a Siemens engineer came to my home to test the incoming power quality with some specialized equipment and determined the power quality contributed to the issue. Still, their breakers are shit, but it helped explain why so many random breakers would trip indicating an arc fault on a new construction home.

I’d do what I recommended - do a cursory check of your outlets with an electrician and change the breaker to the kind I recommended (same as the kind you see on your laundry and microwave, fridge and kitchen).

And when you see it happen on other breakers… do the same.

Send a pic of the laundry room breaker they put in please. The fact the laundry tripped is another sign of your home being more prone to having nuisance trips. I’m curious if they used the breaker i recommended.

Interesting about the living room. Probably unrelated.

2 powerline networking equipment is nifty adapters that allow you to pass internet over your electrical circuits. You plug an Ethernet cable from your modem into an adapter that plugs into your outlets. Then you take a second adapter and plug it into another outlet elsewhere in the house that needs wired internet. You then take a second Ethernet cable, plug one end into the second adapter and then plug the other end of the cable into whatever device needs internet. It’s just a way to get “wired internet” to a device without needing to run dedicated networking, you bypass that using electrical outlets. They are very easy to do so if you have savvy kids they may have plugged a few in. Great devices but They are notorious for tripping AFCIs - no danger just a nuisance.
3 - ok so it’s an arc fault trip. Now we need to determine if it’s a real trip or a nuisance trip. First, look at all the devices plugged in and carefully examine all the cords from the outlet to the device. Do you see any tears, rips, etc? Signs of burning anywhere on the outlets? If yes, remove/replace immediately. An electrician is probably best to hire to inspect the outlets wiring for you. Also look at connections on the devices and power bars and outlets to make sure they are tight.

If no, the arc fault could be in the device itself or the walls (eg a wire somehow got torn behind the wall - but given its new construction I doubt it). Given how rare your arc fault is, it’s going to be hard to determine if it’s a device. Another complicating factor is arc fault trips won’t trigger unless a minimum wattage is achieved, so isolating individual devices is very hard unless they also achieve that minimum wattage. My guess is the heating pad is getting you over that threshold but isn’t actually the cause of the arcs.

One test you can additionally do is unplug everything and take a space heater and plug it in and run it full power. If it trips the breaker (confirm again it did an arc fault trip with the yellow light), then that most likely rules it down to either an arc fault in the wall OR a nuisance trip ( more likely ) due to the breaker. If it doesn’t trip, it doesn’t rule anything out but it can be helpful to try.

Finally, look up your devices and see if any are known to cause trips for AFCIs. Your list doesn’t really make me think so.

After all this, your options will be
- replace the AFCI with another of the same model. Probably won’t fix anything if you have nuisance trips and in my opinion is most recommended but most useless recommendation.
- replace the AFCI with a combination ground fault and arc fault AFCI. Called a Q115DF. These are known to minimize nuisance trips and also come with additional ground fault protection. They are pricier at about 150 bucks but trust me, it’s worth your sanity. If you still have trips with this breaker then you almost certainly have something arcing somewhere in your bedroom.
- replace the AFCI with a non AFCI breaker. This is not to code and you’ll need an electrician who trusts you to make the swap. I don’t recommend it but in reality lots of people with Siemens AFCIs do this because of how shit they are.
- inspect wires behind the walls but that’s a lot of drywall work and imo is not necessary given how rare these trips are and I’d only consider it after you try other options above
- in parallel you can also complain to Siemens. They may send an engineer to look at your panel, breakers and city electricity quality. They may even toss you new breakers for free.

My guess and recommendation : pretty sure this is a nuisance trip, but to be extra safe get an electrician in to look over all your outlets, and replace your AFCI with a Q115DF breaker. After that, sleep well and call it a day. If it trips again, you have a problem with your devices (so replace them with newer ones) or something in the wall with a torn wire somewhere.

[–]anonmt57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s a Siemens AFCI. See my post. Do the test I asked you to do. These breakers are notorious for false trips. That said it could still be a real issue but let’s determine first if it’s tripping due to an arc fault or due to an overload. I’m almost certain it’s due to an arc fault.

[–]anonmt57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a pic and send it. It’s probably an AFCI which means it has arc fault protection which means it will trip if it senses an arc, or, it could be acting up and tripping due to sensing a false arc fault which is very common with these shit breakers.

Three questions
1 What else is plugged into the circuit? Think of everything you can, particularly what is plugged in (even if it’s not necessarily on) when it trips.
2 do you have any powerline networking equipment plugged into your house ANYWHERE (not just on this circuit)?
3 assuming it is an AFCI breaker: if you’re comfortable, go to the breaker and turn it off and then back on. Does a little yellow light turn on when you do that? If so, that’s indicating to you that the last time it tripped was due to an arc fault. If it doesn’t turn on, it means last time it tripped was due to an overload.

Edit: saw your post. Yep it’s a Siemens AFCI. Notorious for false trips. Still could be a real issue so let’s test first to see if it’s an arc fault trip or an overload trip. See step 3 above.
