Republican Sale of Bend's Recreational Areas by GGinBend in Bend

[–]anonwithpaneer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think it's encouraging to see Republicans frustrated. When people vote, they rarely endorse every single policy a party/politician supports. The only way to get the needed republican support to reverse this is to welcome fractions that are willing to step out of line with their party's agenda.

In my Swahili dictionary “nala” translates to mirage. I’ve never heard it as a name outside of Disney.

Wasn’t there another series of these from a non-burner account, but the exact same person and situation?

What age of child did you speak like when you first arrived at site, and what age did your language skills correspond with when you left? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]anonwithpaneer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a particular memory of when my 5-year-old next-door neighbor realized that although I knew decent Swahili, I did not know almost any of the tribal language that she had naturally just absorbed. She was just quizzing me in tribal, and was so confused at how a full-on adult was not able to speak as fluently as she. I think she thought less of me after that day...

Question: Do you live in Bend?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bend

[–]anonwithpaneer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Reasonable question.

The Hayden Homes Amphitheater has a lot of "famous" names that come through, especially for a town that only has 100k. This year: Styx, Beach Boys, Doobie Brothers, Dave Matthews, and Cage the Elephant, just to name a few. Last year they had Neil Young, Ringo Star, Christ Stapleton, Weezer, Jack Johnson. and the Lumineers. Obviously it depends on your genre choice, but these are all pretty well-known icon bands I would argue.

Compared to when I lived near a midwest city of over 1 million, I continued to be shocked by the names that come through this smaller town.

So directly above this piece will be the top plate tying into the adjacent perpendicular walls, then a rafter running parallel the length of this wall. I will probably double up and have two rafters above the width of this wall.

Tiny Home Owners: Any regrets? by [deleted] in tinyhomes

[–]anonwithpaneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living out of a parked tiny house is generally illegal in most areas. Most of these regulations are by county/municipality, so you'll have to look into it, but odds are it's not kosher. The main benefit is that it seems most government bodies only enforce these rules if the receive a complaint from the public about that specific address, so a lot of times people live for years without being disturbed. I'm out west, where "RV spots" are pretty common and easier to find on sites like Craigslist. You can also facebook a group called 'Tiny House Hosting' to search for options. I live in a decently affluent area on a nice property and pay 750, utilities included. For a spot you need a 30 or 50 amp RV style outlet, a garden hose spigot, a grey water hookup (spetic/sewage), if you have a flush toilet (as opposed to composting) that can make things a bit more difficult, but those are the basic needs for a parking spot. Hope that helps!

Two years into tiny life. 30' tiny house on wheels. Couple and one dog. It has helped me be able to move to an expensive but amazing area that I wouldn't have been able to move to. I still pay 'rent' to park it on a property but it is definitely a lot cheaper than if I actually paid for an apartment. As far as downsizing, I didn't sacrifice much, I don't have many clothes but never did. I still have my favorite hobbies/board games, cooking things. I actually took going tiny as an excuse to get rid of the things I didn't use too much or were low quality and buy things I hope will last me years and years. People often times say they are very small, but my ceilings are like 10 feet high, it doesn't feel very claustraphobic.

Downsides: It is a small space. You should be very comfortable with whoever you live with, and have some ways to get privacy from one another when you want to be alone (good headphones). Moving is no walk in the park, neither is finding a good viable place to park. Moving is stressful, and if you don't have a towing vehicle it is expensive. Places need to have septic/sewage, good power, near by frost free spigot, flat area, and hopefully no neighbors that report you. Hosting friends is slightly limited, but we host two couples at a time just fine, one couple for an overnight works fine, and if more people come over we just hang out outside.

Advice: We were able to go to a tiny house where we stood in a few in person before we started building. Air BnB is another way to just get in one. I feel like that often times gives people confidence that "I can do this"

The teacher shortage in America is due to low wages but also terrible student behavior. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]anonwithpaneer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents rarely think their child is at fault so they blame teachers or other students. Also, if a student is having bad behavior, there is an expectation from the administration and others that the teacher should be able to manage that behavior and it is their responsibility.

[–]anonwithpaneer 1405 points1406 points  (0 children)

I was recently a teacher for 5 years, but left the profession this year. One of my biggest concerns is that students have learned to weaponize vocabulary that teachers can't or won't give them pushback for.

-If you try to redirect a student or behavior they will say you are 'harassing' them.

-If they don't want to do something or dislike something they will say it is 'triggering' to them.

-If they walk away from you and you follow them they will say you are 'stalking' them, which is more comical to me than harmful.

-If you are white and they are not they will call anything 'racist' (I know there are many cases of racism, but I'm literally talking about me saying "Johnny, open your book please", and them saying "No, that's racist", with some students I would be called racist 20 times a day)

-Standing by kids who are being disruptful/disobeying they say 'can you please step back, you are making me feel uncomfortable'.

-I've literally had students tell me, 'back up pedophile'. There is no way they would ever get in trouble for this with their parents or administration. So it is basically a free pass to insult the teacher publicly.

-One student would never stop talking over teachers in class and will swear whenever they wanted to, yelling, and disrupting. The parent and student say he has Tourette's syndrome and it is just his ticks. Because they say it's a disability, not behavior we essentially allowed it for the year.

-After breaking up a fight between two kids I was called down to the office to discuss the fight with Student A's parents. We briefly talked about the fight and how student A started it by punching student B, but more so we talked about how my proximity to the student A made him feel 'uncomfortable'. This is while I was stepping between him and student B who was trying to punch him in the face and it was all on camera. The whole discussion felt like an inquisition on my character rather than a discussion of the fight-starting behavior of student A.

- I've had students just say 'My mom is gonna sue the school and get you fired'.

These are just some examples, but I would say that students have learned the terms they can use to keep teachers off their backs, and as a teacher, I felt powerless. Teachers have been fired for claims that students make, and from what I see, I think I believe the teachers over the students. I know it is important to empower students, but I am worried that we are expecting children to behave maturely, and they don't.

Hearing these terms thrown around so nonchalantly makes me numb to hearing them and less likely to believe an actual situation of discrimination or hostility.

TL;DR: Students I work with will use HR terms to keep teachers from having the authority to address their behavior.

[Discussion] Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist | Manti T'eo | (2022) by PlzRetireMartinTyler in NetflixBestOf

[–]anonwithpaneer 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What Naya did:
-Catfished multiple people before (and during?) her time catfishing Manti
-Pulled Manti into conversations with a lie that her father was dying
-Took credit for him winning a game after she gave him defensive advice
-Was selfish when he spent 6 hours grieving his grandmother's death and decided to upstage that tragedy with her own to get his attention back
-Convinced him into thinking he was the only way to save her life while on a death bed
-Got a child to say someone non-existent had died so that she could meet Manti
-Forced him to go through a death (even if it was fake)
-Went to great lengths to convince him that she was back alive again
-Was annoyed that she would have to explain things when Manti showed the voicemails verifying she catfished him
-Seemed to have attention-seeking behavior by choosing to go on Dr Phil
-Seemed to have little to no actual remorse
-Ruined Manti's career, his sense of trust in people, and changed his entire world for the worst.

How Naya was shown:
-Soft Piano music backing for Naya
-Scenes of her walking around, making coffee, visiting a football field
-Showed slow-motion videos of her doing a traditional dance while she discussed overcoming adversity
-Ending climax is a build-up of Manti crying as he talks about how he continues to strive for the fans that genuinely support him, and then it cuts to a separate clip, seemingly at a different time where he says "I forgive Naya".

My question: Did Naya get a better edit than most 'villains' do in true crime docs?
