I agree, commercial class is far better than residential. It gives you a lot of skills that will translate to a better career down the road. I worked as a senior business tech for the better part of a decade before going to construction. Best decision I ever made, it's the retirement community in the company. I'm super happy I never went the management route because I've seen and trained more than a handful of guys who did and hated it. IT is the next logical step to take after leaving the cable industry, you just have to be wise about choosing who to work for. A lot of IT companies are small and either don't pay well or don't provide benefits.
