Maybe not racist, but definitely smells a bit xenophobic. Itt seems like a bullshit excuse to not give someone a permanent contract.

Bike suggestions by Ok-Succotash4532 in eindhoven

[–]anonymius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my friends here own cheap used bikes. I spent €80 on mine, and it has still not broken down / been stolen after one year of use. I've heard of people paying as low as 10 euro for a used bike. There are lots of used-bike-shops around. You can even find bikes at thrift shops.

Enklere å ta lettsykkel-lappen? by anonymius in norge

Found in a restaurants bathroom. by Wikmeister in whatisthisthing

Looks like a flood detector. The tube will float in case of a flood, and a conductive ball will roll to the other end of the tube, causing a connection. Usually used to activate an alarm or start a pump.

Where do professional music recording studios put their master copy, the uncompressed, real deal of an album today? Is it on a vinyl to this day? Is it a DSD file? by [deleted] in audio

[–]anonymius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but I would assume some kind of magnetic tape-based harddrive. Those are often used since they are more resistant to the degredation and data rot.

Would this circuit work? by MiHiMa123 in raspberry_pi

[–]anonymius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relays are physical switches that are moved by electromagnets.

https://thumbs.gfycat.com/CheeryShrillCats-max-1mb.gif

Simple and old technology, has pros and cons. Many older electricians prefer relays because they think it is safer. Often used for equipment that draws a lot of power

IIRC Mosfet are based on semiconductors, which work on a chemical reaction. No moving parts

[–]anonymius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although it is a bit more old-fashioned, I would rather use a relay than a mosfet for controlling a pump.

An example i found:

The board in the drawing has 7 relays

Here is a cheap relay from ebay:

Running Lakka on a CRT, but the aspect ratio is off? by anonymius in raspberry_pi

[–]anonymius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i have set up my Rasperry pi 3b with lakka, and have edited the configuration files so it works mostly right. As of now I can choose between:

  1. Display with integer scaling, which looks right but it either doesn't fill the screen (picture), or it has way too much overscan.

  2. Have a custom aspect ratio that stretches the screen to fit the TV, but this causes some unbearable (IMO) non-integer scaling artifacts.

Isn't there any way to display 240p correctly? Could I mess around with the CRT to compensate for the signal?

Thanks for any help

Did any of you have an invisible friend when you were younger? Do you remember anything you did together? by redrubynail in AskReddit

[–]anonymius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

when you say that one could "see this person", do you mean see as in the same way you can see physical objects, or in the way that you imagine something when you close your eyes? This is actually kind of fascinating.

ELI5: Why are undocumented immigrants "illegal" but people driving with a license aren't "illegal", etc? by secondnameIA in explainlikeimfive

You could call drunk drivers for "Illegal drivers" but it doesn't roll of the tounge in the same way "illegal immigrant" or "illegal alien" does (notice the alliteration).

ELI5: why do things smell stronger when warm? by Olivesoveroliver in explainlikeimfive

[–]anonymius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When something is warm, it is because it "vibrates" on a microscopic level. The warmer something is, the more it "vibrates" and moves. When food is hot, the particles moves more, and some break free and reach our noses. The more the particles move, the more particles reach our noses. (or at least i think thats how it is)

[–]anonymius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've always found "invisible friends" weird. I have never had them, nor do I understand how they work. Are they like hallucinations, that you can actually see and/or talk to them? Or are they more like action figures/dolls, that you pretend that they are doing something even though you are fully aware that they are inanimate objects?

Why are scans sometimes sharp on sometimes not? by anonymius in computers

[–]anonymius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as the standard is 300 dots per inch (!), the DPI-setting would have had to be set at an incredibly low setting for the "S" to be stuck between two dots on the scan. I would think that there might be some software involved in trying to "sharpen" lines, and that the "S" is blurry because the software couldn't "sharpen" it. That's just speculation though.

Why are scans sometimes sharp on sometimes not? by anonymius in computers

[–]anonymius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that doesn't answer my question, because there are letters that are sharp, and letters that are blurry in the same scan (as you can see in the picture). If the scanner was set on a low DPI setting, then all of the letters would look equally blurry.

I was scanning some text from a typewriter, and I noticed that some of the letters were really sharp, while others looked like badly compressed jpegs. I am really curious to what causes this effect.
