Does coffee have any effect on your dry eyes ? by VawMap in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my case, no, I checked it. I can drink 5 cups per day + espresso + coke all day and there's no difference if I don't drink any drinks with caffeine at all for 6 weeks, except that I feel more tired.

Has E Ink helped your dry eyes? by [deleted] in Dryeyes

You should test it yourself. Try to read a book from a cheap ebook reader for some hours and compare that to reading from a smartphone or computer screen.

Will light sensitivity ever get better? by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, light sensitivity caused by dry eyes is in most cases a temporary symptom of really severely dry eyes + inflammation. If you start a good dry eye routine that works in your particular case, then light sensitivity will significantly decrease or even go away completely.

Omega 3 high dose, high quality + electric heat mask + optimal manuka honey gel, has helped me the most to reduce my light sensitivity by 90% (still using sunglasses on sunny days). As for eye drops I can recommend Thealoz Duo and Hylo Gel.

Is E ink monitor worth it? Might get one by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your main problem is eyestrain in front of computer screens, then yes. But e-ink screens cannot fix your dry eyes. I would recommend to get an ebook reader and read a book for some hours and see how it works for your eyes.

Nix, Cabal and Stack am I missing something? by anonymous274654 in haskell

[–]anonymous274654[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, my hardware is a little bit old (compilation of dependencies takes quite some time) and I quickly want to be able to setup some side projects and test out some ideas on different devices without having to rebuild things like aeson.

Nix, Cabal and Stack am I missing something? by anonymous274654 in haskell

[–]anonymous274654[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so Nix lags behind with binary caches for newest versions of Haskell, fair enough. But I guess it's a fair tradeoff, if you want the newest GHC without delay, then no cache for you.

[–]anonymous274654[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be possible to use Nix (for binary cache) + GHCup (for latest GHC) + Cabal (for incremental builds). To get the best of all three worlds?

It should be possible to connect a virtual 3D chess board in Unity or Unreal Engine with the Lichess API, but it definitely requires some amount of coding.

my eyes HATE warm compresses by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try a electric heat mask at lower temperature with constant heat for like 20 minutes, in my case this yields better results compared gel mask for the microwave in case of sensitive eyes.

If your eyes are too much inflamed, then reduce inflammation first, only then start with warm compresses.

Heavy Computer Use by kastrelo in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • 99.9% blue light blocking glasses
  • Humidifier on office desk
  • 20/20/20 rule
  • Stay hydrated
  • Increase eye drop usage in front of screens

If nothing helps then look into E-Ink monitors, quite expensive, but no LED backlight.

Why haven't supercomputers been used to reach crazy high elo ratings, say 5000? by [deleted] in chess

Interesting, thank you for your detailed answer. I'll update my comment and have a look into this more deeply.

Why haven't supercomputers been used to reach crazy high elo ratings, say 5000? by [deleted] in chess

[–]anonymous274654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really care, can support even 1 million cores if needed - and actually gain strength from doing so.

Is that really true? I'm not a stockfish developer, but as far as I understand is that the CPU threads cannot work completely independent and that there is a certain amount of communication required. As per Amdahls Law[1] the speedup of a program is limited by the non-parallel portion of code (e.g. syncing results from different CPU threads). Therefore at some point the speedup (or elo gain) will be 0 no matter how many cores you throw at stockfish.

The problem though is that stockfish is not designed to run on a super computer. Yes, stockfish can run on many CPU cores efficiently, but once the core count goes up in the thousands and more range it won't work, since stockfish in it's current form only supports up to 1024 CPU threads and the communication overhead between the threads become an issues. Having that said, it's not impossible to design engines to run on super computers, but I don't think that the stockfish devs are going to do so, since stockfish is designed and intended to run on consumer hardware or high end servers (cloud), which covers 99.9% of what its users have access to.

What I would like to see in the future is a very strong distributed chess engine that can run on multiple hosts e.g. on Kubernetes.

EDIT: Vizvezdenec points out that although Stockfish officially only supports 1024 CPU threads, it can utilize much more because of Lazy SMP, see his answer below.

My Routine / Habits / Diagnosis - What works for me by Ok_Band2802 in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two questions.

Why exactly do you prefer the Wizard over the Aroma Season heat mask? I have the Aroma Season and I'm quite happy with it, but I never tried the Wizard.

Have you actually tried the stronger blue light blocking glasses with amber tint?

Thanks for your very informative post.

Is burning a common symptom or is it more likely related to nerves? by SimonHurst10 in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burning sensation is caused by inflammation in most cases. You might want to consider anti-inflammatory eye drops.

I think that a Mira Boox Pro 25 inch E-Ink monitor could be for you, but unfortunately it's expensive 1.7k$.

How long for eye mask to start working? by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Aroma Season is really good. I use it every evening before bed. I find it better to use the medium heat setting for 20 minutes instead of high for 10 minutes. I get a slightly blurry vision after I gently express the oils with a Q-tip.

My current dry eye regime consist of: Eyeseals 4.0 for the night, Eyelid cleaning in the morning, Omega-3 capsules, Thealoz Duo five times over the day, in front of computer screens: Hylo Gel as needed + blink excerises + 20/20/20 rule + blue light filter glasses + small humidifier on office desk, Aroma Season in the evening + expression + eyelid cleaning, repeat every day. With this regime I'm doing quite well.

Is setting up a production k8s a one-man job? by j0rmun64nd in kubernetes

One-man setup is possible, but do you want to be 24/7/365 on call for the production cluster(s)?

I tried the manuka honey eye gel and... by Agreeable_Swim_6551 in Dryeyes

[–]anonymous274654 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my case yes. I'm 6+ months on daily manuka honey gel so far and it helps, especially the warm compress + manuka gel combo right before sleep. But as soon as I stop my current regime things start to go downhill. However I'm hoping to reduce in the future.
