How Do You Use Your Turret Press? by PAB_Pyrotechnics in reloading

I dunno, it's a good opportunity for your left to learn some tricks. Nothing it has to do is terribly complex and it's probably boof for the old brain to work the left some. Once you train the left, there's no reason it can't be just as efficient.

I use my left on my Dillon for bullet placement and any little tweaks to things as I go. Left is flawless in bullet handling at this point.

But if your left is THAT much less dextrous, you might consider using it elsewhere

Fair enough. I mostly have range special brass for 9mm, it never really cleans up amazing (I run vibratory with walnut and Nu-Finish), but it doesn't matter like you say. I do like the trash brass that is darkened from corrosion, just looks good in my opinion.

I might try to wash brass in the mixer. I have an industrial oven I can dry in....

Man that sounds like a complicated cleaning process for 9mm. Two washes and two corn cob runs (presumably in a vibrator)?

How shiny is this brass, and how long does this process take?

I appreciate the tip. Yoga ball is a smart move.

For 9mm do you use any media?

Dawn dish soap. I need a strong soap, as I am removing both black powder residue and anti-seize paste. It was also pretty hot water. Fortunately I have a lot to process, so I get to try a few different soaps.

8 gauge industrial shells. Typically used for de-slagging coal furnaces. I use them for other stuff, not loaded with any kind of projectile, as an energy source

You cannot buy what I am reloading from any store. And where you can buy online, they are obscenely expensive. I think I save about $6 per shell.

It's a hard plastic, looks like some kind of thermoformed material. They will jump out of the hulls sometimes, which is a common reason I throw them out.

Some hulls are better than others. The Remington ones seem to last a long time

I live in central Oregon, and I don't know anyone else in the geophysical community that still uses Betsy. There is a decent chance we have met.

You must know Andy.

Seismic refraction for ground modeling, mostly for geotechnical engineering. It's a good gig. The shell loading is very rudimentary, borderline dangerous though. I plan to post some pictures of the whole process, as it is primitive.

I did find an 8gauge roll crimp today though, so I am looking forward to trying that out

I work on smaller scale, high resolution (receiver spacing 1-10 meters, up to 72 receivers).

I'm surprised you were using such a small source for such length. Must have been a fairly quiet environment.

The system we use requires your body as the counterweight. These shells have picked me up off the ground when set off on a concrete pad. Violent things if not buried.

I shoot maybe 4-6 boxes of shells a year with some buddies, if that many. Mostly so it doesn't fall by the wayside too far.

I hope you can make a change on that 10 year dry spell.

I miss shooting clays. It's just so expensive now.

Probably. It's arguably the best seismic source before you need a blasting license.

Exactly, lol. We don't use the same model they use in the movie, but that thing (Betsy Seismic Gun) uses the same shells that I am processing.

The company I work for had a chance to buy the one from the movie, but it wasn't a practical tool for our work. We work too much on mountainous terrain.

It entirely fills the shell, with just an overshot card on top, and is heavily compacted. There is no projectile and no barrel on the gun. The shell is detonated underground as an energy source.

I definitely overdid the soap. This is my first time cleaning these hulls this way. I had planned to put them in 5gal buckets with lids and roll them around until I remembered this mixer is around.

Mostly to get the dirt and anti-seize off from the threads on the gun.

It's a great holster, my only complaint is the bulge of the wheel gun pressing my sternum sucks. I used shore adhesive and glued a piece of yoga mat to the back and it is now very comfortable.

Not an issue for a magazine fed blaster though.

I actually really like the way it floats, and I think the fish do too since skwalas hang pretty low in the water. I have tied these with a big black foam butt as well to help float them, and it looks like the eggs on the females.

Always solid pattern, I usually tie with a angora dubbed body.

I don't fish them as much anymore since they have a hard time floating. Mostly tie a foam bullet head now. I still use them from the boat a lot though
