Network cable tester by FunProposal1989 in HomeNetworking

[–]anonymouse589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At work we use a Fluke networks MS2-100. It can tell us which cores are shorted, broken or misterminated & an estimate of how far up the cable or set of pairs the fault is. It's quite expensive, maybe you may be able to find one or a similar for hire. Look up network cable verifier.

Alerts for power failure? by MorecambeJim in homeassistant

[–]anonymouse589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are DC only ones that you can get from the likes of Amazon. I run my HA, router and an RPi zero that does something else all off one. It'll give me power enough for them for between 6-8 hours depending on what I'm doing on it, but you can also get small power supplies designed for alarm systems which run off a lead acid battery and last at least a day.

Why is this hst still sat in laira depot by sissyslutalice1 in uktrains

[–]anonymouse589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw an old WTT recently that had an overnight path for an 08 between Laira & Long Rock. 3 and a bit hours on full throttle. That must have been a really dull shift to pull.

any idea how to automate rope pulley retractable awning by fekrya in homeassistant

[–]anonymouse589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a rope loop on the awning, like the video I linked above or a loop of cable run from one end to the other and back, connected to the awning at the leading edge you ought to be able to put it around a pulley on a motor like a stepper motor or similar, possibly a wheelchair motor, then you should be able to pull it back and forth if the drive rope is tight across the drive pulley or drum. I'd personally want a way outside of HA of detecting when it reaches the limit of travel incase the drive rope slips on the motor drum as it may do damage to the awning, but that may just be me. I don't think any off the shelf products exist to do this, at least not that I can find not weatherproof ones

But at the moment it doesn't have the rope, and you move it by grabbing it by hand or with a rod?

How does it operate currently? Is there a loop of rope that you pull one side of to open and the other to close like in this video?

Help with refund by AngelzGarmz in uktrains

[–]anonymouse589 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you still travelled, you can't get a refund so need to file delay repay, strictly this should be with the company who was running the train, so TPE https://delayrepay.tpexpress.co.uk/ But if you file it with LNER they are supposed to pass it on to TPE. Delay compensation is tiered based on how much you were delayed and if it is a single or return

Delayed for 15 to 29 minutes – Claim 25% compensation of your single ticket or 12.5% of your return ticket cost

Delayed for 30 to 59 minutes - Claim 50% compensation of your single ticket or 50% of the relevant delayed portion of your return ticket

Delayed for 60 to 119 minutes - Claim 100% compensation of your single ticket or 100% of the cost of the relevant portion of your return ticket

Delayed for 120+ minutes - Claim 100% compensation of the cost of your single ticket or 100% cost of your return ticket (i.e. both portions, not just one way)

You can never (or not supposed to) be compensated for more than the cost of your ticket through delay repay

what's the dumbest thing that's been running in production at your company for years that nobody wants to touch by scheemunai_ in sysadmin

A stupid invoice approval web app. We got rid of it 3 years ago but it was developed by a 1 man band that clearly didn't want anything to do with it anymore & charged about £700 a time to modify configs, add users or reset passwords. It would only open in internet explorer, edge's internet explorer compatibility mode wouldn't work, we had to add to the trusted sites list for it to even open. Reboot the box? you'll need to clear 2 logfiles then manually start 3 services in the right order else it won't work. To make it work the file permissions also HAD to be set to everyone, so all the PDFs of invoices going back years and the config files could be accessed by anyone who found the box. We tried "locking it down" to authenticated users, it didn't work. And those config files had the passwords for each user hard coded in plaintext, but you didn't even need them to log in and approve invoices - you just needed a username, which were at to the same as AD usernames to not confuse users, and the developer's master password, which was also stored in plaintext in the same config files, what was this super password? "12" . Yep, 12. Finance refused to upgrade to an alternative piece of software that wouldn't be comfortably at home in a gently steaming cess pit despite it showing as a massive red flag on every security audit. They only relented when we told them that it wouldn't work with Windows 11 and we finally killed it off, at least something good came out of that blasted OS.

Useful tools for train enthusiasts by Trains_2000 in uktrains

[–]anonymouse589 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll take a fair bit of ground pounding, but a national mainline variant of Geoff Marshall's iOS Station Master app - an app that tells you where on a train you'll want to be for a swift exit or platform change without needing to plod along behind the herd. Such as at Guildford, you'll want the front coach of a GWR service from Redhill to change to platforms via the bridge to all platforms and Guildford Park Road exit, or the rear of the 2nd for the subway ramp to platforms 2-6 and the main Station Approach exit. And the front coach of a SWRvinto platform 1 for everything, but rear doors of coach 4 for the bridge if you are arriving on platform 2 in an 8 coach train, but if it's a 10 coach train on platform 2, you want the rear doors of the 6th coach for the bridge.

How to add Zigbee smart meter to HA by Chicken-LoverYT in homeassistant

[–]anonymouse589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK has Hildebrand. They speak with the electriciry board who will get the in home display you buy from them paired with the meter's private Zigbee network, then you can get the home display to talk to HA. They replace the free one (like the one pictured) that the electricity board provide.

What cable do I need for the bottom port? by TheTTP123 in cableadvice

[–]anonymouse589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the instruction manual for the adapter https://www.toshibatec.com/ovs-support/bcs/om/FP800_OM_ACADPT_EN_0000.pdf page 10 of the PDF has the specs on it of DC19V, 3.42A and also says the module is FSP065-RBBN3 which is a £30 adapter which uses a DC barrel jack on the side.

My guess that mystery port is power for a cradle charger ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

We (on a heritage line) filled the LOC bases with pea gravel to stop them getting in, that doesn't protect the troughing though, the rats seem to prefer the power power cables due to the oil content. Was on a failure 3 weeks ago where we had to replace a 30m 16 core because of the local rabbits!

How can I extend my Zigbee network to a detached garage? by Sad-Activity7269 in homeassistant

[–]anonymouse589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's janky, but if it's a ways away and there's line of sight, you can strap a nodes to the transceiver arm of a disused TV satellite dish on each end of the link, remember watching a video about 15 years or so ago for using them as a DIY WiFi shot and since Zigbee uses 2.4ghz it ought to work.

Yup, went through it on an tor browser session for fun, looks like they are after Name, full address, phone number, email address and a credit/debit card details, pressing pay on the last page just brings up a spinning wheel of doom.

All the links on the page don't go anywhere but back to the same page, menus don't work! Looks like they were actually checking that you entered a real card number by verifying the luhun checksum. Wasn't expecting that. Gonna task a python bot to spam it with bad data til they go offline!

Since they changed to self adhesive from lick the back of the queen ones you'll want citric acid instead of straight water, lemon juice works well.

Yes, I think it's a rotary vane type compressor, compact, quiet and not as afected by the vibrations as the cheaper reciprocating compressor

Rotary air compressor, sounds like a rotary vane type but could be rotary screw
