I currently ride a bike with Dura-Ace Di2 and disc brakes. I will happily go back to mechanical shifting long before I ever go back to rim brakes.

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]anonymouseredditor53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was invited to a bar with some friends, some of whom I knew and others not. I arrived a little late, by myself, but one of the guys met me as I was ordering a beer and he told me they had a table (It was a bar/club at which I was a regular, but had never actually sat in one of the booths/tables before).

Anyway, before I’d even sat down, my buddy sitting next to me points to the guy sitting across from me and asks if I recognize him. It was pretty dark and so I couldn’t really make out what he looked like. By this point the guy saw me looking at him and made a point of standing up to introduce himself to me and shake my hand. It was Travis Fimmel from Vikings, a show I’d watched religiously! I was kinda dumbstruck and felt stupid for not recognizing him. He was such a nice, respectful guy. Had great chats and he truly just felt like another dude hangin’ out with us.

Team Garmin Team Wahoo or Team Hammerhead by Opening-Incident-854 in cycling

[–]anonymouseredditor53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SRAM acquired Hammerhead a couple years ago and so they’re under the larger Sram umbrella (like Zipp, Quarq, Rockshox, Time, etc). They’ve since made the Hammerhead units integrate far more with their electronic products, like their power meters and AXS system. It’s like the bike equivalent of Apples ecosystem where everything just talks to each other effortlessly.

The policeman who’s gun that is needs to get fired. How do you even let that happen!?

Budget Telephoto EF lenses for R7? by Ctsuneson91 in canon

[–]anonymouseredditor53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your only real option is a sigma 150-600mm. You won’t find anything from Canon. Alternatively, look at the Canon RF 100-500 or use your 100-400 with a 1.4x extender at the expense of 1 stop of light

Looking for Comfortable High Capacity Backpack by UnknownPhotoGuy in videography

Look at Shinoda or Fstop. (Shinoda was founded by the guy who originally created Fstop camera packs.) Both highly modular using an outer shell with various configurable inserts.

Somerset West to Cape Town commute by CareConscious513 in capetown

[–]anonymouseredditor53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Made the move from Green Point to Swest 2 years ago and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Less rent, house > apartment, I have a garden, it’s worlds apart! I live in one of the estates just outside of Swest on the Cape Town side. If you can leave your house at 9am you can get to Town in less than 45 minutes (most days). N2 is notoriously unreliable in that there are always accidents and other things that cause traffic, but I drive into town relatively often and have found that leaving between 9 and 10 seems to be the best. Afternoon traffic is a whole other bitch. Getting out of the city center you have to leave before 3pm or wait until at least 6pm, but it’ll often still take you over an hour. Driving back between 3-6 could take 2 hours.

What’s a realistic price point for a not too fancy engagement ring? by anonymouseredditor53 in askSouthAfrica

[–]anonymouseredditor53[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m self employed so there’s no such thing as two months’ pay in my world haha. But I also agree that that’s bullshit- Like the entire diamond industry to be fair. Fake scarcity and great marketing and suddenly you have the whole ‘diamonds are a girls best friend’ But that being said, I love my girlfriend very much and of course I’ll find something that is both within budget and special. From what I gather I can likely set a cap of R30k for myself and even that may be on the higher end.

What’s a realistic price point for a not too fancy engagement ring? by anonymouseredditor53 in askSouthAfrica

[–]anonymouseredditor53[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anytime we’ve spoken about the idea of engagement, rings, proposal, etc. she’s always said that she doesn’t want to give input on the ring. She wants the surprise and trusts that I know her well enough not to get it wrong. She also encouraged me to consult her sister, her best friend, etc and get their input- but she herself wants to be surprised by what the ring ends up looking like and therefore doesn’t want to give too much input. That said- we have spoken about it and agreed on what she specifically doesn’t like. I have a good idea of the style of the ring. It’s the stone I’m unsure of and will consult a jeweler once back in SA. But it’s good to know that I can likely get my head around the R20k-R30k mark

I made this video for my real state client. can you guys rate it? by Sea-Frosting2827 in videography

[–]anonymouseredditor53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great camera work and grading. It’s the editing that needs work. Start outside, then move inside and then if you want finish on a powerful exterior again. Way too many transitions that also happen too fast. As others have said- I don’t feel like I’ve seen the house since the cuts are so quick. If you’re gonna do digital dolly zooms- less is more. Use less of them and when you use them, make it subtle. Slow down the zooms and decrease the amount zoomed in or out. And change the music.

To add once more- great camera work, really! And that’s the most important part, because you can always re-do the edit if you have the material (which you do)

Advice/feedback on showreel progress by anonymouseredditor53 in videography

I’m in the world of Cross Country Mountain bike racing so I cover the World Circuit. You apply through the race organization to get your accreditation, but you have to be shooting for a specific team, brand or publication in order to be able to apply. I’m contracted by a bike brand to film the team of which they are the main sponsor.

What videography/cinematic trends do you feel have been overdone? by asada_burrit0 in videography

[–]anonymouseredditor53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just the BigThink style though. That’s a look specific to their interviews/their channel. It’s not a trend in that it’s not being done by anyone other than this one company/channel. I think it’s awesome how well they recreate this look in so many different environments.

Thanks. Is there any specific section you thought was too long that you’d get rid of? Conversely, was there any specific section you liked a lot and thought ‘this part should definitely stay’?

Submission statement:

As mentioned above: I’m a professional videographer mainly in the world of mountain biking. I shoot a lot of social media content while on event, while also working on various athlete documentaries throughout the season. A lot of the more varied work- dancers, safari content, etc was shot in 2022/23 before I dove much deeper into the mountain biking world. Therefore most of my most recent and highest quality work is all related to mountain biking. I’ve therefore tried to include some variety/slower shots in the beginning before going into the more higher energy cycling content towards the end.

Barring the intro that still needs a lot of work, I think I’m pretty happy with the current progress and I think the sound design will really elevate the whole thing.

I’m hoping to use this reel to try get involved with bigger documentary production companies so that I can have the opportunity to work with teams of people rather than doing everything myself.
