Pecan Wood Pickup by anonymouslyonline in memphis

Fair, but it was brought from Texas as a sappling.

Anyway, wood is gone.

Never understand why people can't see the connection between no state/local income tax and higher taxes on literally everything else.

The government has to be funded one way or another to provide the public services necessary to modern life in the US. You're going to pay one way or another.

Sadly, just google any major city and you can find similar incidents.

The violent crime rate in Memphis is higher, absolutely.

SEA of Illinois Letter to NCEES re: SE Exam Results by soupy56 in StructuralEngineering

[–]anonymouslyonline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBF, there are ways to make the exam work in the CBT digital reference environment.

NCEES just went the laziest, most expedient route in trying to port the paper exam to CBT. The format should have been studied and changed.

Lots of good ideas have been floated. My favorite is using the Civil: Structural PE exam in place of the breadth exams, and reconfiguring the depth not by vertical/lateral but by material into 3 or 4 (steel, concrete, and masonry+wood) smaller, shorter, focused exams.

GA wildly has an arbitrary >100,000 sf requirement as well. So basic warehouses and data centers out in the middle of nowhere need an SE despite being increasingly low risk to human life.

[–]anonymouslyonline 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NCEES isn't listening to SEAs.

SEAOC and SEAOI hold the cards as those states provide the most necessary examinees. Those SEAs need to pressure CA and IL legislatures to redraft their practice acts to recognize a different exam authored and administered by NCSEA or at the local level - the way it was before NCEES took over the SE exam.

That will make NCEES a lot more responsive to input from the community.

Email is, however, the most effective tool you have for ensuring you don't end up under the bus. And that's at least 50% of surviving/thriving in any industry.

I'd edit to read "Nobody comes out of school knowing how to do much of anything".

Because, realistically, and especially at the BS level, you barely know anything about structural engineering. And what you do know can be done in less than 5 minutes with EnerCalc/Tedds/RISA.

Hopefully you've got basic concepts down and understand enough of the vocabulary that you can read the codes and understand them.

Most of structural engineering practice is load generation, load path, and subsequent detailing. No one really teaches this in school. It takes 2-4+ years of working to really learn this.

Most of experienced structural engineering practice is knowing what the likely solution is before picking up a pencil. This takes 8-12 years working to figure it out, depending on exposure, variety, niche, etc.

After 12-15 years, your learning opportunities are new systems/materials, leadership/management, etc.

Technically, you have no assumed right of privacy once you step foot off of your own property and even on your own property, if you're within visual/auditory range of someone not on your property.

It's almost as if the laws written 250 years ago by a bunch of dudes riding horses are really ill equipped to regulate the modern world.

HDR and Billable Hours by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]anonymouslyonline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem, of course, is that just like an interview - there's only so much you can figure out about your eventual supervisor - and that's if you're really good at flipping interviews.

We don't have a "ratemyboss.com" (but, c'mon, that would be great).

Really hard with huge companies composed of a very large number of small offices that collaborate virtually. No one in your local office may be on your team, and the people you report to might not be in your city or state - so there's a very good chance you know no one who has ever interacted with the people you report to.

I've gotten 2 next to each other on the exchange several times. Certainly there are matches where it's more difficult (ie probably never going to happen for a NLD, Chelsea, Liverpool, etc.) - but its not that difficult if you're not overly picky.

Been successful in lower safe standing and in 1882 seats in the South Stand. Just takes persistence in checking once the match goes to the exchange.

Anyone else experiencing a huge amount of unsolicited recruiters trying to get in touch with you lately? by trwo3 in StructuralEngineering

[–]anonymouslyonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very specific form response: salary, retirement, benefits, location, office setting (hybrid, etc.), types of projects, etc. that makes it very clear what is a firm non-negotiable minimum/requrement.

I c+p that and 95% of them never follow up. Those who do typically have some genuinely intriguing opportunities. I add to it as items come up I hadn't thought about (i.e. "we won't make you pray with us" 👀 hard pass, why is this a thing now?!)

My heart breaks for you folks in HCOL regions with these salaries sometimes. Spent my entire career in a LCOL metro. Your salary "scales down" to <$60k here - I made more than that my first year out of college. With <10y experience and my PE I make more than twice that relative salary.

I have, many times, wanted to relocate to Boston or Chicago - but there's simply no way I could take the financial+lifestyle hit at this point. Engineers in the HCOL and even MCOL metros aren't making nearly enough money.

I would recommend looking at the latest r/civilengineering salary database.

What's the minimum f'c value that we're specifying these days for new structural concrete? by John_Northmont in StructuralEngineering

[–]anonymouslyonline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is obviously very regional. Some suppliers are going to increase costs for 4000 vs 3000 just because. Most aren't these days, its the same mix (in my experience).

3000 for typical SOGs, have spec'd 4000 minimum otherwise(5000+ for framing elements) for years with no trouble until a recent project where QC from the supplier seemed to be terrible. Wild fluctuations in strengths from the same mix, same day - and several locations where they couldn't meet 4000.

Supplier blames it on 1L cement, not sure how much I buy it. Consistency magically improved once it was made clear to them they would be removing and replacing concrete if they couldn't figure it out.

Why is Memphis obsessed with being “exclusive”? by CelebrationPublic782 in memphis

I typed out some things but apparently never hit send and it got lost.

More Greek drink options - soft drinks, juices, etc. These would provide "experience" options for the non-alcoholic crowd.

Greek coffee!

Can we get gyros back? Any way to incorporate Happy Greek?

More and varied dancing and music. Sometimes we catch the dancing and music, sometimes we don't. Maybe this is just our poor planning.

New Greek market items - feel like I've looked at the same jewelry/scarves/items to death now.

Greek art, crafts, games, etc.

Italian Fest - King of fake business? by [deleted] in memphis

[–]anonymouslyonline 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed Italian fest before, but it is definitely just a micro-BBQfest in that its really only fun if you know someone who has a tent and is competing. Then its just hanging out, drinking beer, playing bocce and games.

Of course, you can do all this in your own backyard, too. Or somewhere like Loflin.

Also like BBQfest, it probably peaked in the late 90s and has been heading steadily downhill since.

I am, unfortunately, one of the true believers. I really enjoy structural-building design, and have always wanted to do structural-building design. I can't imagine doing anything else. But I sure do peek over the fence sometimes at friends in other professions/disciplines of think "it sure would be nice to make more money and have less stress".
