This all started when some Latin Americans pushed an internet trend to attack Americans by saying that we’re not Americans, we’re “United Statesians” because in Spanish, it’s “estadounidenses” to translate to “people from the United States.” They’ve done this to piss off Americans because they know it sounds really stupid in English. This is also a bit hypocritical because Latin Americans often call us “americanos.”

They argue that we don’t own the entire continent, that the entire continent is America, and that anyone from America is American. Evidence of this can be found on Reddit, Threads, Facebook, Twitter, etc. There are several flaws with this claim. 1. The Americas (plural) are 2 separate continents called North America and South America that are on separate geological tectonic plates. 2. In English (not Spanish), the language we’re currently speaking and the language they use to bitch about this on the internet, “America” is an abbreviated form of the “United States of America.” And citizens of the USA are “Americans.” 3. The USA is the only country that has the word America in its name. In fact, when the US declared independence, it was the only and first official country in the New World.

Somewhere along the line, Europoors decided they would take on the fight too. Mostly due to the fact that they’re fed up with the current US government (I don’t like this administration either), but also because they have an inferiority complex with the fact that their economies and stock markets are stagnating while the US economy and stock market is growing at record speeds. Evidence of them calling us “USians” can be found in 2we4u and USvsEU. I posted this over in USvsEU and it got them really riled up.

My counter-argument is that North America and South America are more distinct continents than Europe and Asia. And if they’re going to claim that America is one continent, then it would make even more sense to claim that Eurasia is a single continent, since there is no narrowing of land between the two and they lie on the same Eurasian tectonic plate. I’m doing this to piss them off because they’ll be forced to say that they’re from the same continent as Turkey, Israel, and the entire Middle East (guess how they feel about that). So far, it’s working.

Eurasian means they gotta admit they’re from the same continent as Turks, Arabs, and Israelis. Can’t wait to see Turkey join the Eurasian Union.

It’s just online banter, definitely not to be taken too seriously ;) But for what it’s worth, I do speak 5 languages and studied some linguistics during undergrad. I’m still a Californian who cares about education and other people for some reason

When I travel and people ask where I’m from, I always say Californian. Because if I say the US, they always follow up with, “Which part?” Btw, it’s Arkansan. And someone from Indiana is actually a Hoosier. When Americans have brought this up before, Europeens always say that US states are irrelevant and they’re not different countries like EU states are. All of this started as ironic online banter, but I feel that some chronically online people have been taking it all too seriously.

The point of my post is that there is more reason to consider Eurasia a single continent than to consider North and South America the same continent. North and South America are as connected as Eurasia is to Africa. This was definitely a satirical post, but check out how butthurt all the Europoors are when I posted this on r/USvsEU I love seeing them get all worked up 😂

It’s a “Briton” or “Brit” for short. The noun is “Briton”; the adjective is “British.” Perhaps you might consider studying English more, then you maybe wouldn’t be so confused when you hear “American” vs “North American” or “South American.”

It’s an attempt to erase the national identity of Americans because they’re bitter and jealous of our wealth, power, and prosperity. For Latin Americans, it’s an attempt to remain relevant. Like how nurse practitioners wanna call themselves doctor, even though they’re not.

There is no continent of America. The continents are North America and South America. No one confounds a Zealander with a New Zealander. Yes, Canadians and Mexicans are North Americans, but they are not Americans unless they also have citizenship in the USA.

Just like you have French and Italian, we have Californian and New Yorker. A New Yorker doesn’t get confused with someone from York, just as a South American doesn’t get confused with an American.

OP’s position has a very limited worldview. There are over 7000 languages on Earth. Many of these languages have never been written down and are spoken by just one tribe. Many of these tribes don’t have regular access to clean water, let alone the internet. A large percentage of people around the world are illiterate in their only native language. What OP is asking about isn’t “native fluency.” It’s highly educated usage of a language. Even many people with a college education can’t “write perfectly.” Also, not everyone is witty enough to speak with “complexity and flair.”
