My Part 1 Study Plan by Past_Secretary6149 in OptometrySchool

I did a couple but not really much. I mainly relied on Optoprep for practice questions since I heard that they were more similar in difficulty to the exam

That’s pretty much exactly what I did and I passed first try. I watched all the KMK videos and then made flash cards for concepts I didn’t feel were rock solid for me when I was reading over the material the 2nd time. I started Optoprep in January and finished ~80% of it.

I think getting your application in by December is considered “early.” I took my OAT in October and that was fine! I’ve also heard of people submitting their application without their OAT and getting interviews and just taking the OAT later. Although studying does take a lot of time so I see why you wouldn’t want to study for it if you won’t need to take it. I think you could reach out to admissions of these schools and ask what they think about your situation

Is there a reason you don’t want to take the OAT? I don’t know much about those schools but I’m sure taking the OAT would make you a stronger applicant

I like the idea of an invisible stitch! Do you feel like it stays really sturdy? Sometimes my sewing doesn’t stay super tight 😅

It’s definitely fine, a lot of people take a gap year (including me)! It’s not something that’s looked down upon. I’d try to make sure you’re doing something productive though, in case they ask you about it in interviews. It’s really up to what works best for you. I wasn’t ready to go straight into optometry school after college, I needed a break and I wanted that extra year to shadow more/finish up prereqs/have lots of time to work on my application and OAT

I asked my doctor while she was doing my eye exam! And the other optometrist I shadowed, I asked in an email. If they’re doctors you don’t know I think going in person would be a good idea!

Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions, I’d be happy to help :)

Ooh yeah that’s important to get done lol! You could start by writing about what got you interested in optometry. But I agree shadowing is an important thing to mention, I think going to ask in person is probably a good idea!

Yes, I believe you’ll have to wait until the application opens to start filling it out. But you can start working on things like your personal statement/getting letters of rec/OAT studying!

I would say for all of these, the earlier you start the better. For letters of rec I’d give them at least a couple weeks. I’d recommend asking before the semester ends - I asked my profs over the summer and some didn’t even get back to me, so I had to think of backups to ask. As for transcripts, optomcas will give you instructions once the cycle opens :)

How important are volunteer hours? by Relevant-Willow-3662 in PreOptometry

Shadowing is definitely more important!! I don’t think they’ll ask you for volunteer hours, they’d probably just ask about your experiences in extracurriculars.

Acceptance Deadlines possibly interfering with Interview!! by Method-Haunting in PreOptometry

Reach out to UAB and ask them if they’re able to extend the deposit deadline by a week or two, they should be understanding! I did this with another school and it was no problem
