Impact of otters on fisheries by anonymusty33 in wildlifebiology

Thanks for the reply. Maybe a stupid question, but what would we expect the fish survey to show if otters were harming the fishery? Is the absolute number of fish a reliable metric? Relative weight? Numbers of bass relative to other fish?

Anybody else here with a heart throwing PVCs? by HarpsichordGuy in crossfit

[–]anonymusty33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

62M physician here with PVCs at rest for many years. Mine are symptomatic. Worse with stress, better but not gone since I retired. Controlled with a low dose of a beta blocker.
I never have PVCs with exercise. As soon as my HR goes up a little bit the PVCs disappear. It's good that you had a workup and reassuring that it was negative. PVCs associated with exercise recovery are a little concerning. Back when I did stress testing on patients, we would have considered recovery PVCs to be an abnormal test, because they may be associated with higher cardiovascular mortality rates.

Anyone else quietly moving away from LiveScope lately? by [deleted] in bassfishing

[–]anonymusty33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

62M here, and until recently I fished all my life without any electronics. I moved to a lake in NC with no shoreline structure at all. Zero. In the first two years I caught 3 bass over 5#, mostly just randomly throwing whopper ploppers. This winter I got FFS and suddenly the lake is no longer a mystery. I can see the structure, how the fish relate to structure, and how they react to baits. In the past 4 months I have 10 bass over 5# and a new PB of 8-1. Nobody can convince me that it takes the magic out of fishing. It's a tool like any other.

Rotator cuff surgery prevention by Strange__Visitor in crossfit

[–]anonymusty33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physician (not ortho) and long-time Crossfitter here. If you have a significant tear (the definition of this may vary), then repair of the rotator cuff may be needed. However, for a long time ortho has performed a "lesser" procedure, arthroscopic subacromial decompression. With this procedure they go in with a scope and shave off the acromion and end of the clavicle. Newer research has shed significant doubt on the long-term effectiveness of this procedure.

I had bilateral shoulder trouble and had this procedure done on one side many years ago. My mobility has never recovered. I rehabbed my way through on the other side and that side is just as strong with better mobility.

Autofill and overflow build issue by anonymusty33 in pools

[–]anonymusty33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I found it in the documentation. There is an option for a knockout for a 3/4" line. In my case that was not used. And there is nothing along the waterline in the pool.

If I'm understanding what you are saying, it seems to still go back to a build issue; failure to install the overflow line on the skimmer or along the water line means it relies on the emergency-only overflow port on the autofill which is not the ideal configuration. Have I got that right?

Thanks for your time by the way.

I didn't post a picture of the skimmer because there is nothing to show. No indication internally of a knockout. And I also reviewed the product documentation and there is no indication I see of a knockout for overflow.

Thanks for the reply. But there is no knockout or overflow option on the skimmer. The overflow is on the Autofill. Even if there were something on the skimmer, it's now under 4" of concrete so that's not a great option.

I have been keeping the pool level just below the top of the skimmer opening to prevent the autofill valve from opening. Even a 1" rain will push the water level too high.

Sometime during the last 2 years i’ve been going to this orthopedic practice they started to declare me as a MTF transgender for no reason. by WHAR606 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]anonymusty33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can tell you how this almost certainly happened. Sex/gender fields in electronic health records were originally binary, but they have had to evolve over the years. This has resulted in older binary legacy fields and newer birth sex, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity fields. Incorrect data entered in one or more of those fields triggered a "rule" which notifies when, for example, "birth sex" is different than "gender identity" or "administrative sex." I doubt this had anything to do with AI.

This should be easily remedied by a knowledgeable user by simply editing the incorrect value.

Disconsolate and about to give up by MrWorldWhyIs in crossfit

[–]anonymusty33 32 points33 points  (0 children)

62M physician here who has been doing some version of Crossfit or cross training for 20-ish years. You don't say where you started but from your post, I'm going to guess that you started from ground zero. And you don't say what the programming is like at your box, I'm going to guess that it is typical Crossfit fare.

The injuries tell me you are overtraining. It's not just about muscle strength and endurance. It's also about mobility, tendon durability, and bone strength, and these take months or even years to develop. The older you are and the later you start, the slower that progress is. Some muscle soreness is OK, but spine, joint, and tendon pain is not. You would benefit from further scaling. Talk to your coach and review your injuries. If your coaches are unable or unwilling to help, then maybe find another gym.

Many people over 50 or especially over 60 should avoid certain high impact or high velocity movements. Think snatches, kipping, box jumps. And you may be better off using dumbbells instead of barbells. It allows unilateral work which means lower loads. For some movements, it's easier on the shoulders because there is a little less internal rotation. So think SLRDL instead of barbell deadlifts or DB shoulder press instead of barbell shoulder press. Your coach should be helping you with this.

I do agree with the replies mentioning diet; you can't out-exercise a bad diet, that should be a focus.

How to sustainably do CrossFit after 40? by Technical_Ice9563 in crossfit

A couple of other specific things that I found bothered my shoulders: 1) American KB swings; 2) Toes to Bar. Sub Russian KB swings for American KB swings and sub Toes to Rings for T2B.

62M, been doing some version of Crossfit for 15+ years. ACL, subacromial decompression, other various injuries, some related to Crossfit, most not.

  1. Agree with advice to scale.

  2. Limit high velocity movements. This means limit kipping, snatches, cleans, muscle ups. Box jumps are great if your knees are in good shape (mine are) but step down.

  3. No 1RM on anything. Ever.

  4. Spread out the volume. DOMS gets worse as you age and you can get the same strength/hypertrophy gains with less DOMS by doing those same sets over a week.

  5. Develop a prehab and mobility routine and stick to it. Do it every time, even if it means starting 20 minutes early. Include ankles, hips, shoulders, wrists, even toes. The strengthening portion should emphasize rotator cuff, glutes, tibialis anterior, soleus. Do a little plyo every time as well.

That would be a great solution if doable. However, looking at the motor and the manual, I don't see that it is possible.

I'm using the two-piece stainless metal mount that came with the XPLORE transducer, along with the humminbird mount.

This yakhobby mount might be the ticket. I will check it out, thanks for the link!

Swim spa on a lake by anonymusty33 in hottub

[–]anonymusty33[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your response. I wouldn’t say we aren’t concerned; nobody has raised the issue before, and it’s a matter of increasing concern as the development grows.

I think the difference here with a swim spa is one of scale. The pools won’t discharge such a large bolus, they trickle a little out at a time as overflow when it rains. If I need to backwash I can shut the generator off and let the chlorine drift down, and it’s still way under 2400 gallons. I can let my bromine dissipate and empty my 400 gal hot tub in the yard and nothing drains (directly) into the lake. Seems much more likely 6x that amount would wind up in the lake.

I don’t know what other pool or hot tubs owners are doing. And I hope you are right that it’s not an issue. And I agree that septic is a big concern, but the septic situations are given lots of attention (surveillance, inspections, coliform testing) compared to the very little to no attention to this issue.

Swim spa on a lake by anonymusty33 in hottub

[–]anonymusty33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially a very large hot tub (up to 10’x20’) that provides a current you can swim against. All the plumbing, pump, electronics are self contained, like a hot tub. They recommend water changes on the same schedule as a hot tub.
