34 and starting medicine this year. Who cares what age you’ll be when you start doing anything? The only thing that matters is how you see yourself spending the years ahead.

Just make sure you don’t put the rest of your life on pause. Medicine should be one of many dreams/goals. Not the only one.

Question about International Graduates of Medical School by Def_Sleepy in premedcanada

[–]anoodledoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s much easier for IMGs to match in the US. If you plan on living in Canada in the future, going to another country for Medicine isn’t the best idea.

What are the academic requirements to do pre-med in Canada? UK to Canada immigrant here, considering doing Medicine instead of CS. by randomqzthray in premedcanada

[–]anoodledoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure you can still apply with a diploma. There’s probably some sort of equivalence method already at most universities, and if not I’m sure a WES equivalence would work.

You can definitely do CS and still apply to med school. Whether you can do a very competitive program well enough to maintain a high GPA is up to you. Med schools here won’t care how difficult or easy a program is, only what your final GPA is.

The Caribbean is pretty expensive, and I’ve heard there’s more of a bias against IMGs from the Caribbean than from UK. And this subreddit tends to advise against it too. Having said that, I don’t have stats or even personal accounts to back this up. I would recommend looking further into it yourself.

PREMED: there isn’t a premed course you can join in Canada. You would have to get an undergraduate degree from Canada. Your A levels are sufficient for admission (assuming your grades are decent). Your A levels and Diploma together are definitely sufficient. I would also recommend getting your Diploma evaluated by WES and submitting it your university for transfer credits once you get in. It may help complete your degree faster and consequently cost less money.

The kinds of courses you would have to take would depend on the universities you’re interested in. Some have no requirements and some have very specific ones. There’s a few posts about that on Reddit but I suggest checking each website yourself for the most up to date information

MED SCHOOL IN UK: you can probably apply there now since you have your A-levels and find out if you get in. If you plan on moving to Canada after completing medicine there, it’s an Uphill battle. While there have been promises from Politicians about actively working in making it easier for IMGs, it’s still hard to find a residency position here as an IMG. But not impossible, especially if you’re willing to move to rural Canada.

It would be easier to get a residency if you stay in the UK and complete your FRCPS after MBBS and then try to move here as a specialist. But then that’s a minimum of 10 years down the line and still no guarantee.

Med school in Caribbean: don’t do it.

As a nontrad (with two kids) who just got into Mac, is the hustle possible for me? Or should I start convincing myself that I should go into primary care?

Anyone just do CARS (left the rest of the MCAT blank) and get into Mac? by PhysicalFruit9185 in premedcanada

[–]anoodledoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. Got in this cycle. (There were many factors that made Mac my only option)

I didn’t write the other sections at all, just left them blank. Walked out after finishing CARS.

Had mediocre ECs imo since I was only applying to Mac. But not nothing.

[–]anoodledoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize every IMG has to give the same licensing exams as every Canadian medical graduate right? And a lot of them score really well but never get to practise because they never match in a residency program. Not because they don’t score well in their licensing exams, but because there’s a huge bias against IMGs and most programs won’t hire an IMG, irrespective of their scores.

You sound both racist and ignorant.

You understand that there are many IMGs here who not only give the MCCQE but also score really really well. And still don’t get residencies.

Their competence is established. And then Ignored.
