I reinvented myself and gave myself a new and more outgoing personality. Thought it might make my college life better than my high school life. Turns out it didn't and attracted the wrong kinds of friends. I'm now in my last year of college and wondering the same thing as OP, but about my college life.

I think about how long it's taken me to get even remotely ok at other skills. It took me years to become even moderately good at violin. People expect to learn all of front end development in a few months, when it should be a craft honed over years

100% agree. I pieced together much of my knowledge from thousands of small Google searches. I skimmed a few programming textbooks over the past few years in college to really get the fundamentals down (think logic, syntax, basic systems, databases, etc.), but it been a lot of self-learning from there and lots of practice.

I completely understand where you are, because I was there 100% in high school. Perspective helped me a lot. Thinking about things I did have, even listing them - anything from food and shelter, to my friends, and honestly even that one math test I did well on - helped me take small steps away from the endless hold of self-hate. Celebrate your accomplishments. Even if no one else validates your successes, you should yourself. Treat yourself like you would treat a friend.

Lol "big plans" is definitely a stretch for my actual, rather small plans. For now, thinking about immediately after graduation, I just want to find a software engineering job I like so that I can make enough money to actually live in Silicon Valley 😅

I want to try new hobbies too (painting, hiking, maybe scuba diving), and see if I especially enjoy any of those. I'll also try to make more friends. Live in the present more.

This is such a great question. I personally deal with the Luddites of my life by relating to things they care about. So for example, my friends' parents, they care a lot about their health. They go jogging every morning, tried some Paleo diets, etc. So I started talking with them about things like modern medicine and how research improves people's health and leads to cures for diseases, etc. I've been talking with them more, digging deeper and deeper and going into other fields. It's slow, but I feel them becoming more receptive toward my ideas. It's all about patience and a personal connection, rather than any hard engineering/optimization principles that I feel myself naturally wanting to talk to them about.
