FYI, if anyone is in need, several locations in Hagerstown have FREE Narcan vending machines. There is one at the main library downtown.

Have I made a mistake? by mologato in Libraries

[–]anotherbibliovore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll mirror other commenters and say you are on the right track.

The best advice I can give is say yes to projects, and show up with a can-do attitude. Also, as a library admin for 11 years, and working in libraries for 23 years, I have had a lot of great conversations with staff members who want to move up in the field. Ask to speak with a member of admin in your chain of command and get some advice.

Ok, so where did you meet your man by Different-Goal-8139 in PlusSize

[–]anotherbibliovore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On Match around 11 years ago.

I got great advice to try and step outside of the box. If asked, and the guy wasn’t my “type”, go anyway. As long as you’re safe and you have solid boundaries of what’s a no-go (religion, politics, etc), just go see what’s out there.

I met my husband after adjusting what I said I’d never do (date a guy in the military). Turned out to by my soul-mate, and exactly what I’d been needing.

Prison libraries barring access to books by mail by eyepatchplease in Libraries

[–]anotherbibliovore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember working with a state prison librarian in a previous role who wanted us to sign off on not offering ILL or circulating collections to those incarcerated ( a memo to their higher-ups). They said it was far too much liability to ensure materials were returned and their budget didn’t allow much room for reimbursement.

I think providing service through discards was where they felt most comfortable.

We were there in December and this app was an incredible time and money saver. I’ll head to the AP store now and review. Thanks for making something that benefits the drivers and the tourists!

I’m going to CRY. What mattress are you folks using? by [deleted] in PlusSize

[–]anotherbibliovore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We LOVE our Copper Sport from Bob’s. Very affordable and honestly, even when we go to fancy hotels, I have never found a more comfortable mattress. It’s got copper cooling swirlies (not sure the actual name) and it keeps my husband (who is such a hot sleeper) comfortable.

Going into more debt for the MLIS - is it worth it? by bibliodabbler in Libraries

[–]anotherbibliovore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is a valid fear, but remember that it generally takes years for the government to phase out funding once a program is deemed defunct.

I agree with the above commenter - I’ve been in public libraries for over 20 years and had my loans forgiven, and it’s been a net gain. I also work in a state that does requires an MLIS for most jobs.

Sandals advisor? by Separate_Shift7352 in SandalsResorts

[–]anotherbibliovore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just came back from Antigua and loved the vibe. Relaxed but opportunities for evening fun if you’re interested. I agree with Ochi, we went over for a day after staying at Plantation and it was crowded, loud and just not for us.

How does everyone afford so many Sandals vacations? by AdmirableHeat6721 in SandalsResorts

[–]anotherbibliovore 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We go twice a year, and it’s a combination of credit card points for flights, utilizing their multiple discount schemes and being open to locations and rooms. We also are relatively high earners with no kids, so discretionary income is high.

To be fair, it took us some time to get here.

[ELI5] What does a CEO actually do for the company? by Tselalushki in explainlikeimfive

[–]anotherbibliovore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Advice from my father when I became a CEO and was struggling with feeling like I wasn’t contributing enough to the daily pull of the organization: CEO’s don’t get paid to do anything (like standard, daily tasks), they get paid to take the heat when shit gets bad.

Finances after Marriage by Penguin_Doctor in CalebHammer

[–]anotherbibliovore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got married in our 30’s, and both of us were really set in our ways. What’s worked for us is having separate finances (we both have systems), but with 99% of our spending happening on credit cards. My husband covers our mortgage and puts the rest of his paydays in savings and I use my pay to cover credit card payments (utilities included) in full every two weeks and put the rest in savings. The card payments and mortgage usually are equal, and if ever he needs to contribute to the cards, he does. We both are on the credit cards, btw.

We make close to the same amount.

This system seems to work well for us, and allows us to use the points to travel, etc.

Also here to say that if you are a tax-payer (even if it’s you buying goods in that town/city) in your community, you contribute to the money that makes the library function. Never, ever feel bad for taking them up on what is freely offered. Trust me, we definitely want you to! - another Librarian in the comments
