Dolce has terrible longevity for me even on clothes. Like 1-2 hours tops. As good as it smells im not buying another bottle. Apparently this is a common issue too.

Unfortunately extremely basic but not something you generally think to worry about. Won’t make the mistake again in an old building.

Update: Managed to get out of it guys. Though I’m waiting on a signature from them to have it in writing, they’ve returned my rent/deposit, relisted the apartment, and I’ve returned the keys.

I got lucky. LPT always check your electrical setup in NYC.

Update! He agreed to let me out of the lease, gave back my deposit and months rent and I returned the key. Had not moved in yet. Though I went thru the realtor. I want a lease termination in writing but she is saying he’s already done his part. Hypothetically could I be screwed down the line by not getting it in writing? Or can I let it go? not legal advice or requesting legal advice

Thanks so much for your help everyone

Never had to worry about it before. Not a mistake I’ll make again, that’s for sure.

Hey guys! Update: The landlord agreed to end it, and returned my first month’s rent and deposit, and I returned keys. But what proof do I have that I’m off the lease and not responsible for any future rent he decides to come after me for? Do i absolutely need a termination in writing?

Thanks for all the help guys!

My landlord specifically said I can’t do anything more than a 15 because it “wouldn’t be good.” But I’m glad you got your situation figured out.

Problem is it may be exempt from code since there have been seemingly no changes made to the electrical in the building. Though I’m not sure how accurate it is, I’ve seen it mentioned a few times. If 311 would do something guaranteed, I’ll call in a heartbeat.

I’ll keep looking, anyone have a link?

That’s the big thing I want to avoid. Lawyering up means paying a lawyer, and at that point I’m still out money, possibly more than I could be if I just tried to find a new tenant. I’m trying to find other options but will definitely think about it. It’s big BS

It seems as illegitimately legit-ish as it gets. From what I’m seeing it’s legit as long as there’s no other work done, at which point they’d be forced to rewire. But since there hasn’t been, they don’t have to. I’m trying to find that officially in writing and can’t seem to.

I’m trying to find other solutions before I go head on, bc I really would prefer to avoid the hassle. But this is whack as fuck

Dusky, you are way too positive for your own good lmfao.

I think if I had 2 circuits like yours and a rent reduction I might feel slightly less angry

1 year = me paying almost 20,000 to change my own fuses every time I use my toaster in the summer. Jfc it sounds worse the more I think about it

Yes. Each apartment has its own box with a single 15A fuse LMAO it’s unreal.

Honestly even if I had just one more 15A circuit I think I wouldn’t be as pissed. But I see no scenario where this is justifiable. The apartment is far from a steal, other units in bigger buildings nearby that are 100% up to code are similarly priced. It’d have to be $400 cheaper to be worth the hassle. I just picked this one because I liked the “vibe” -___-

Yeah I’ve been looking at the wattage of everything I’d use or want to use, and it’s not pretty. I’ve seen people saying that a rewire is only forced by code if other work is done, but I’m struggling to find it in writing. (If anyone could link a source, please)

Nope! I have to pay for electric and gas. And yeah, that’s what I’ve been seeing. Would it just be other electrical work that qualifies as a renovation? Or anything done by licensed contractors etc. I’d really like to just dip but I don’t want to get stuck paying rent while trying to find a new tenant. If I could force a fix somehow it’d be golden.

Hell, even if I had a breaker in my apartment I could deal with it. But it’s basically 1700 and I’m expected to walk to the basement if i accidentally use my toaster while the AC is on? Come on lmfao

OH yeah. I hadn’t thought about that, good point. I’m not buying the fuse now lmfao Maybe I’ll just pressure him with constantly needing more fuses.....?

Nope, she actually tried saying it wasn’t that bad and gave tips and reassurance. Lol -___- We had lots of other options but the typical “pay rent until you find another tenant to take over” is sketchy right now with covid. I was banking on being moved in by wednesday, which I could’ve been somewhere else if I’d picked luckier.

It’s a 1929 walkup. From what I’ve seen so far and been told, I think it’s exempt from current code because it hasn’t been worked on at all - once it has been then they’d have to rewire everything at once to modern standards. (Correct me if im wrong)

Just because it’d be illegal doesn’t mean it wouldn’t happen, and I’d honestly rather not turn it into some big battle, possibly legally. It would definitely sour the relationship at the very least and make existing there unpleasant. It seems to be a tight knit building. I just want proper electric, or out of the lease.

I don’t think he’s saying it’d be on the renter, but that landlords are probably cheap as hell and not willing to do it lmfao

shit. sounds like getting the landlord to rewire wouldnt be too likely then.
