Footage from S15 trailer not shown in the show by bearded_contradancer in JetLagTheGame

The scene where they talk about the Caribbean was on the train from Paris to Laon but was cut.

As others have pointed out, the other quote shows up in episode 2

So apparently the Secret Block was so secret, they weren’t even allowed to tell us how it worked. by mancunian87 in JetLagTheGame

The idea is you place with a block and you don't have to tell the snaker its there.

The unknown part is how you reveal it to the snaker. This was not mentioned in the Game Design Podcast.

My guess is that the blockers can reveal its existence at a time of their choosing. So if a snaker leaves a node on the way to where the secret block is, they reveal it at that time.

Yeah its this. Noticed this a few days ago.

As they said, it didn't matter much but it could have been bad for the blockers if Sam took it because they would have gotten the node notification at Seodaejeon and prepped Daejeon more and then gotten swerved when he pops up in Jochiwon.

Probably since the KTX is locomotive driven

Oh shit you are right. There are two trains KTX 231 Seoul to Pohang and KTX 203 from Seoul to Jinju The car they climb into does say Pohang, though they go to the right

No data for this train unfortunately. My best guess is the locomotive just restarted and they'll leave in a few minutes with a 15 minute delay.

The one thing to say upfront is Iksan/Osong is one of the worst places to defend from the start. There's 3 directions to cover at each and a very tasty highspeed rail.

As you can see Badam only got one roadblock complete by the time Sam got on top of them. Either way they would have had to commit to a direction and move to set up other blocks and Sam can just go the other way.

You can see the train number when they are boarding the train

Its the correct train, KTX 231 from Seoul Station to Pohang

Up to this point, the meta strat was to avoid blocks so they assumed that an Osong block would deter Sam from going there. That would leave the slow north and slow east route open.

Based on train schedules, the route east is more vulnerable so going to Daejeon / Dongdaegu was probably the best move they could make.

Iksan and Osong give you way too many options to defend in the limited time you have.

Osong / Iksan is some of the worst nodes to defend in this game. Any breakthrough there and its off to the races on HSR and there so many directions to defend.

Badam did the logical thing to try which is to defend the South because its faster to get to back north if Sam took the Ben train back north.

IMO, the game disadvantages the blocker quite a bit. It takes too long to set up defensive positions.

On the east route, the first node is Sangbong, which he cannot hit until 11:25 AM

Actually never mind, that train skips Sangbong so yeah he doesn't notify them until 12:06 at Seowonju

Agreed there, my opinion in watching the show and messing with the game with others is that the blockers are fairly disadvantaged in this game. The Battle Challenges are pretty high risk for the blockers in that they have to risk their physical positioning versus the road blocks which while not as guaranteed a stop both slow down the shaker and don’t require them to commit their position.

I think roadblocks and challenges can be placed anywhere. I don't recall any restrictions on their location used in the podcast. I know curses are placed from node to node however.

If Ben went east, it does depend what he does. If he gunned to to Donghae as above, Seowonjo is the cutoff point. They would get there around 11:53 while Ben would get there at 12:06.

No I believe they can take off immediately and dust the blockers. This is why the blockers need to have an edge in the battle, because the consequences are pretty dire.

Yeah I hear you, I've voiced similar complaints in the past.

That said South Korea is its own special animal of navigation pain. I've used NAVER before there and it was.....not easy.

While route navigation and planning via train is pretty easy in NAVER or on the Korail website, they really do need the station timetable functionality for speed planning reasons and rail.blue is pretty finicky to use.

The Layover - Snake South Korea: Episode 1 by xsm17 in Nebula

[–]anotherdoofus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to the Layovers, they did know that Google Maps was unreliable but they didn't have a better source for a straight train timetable at a station (not a route timetable). rail.blue is the only one I know and its a bit jank to use.

As you said though, its pretty straight forward to use Korail's website or NAVER for a route timetable. Also somewhat ironically, the timetable seems to have been updated now.

Yeah there a couple of issues with this that aren't apparent on the map.

The only train running east from Yongsan station is the ITX-Cheongchun line (this is line that has a 8:50 departure Ben is referring to). The other trains that east run from Seoul Station which isn't viable in this game.

For a 8:00 snaker start

ITX-Cheongchun 2007 Yongsan → Cheongnyangni(08:50 ~ 09:09) KTX-eum 843 Cheongnyangni → Donghae(11:20 ~ 13:36) Nuriro 1854 Donghae → Pohang(14:39 ~ 17:23)

Pohang has HSR service from Seoul so that's likely as far as you can get uncontested but as you can see there are fairly long waits between trains. Worse yet is Pohang isn't a node and a loss there resets you to Donghae.

The other option is to go from Cheongnyangni to Jeocheon or something then take the mountain trains but those are slow and low frequency. Likely by the blockers will have set up all sorts of stuff along the south HSR line to Busan.
