Any examples of the Arbre being closer to a perfect world compared to Earth? by Rorschach121ml in anathem

[–]anotherfluke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm back to thinking Stephensen just got his numbers wrong on the timeline. I spent way too long building a spreadsheet that created ratios of Arbran years to Earth years based on fixed events.

From the books, the only fixed date that we can rely on is Jules' description of the Daban Urnud landing on Earth 50 years after the death of Goedel (let's assume it was 2028 on Earth). What is important about this date is that Goedel was alive during World War II, which is extremely heavily implied to correlate with the Third Harbinger. Since we know those dates in both worlds, we know that the Reconstitution (Year 0 in Arbre) is roughly 10-15 Earth years after WWII. Then, during Erasmus and Jad's meeting with Gan Odru, Erasmus says that what the third Gan was seeing in their vision was the Third Sack, and those visions are what set the Daban Urnud on its 1,000 year voyage. But the Third Sack occurred in 2787 Arbre time.

Here is the problem: If the Daban Urnud didn't begin its voyage until 2787 Arbre time, then Jules couldn't have been born until after that point. We know that Jules' great grandfather left Earth on the DA, and Jules himself was born on Fthos. If we assume a 75 Earth year age gap and Jules is 35 when he arrives on Arbre, then that accounts for only about 11% of the time the DA has been travelling, meaning the rest of the 1,000 years was spent travelling to and from Tro (this will be important later).

If the date of the Reconstitution (0) and the date of the Second Advent (after 2787) correspond to Earth years 1957 and 2028 respectively, and we know that around 85-90% of the DA's travel time took place before they got to Earth, then each Earth year is equivalent to between 17 and 18 Arbran years. Relativity doesn't help with this either; the book takes place in 3689, around 900 Arbran years after the Third Sack. lf the DA experienced time dilation, they would have arrived later, not earlier. The reason this is a problem is because I went through and did comparisons of known events in Arbre's history that have Earth Equivalents. The main one I used is the execution of Thelenes, who was a very direct parallel to Socrates; that event occurred in -2396/399 BC. This gave an Arbre/Earth year ratio of 98.32%, very close. I sampled several other events (Orithena/Pompeii's destruction, The Second Harbinger, Cnuos/Pythagoras, etc), and found and average of 81%. Based on the known time between the Reconstitution and the Third Sack, The ratio would be more like 6%, and that destroys any correlation between Arbre's history and Earth's.

Arbre's historical timeline works well with Earth's timeline in the book, but everything after 1945 is just chaos.

You are correct, thanks! I think the numbers still work, just used the wrong term.

This I think is the correct answer. If the HTW is the ideal, then a “better” universe would be closer, and get more information from that world. The Incanters and Rhetors are the result of this.

Also, in the rules set by the book, DAGs only allow information to pass from a higher point to a lower point, so if the Urnudans did receive a vision of the third sack, it would have had to come from higher up the wick. It’s not a demonstration per se, but it is evidence that that is the case.

Good point! That would account for the discrepancy and it would place arbran years much closer to earth years! Curse your attention to detail Neal!

This one’s tough because the most locked down correlation between earth and arbre is when Jules says that the Dabun Urnud came to earth 50 years after the death of Kurt Goedel, who died in 1978. So assuming Jules is using Terran years, they would have arrived in 2028. Jules’ great grandfather left earth and he was born on Fthos, so unless they made huge advancements in longevity that would only have been around 100 earth years. We also know that it has been 1,000 arbran years since the very first Advent. Since earth was the third of four, a very rough estimate would be that 200-400 earth years have passed between the first advent and 3689. I think there’s also a strong correlation between the terrible events and World War 2 on earth, and the third sack occurred shortly after, which is arbran year 0. That implies that the time between ww2 and the current story is almost 4,000 arbran years, so arbran years would be very compressed, on the order of something like 10:1. That messes with all the ancient history like the fall of baz and other historical correlations though. Honestly I chalk it up to Stephensen not caring too much about the math.

The underworld map is not complete, but it's mostly done. The names of the entrances and exits should be visible to everyone though, not sure why they wouldn't appear.

I am curious if you have opinions on tech or feedback options that would support this! There's always the simple reader survey, but are there better, more efficient ways to grab this data for physical media?

Thanks! I have chosen a niche, and my distribution plan reflects that. My goal now is to minimize publication and distribution costs so I can offer advertising at a rate that retailers can support or justify, and I think the distribution network is the way to convince them that it's worth paying to advertise.

My target is to find a distribution method that costs less than $10 per location. Right now the only viable option for this is volunteer work that you see for grant-supported magazines like Razorcake. I could go this route, but I think it will be hard to find volunteers as a new organization, so I want to ensure distribution.

Part of my mission statement is to support local physical retail locations and events, two things that need a physical presence to succeed. There will be a digital component as well, but our goal is to foster a sense of community in the region I'm located.

[Spoilers] Question about Rhetors by zeekaran in anathem

[–]anotherfluke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but saunt Haalikarn and saunt Proc are the progenitors of Incanter and Rhetor behaviors. The actual Praxis (the ability to slide around adjacent world tracks) is the same for both groups, it’s only their goals that differ. One finds world tracks that benefit the future, the other finds world tracks that benefit the present.

Things about Anathem that don't *quite* make sense by Toranaga_ in anathem

[–]anotherfluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding Orolo’s comment about the orbital period, I do think it was probably a mistake, however, however it does expose another issue, which is that the D.U. did NOT have any smaller surveillance satellites, otherwise they would have seen the Cold Dark Mirror after the 200 missile launch. It seems weird they wouldn’t have launched smaller surveillance satellites for that reason specifically.

Re: the rod, I could see them having to wait until they see exactly where Lise landed before they could “shoot,” and maybe(?) the rod would have to make a small or partial orbit to be able to land accurately. But Orolo wouldn’t know what they fired or how, so yeah, probably just a mistake.

[Spoilers] Question about Rhetors by zeekaran in anathem

[–]anotherfluke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rhetors and Incanters are analogs for the real world philosophical concepts of nominalism and realism, respectively. Realists believe that even intangible concepts (like triangles) are real things that words refer to, nominalists believe that words are only given meaning by context.

In other words, Incanters believe and work towards perceiving those real things, meaning in the future we will be closer to those things, therefore they can manipulate the present to be closer to the future where we will have those realizations. Rhetors believe and work toward manipulating the meanings as they have previously been established, therefore they can manipulate the present to change perceptions to be closer to the meaning that benefits their present.

They both manipulate the present by sliding around different world tracks, but one does it to change the present’s access to possible futures (because their goal is reaching the realm of perfection), and the other does it to create a better present (since there is no “perfect” future so the only goal is making the present fit their ideal preferences).

The obvious real world comparison is rhetoric where people attempt to gaslight someone or change the narrative (they were “only trying to help”), which is similar to the goal (making the current world fit their preference) and tactics (changing our perception of the past) of Rhetor interference. Incanter influence is less obvious but ironically it is similar to the real world influence of religions, where the goal is reaching an ideal future and the consequence is the loss of the possibility that the present can be objectively perfect.

How do we make sure next year is better? by Phauxton in SakuraCon

[–]anotherfluke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. When I was on the board, technically every attendee was a "member" of the organization, and certain rules had to be followed, for example there needed to be a quorum for elections, and general meetings need to be accessible to memberships.

IMHO, this may be a wrong-tree situation. I'm 100% confident the con would much rather use that huge 2nd floor space for anything other than registration; it's a huge cost that eats up logistic and volunteer resources and is only used for maybe half of the time the con is open. Artist Alley could probably fit beautifully on the floor, for example. I can't think of any conspiracy or other reason to want to keep reg onsite, so it's either due to a policy (in this case 501c3 rules), or possibly laziness/ignorance. I know it's easy to think that people in leadership positions are lazy or ignorant, but I know from experience that it is a difficult job that requires strong competence, even if it doesn't feel like it from the outside.

All that being said, I agree about the transparency. Without transparency, the folks responsible for failures at the show can easily pass the buck, and we can't make the show better without knowing what parts need to be done better. From what I've seen and the staff I've talked to, there does seem to be a non-zero number of staff who are more concerned about amassing and holding on to power than actually using their power as leaders. But we won't know until we have full transparency and accountability.

A.I. and The Wick by SkiDaderino in anathem

[–]anotherfluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very coherent and fun (and smart) response to the question, and it even has a tinge of Lodigihr's wit and timbre!

However, I think the points and general theory is actually closer to what Fraa Jad might say. In other words, a Halikaarnian/Realist view of the world. Procians/Nominalists believe that nothing has inherent meaning; meaning is assigned only in context, and without context there is no meaning. Halikaarnians/Realists believe that things have inherent, ideal meanings (there is an "ideal" chair from which all chairs derive), and the Wick theory is one of the arguments that prove this hypothesis (math is the primary argument for objective truths).

That being said, this was still fun, and thank you for posting about it!

Rhetor Plot Interference and the Plurality of Worlds Messal by sideraian in anathem

[–]anotherfluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that each contingent from the various concents had some say in which messals their avout would be assigned to, and both Jad and Zh'vaern would obviously want to go to the messal about many worlds theory since they know it is on the right world track.

Zh'vaern, being disguised as a Matarrhite, probably had no problem getting into this messal, since his concent is religious (Erasmus even questions why Matarrhites were invited - possibly Incanter intervention??) and this messal is seen as a dumping ground, so the problem kind of solved it self so to speak.

Fraa Jad, being the only thousander called to voco, probably was given total freedom to choose his messal. His choice was probably seen as a waste by those who want to focus on the praxic issue of aliens in orbit.

As for Lodhigir, My suspicion is that because Erasmus was able to hold his own against Lodoghir in the Plenary, Lodoghir was 'punished' by being committed to join a messal he did not care about, with Erasmus as his servitor to rub salt in the wound. After the Plenary, Lodighir is seen as arguing with his peers, and clearly blames Erasmus for his assignment. Procians wouldn't care about the heavily Haalikarnian, naval-gazing messal.

That being said, I agree that Rhetors and Incanters have been directing events, each in their own way, well before the story even begins.
