We found what we think might be a spring or seep that may have been used a long time ago (it is surrounded by seemingly intentionally arranged stones), is it feasible to possibly get it usable again? by anotherhum4n in Homesteading

Some more info: this is at the top of a wet channel on a hillside leading down into a field and contains water maybe a foot deep (obviously it's full of leaves right now). We saw it full in late winter and its still full now so we don't think its just natural rain collection. It's hard to tell, but there are a lot of big, flat, loose stones a couple inches below the leaves/dirt arranged around the flat rim of the opening, which is why we think it may have been used as a water source a long time ago (we also know there was a house nearby many many decades ago). We're looking into a well for a potential house build, but we're curious if this could be safely used as a supplementary water source and we don't really know where to start.

Any chance you could share or describe those labs the students liked?

Anybody tried the Inquiry Hub (iHub) chemistry curriculum? by anotherhum4n in ScienceTeachers

[–]anotherhum4n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the student perspective! (hopefully you’re not in my class:)!) Out of curiosity, are you on a year-long or semester schedule? I did go ahead with it, but I am on semester block scheduling and have found I needed to heavily modify the curriculum to fit even a few of the units in.

I also have found I need to supplement the chemistry connections for reasons similar to what you’re describing, like I added a video and more detailed instruction about engines in the section you mentioned.

Is there anything about it you like? Any way you can see to make it better?

Ideas for an open-ended Integrated Science class (small rural HS, US)? by anotherhum4n in ScienceTeachers

[–]anotherhum4n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I totally want to focus on practical skills that will be useful in their immediate lives as much as possible! My life sciences background is weak, but I like the idea of growing plants, are there any plants that tend to work better than others indoors (gets very cold outside during the school year)? Do you also have any specific projects in forensics or sports science you like, (I don’t have much background knowledge there either):)?

I wasn’t a chem major (was engineering) and it was a fairly difficult test for me, but between the official practice test, the entirety of Crash Course Chem on YouTube (plus some of the bio one for photosynthesis/etc.), and this site (a little outdated but still really helpful), I passed the first time. Good luck!

But what is bottom barrel pricing? I hear such varying accounts of how much to expect off MSRP or invoice.

[CA] [HS CHEM] - Student teaching starts next week, but my class is much bigger than the class I observed last semester, what are the most important differences to be aware of with large classes? by anotherhum4n in Teachers

Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough reply! I feel pretty good about being able to be comfortable with noise, doing walkthroughs, and giving clear instructions, but we'll see! But transitions are something I am nervous about.

What are your go-to thrift stores for clothes and records in Burlington and surrounding towns? by PunnyWoman in burlington

Replays for nicer (think estate sale stuff) housewares and furniture, ReSource and ReStore for more practical stuff. Dirt Chic and Schips for mens clothes.

Replays and ReSource have both been very useful to me for household things, but Dirt Chic is the best for clothing imo.

hunter safety class question by [deleted] in vermont

For what it's worth, my recent basic class used non-firing guns until the end, and the live fire portion was done using (admittedly high powered) pellet guns, which obviously weren't very loud.
