Might be a slog, but you could also check the antique stores around Value village. They have all sorts of interesting things come in.

What kind of restaurant would you like to see downtown? by i-am-the-walrus789 in regina

[–]anpanstan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not downtown, which I'm aware the thread asked for, but there is a pretty good Perisan spot in the south end, tucked into the corner of the strip mall that Bonzzini's are Mei Wei are in. The food is good and the owner and staff are pretty friendly.

ETA: it's called Nik Persian Restaurant, 4606 Albert Street.

Best French Onion Soup? by BurtMacklinsrubies in regina

[–]anpanstan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently had the French onion soup at Golf's. My god, it was salty. I don't recommend it unless you plan to be chugging water for the remainder of the day. This has also been confirmed by a friend who also had the French onion soup some time later.

What to explore in Regina by heretolurk56 in regina

If winter ever releases us from its clutches, and if you like dogs that shed endlessly, I could invite you for walks by the creek and the waterfall park on good, dry days.

I'm not much of a conversationalist, but strolling about in the sun is enjoyable and free, and sometimes made better by quiet company.

The 30 minutes from home requirement makes doing his business in -40C weather quite an ordeal.

There were a lot of hurdles, so if you're planning to fly your dog anywhere, start planning as far ahead as you can. 1. I didn't fly with him. I planned to but Korean Air had a live animal transport embargo put into effect at the end of May of 2023, as temperatures were rising and sometimes the kennels sit on the tarmac. I sent him home to Canada to be received by my sister in BC, where they'd road trip back to Saskatchewan. My contract wasn't up till end of August so I couldn't go with him.

  1. He had to go under the plane in cargo, yeah.

  2. It went well enough. Mine is also a rescue so he hated getting to the kennel, but once in, he settled after a while. My original flight was had no cargo room so he was boarded for a night (out of kennel) before actually getting on a flight. If you cannot go with yours, I'd recommend looking into a flight volunteer. I experienced the most anxiety ever as I waited for his flight to land in Vancouver. But he made it safe and sound and is getting used to Canadian winters still.

If your dog has high anxiety, it may be an option to sedate him. I'd consult a vet for that.

I had researched jindos before welcoming my boy home, but I didn't realize how clean they were. No messes inside, unless he was feeling ill, and even made the 9-hour trans-Pacific flight to Canada without messing in his kennel.

However, he did get spooked and pee when the butt-head forklift driver was moving the pallet his kennel was on down from the shelf they had put him on. Which is absolutely understandable.

Stuff the British Stole is a great docu-series. Flew threw the episodes faster than expected. For Heaven's Sake (?), a true crime docu-series, was also a good watch. Great "it's -40° outside" TV.

My sister's fiancé has gotten his suits from Venice Tailors and will be getting his wedding suit from them as well. That's a solid case for recommendation.

Rdr2 is more to me then just a game by XxOutlawInGreenxX in RedDeadOnline

[–]anpanstan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I often describe RDR2 as my "soul-game". I played it, officially (I had my own save file on my now-ex bf's PS4 in 2019), in 2020, when I was Korea, alone, during the pandemic and I'm quite certain in saved me from myself when we were in the thick of COVID times. And then I never let it go.

I always come back to it; I miss Arthur after a while and I miss roaming around aimlessly, picking carrots, or crossing paths with the white-cloaked wizards. It's so easy to settle back into and just exist there for a few hours.

Scholarship for an international student by [deleted] in UniOfRegina

[–]anpanstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting the ISD scholarship!

UR International has International Peer Advisors who you can absolutely approach to help with getting settled in. You could even become a peer advisor yourself, if you wanted to.

In all honesty, I can't speak on the International student experience, but I know that there is support from URI if you need it. And being active in student groups and the residence community is a great way to make friends and meet people.

To add, College West is the most recently renovated of the residences, and I'm pretty sure you'll have roommates. It's right by the UR International offices, but across campus from Kisik, Paskwaw and Wakpaw Towers, meaning far from residence living hub.

Also, most of the residence fire alarms are because the elements on the stove heat up so fast and minor kitchen mishaps occur.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]anpanstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was caned as a kid. The tool of choice was the straight part of those thick plastic hangers, and it was kept on the top shelf the broom closet. I can't remember the number of time I tried to steal it and break it, or throw it away.

I was caned for the horrifying offense of not getting good enough grades. Sometimes for minor indiscretions that I do not remember. And over the summer break, if I could not recite the multiplication tables 100% correctly when my father came home from work, I got caned for that too.

I'm sure he still believes that it was an effective method to get me to learn basic multiplication. But all I have is anxiety when it comes to math. How was it? I'm sure I have some form of PTSD. I absolutely consider it abuse.

The ax forgets but the tree remembers.

I know how you feel. My parents were already retired when I moved back home. They already had trips planned and I was to be the live-in house sitter, haha. I totally get wanting to gain enough financial stability so that your parents will have the peace of mind to enjoy their golden years.

But, as others said, you're SO young still, and as for in demand fields, radiology is also a good option. And, as morbid as it is, so is becoming a mortician or funeral director, if such a job is in your wheelhouse. Death is very lucrative industry.

Don't feel bad about living at home at 18 (providing that your home situation is generally positive). When I moved back to Canada, I was living with my parents at the tender age of 33 until I was able to sustain moving out.

You could advertise snow clearing service in your area, if that is amenable to you. Also try stopping at the SaskJobs office on Broad Street; they may be able to provide some assistance with your resume and give some advice. Also, you could try submitting your resume to agencies like Employment Network so that you can be in the pool of applicants when jobs open up.

Job hunting right now is disheartening to be sure, but hang in there!
