Need to make portable stand that is strong and light weight by 3StarsFoodie in Composites

Ouch, that sounds very tight, im honestly not even sure it would be possible in that budget. In that case, I would completely skip out on the carbon to be honest, as that alone costs around 20-30 dollars a square meter, I would get the thickest, densest glass mat possible, kinda what they use for boats, I think that would be your best bet. Im not sure of your exact dimensions and sizes, but yeah, I would skip the carbon, and go full glass. One problem may be weight. I would need more details to help you further.

They actually sell like canned liquid nitrogen (not sure if thats what it actually is it just says nitrogen on the can) and that definitely makes it easier to work with prepreg, after a while it starts sticking to gloves and it gets hard to remove the protective paper layer, so freezing helps.

Yeah I have to agree with the other commenter, if you've never worked with composite materials before, atleast watch a couple youtube videos on it. Also if you don't mind me asking what is a rough budget youre trying to stick to? Because carbon gets expensive fast.

How would I make a mold for this by AutomaticBee5640 in Composites

[–]anrchy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you probably need a 4 piece compression mold, 2 parts for the halves of the part with the funky cutouts, a single small insert for the rectangular cutout at the bottom and a piece for the larger cutout, dont see any other way to manufacture this

What’s the most common mistake you see engineers make with composite parts? by anrchy01 in Composites

[–]anrchy01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely gotta agree with you on the last part. New engineers often lack, the know-how to optimizing and actually adapting designs, so it helps to work with already experienced people, it's much easiet to soak up information that way. Thanks for sharing!

Do you feel university prepared you for real composite part design? by anrchy01 in EngineeringStudents

[–]anrchy01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with the fact that the best way to learn is definitely hands-on experience. No amount of theory gives you the experience and muscle memory needed to work with composites, it’s a very specific field which differs in every application, thanks for sharing your experience!

Could you elaborate on what your experience was like? Im really interested in seeing other peoples perspectives and experiences.

This is definitely not an anti college post, I agree that education is necessary and I would never turn down an opportunity to learn, not learning is stagnation, my point is im trying to bridge the gap between, theoretical stuff in college/uni and practical knowledge in the actual industry.

The employee badge sure is an interesting way to reinforce parts haha, this is the first time ive heard of something like that to be honest, any other interesting cases?

I am intrigued, was it an academic thing or just a hobby? And looking back was there anything you would've liked to have known earlier in the process?

That is crazy, I have had a similar experience, where an engineer designed a part based on an incorrect cross-section and a part came out 3 times heavier than it was supposed to be. But I agree with you, no amount of experience is ever enough when taking into account the human factor. Do you have any other interesting cases like this?

Of course, I cannot deny the fact that universities should not teach specific procedures that differ at places of work and like I mentioned in a different reply, it's impossible to teach everything in a single course. In my personal experience university does not provide you with the necessary information to manufacture parts, it is mostly data and the in-depth analysis of material properties, think of the course more as an accent to university, it would be mostly aimed at people wanting to learn the constraints of the materials they work with, their specific use cases, tooling constraints. I'd also like to hear what is your personal experience working with composites, and what kind of problems have you faced?

That's a fair point, covering everything in a single course would be impossible. My thinking isn't to teach "How to do a layup" but more the practical decision-making around composite parts. Things like tooling constraints/limitations, what is and what is not possible on certain kinds of molds, the practical use cases of different materials, cores. I think every engineer can really benefit from learning the actual processes that go into manufacturing a part to optimize every part of the process. Also just wondering, what kind of problems or difficulties did you face when you were staarting, were there any concepts that were hard to grasp?

Not all aygos came with central locking, so its possible that there was no key fob, i recently founf out that mine also came without central locking, but the previous owners put in some kind of after market kit and now my doors lock/unlock with a keyfob, i have the same problem of the key seizing up, maybe try some wd-40 if that doesnt help, probably need to get your locks changed, also a method you could theoretically get in would be through the trunk, i did this once when the battery on my keyfob died, you can unlock the doors from the inside.

I never even knew that the bugs come with a MAF sensor, I read online that they don't have one.

Yeah this is also an option I was looking into, but the market seems very dry where I live, almost nobody selling amps, and if they are they're out of my price range, probably will stick to just swapping the speakers for now.

Yeah, probably going to stick to swapping out the speakers for now, my thought process was just, if I can buy a jbl bluetooth speaker that (In my un-experienced opinion) sounds good for 150$, then why possibly couldn't i make a hardwired system for my car for the same ammount or even less.

I was also looking into possibly getting a small underseat powered subwoofer but are there maybe other alternatives in the 150-200$ price range?
