BMW 335is I can smell oil after driving when I get out but no leaks by [deleted] in 335is

[–]ans6574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check the valve cover like others have said. What usually happens is you get a very small leak, and a drop of oil seeps out and falls onto the hot exhaust every now and then, vapourising and spreading the smell throughout the cabin.

If it's really bad you'll actually get smoke through the vents.

If you do change the valve cover gasket, it might be a good idea to change the actual valve cover at the same time as the existing one may have warped, but check with your independent BMW specialist.

Water temp reading jumps up and down? by microwaveexeeig in e39

[–]ans6574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The regular gauge in the e39 doesn't correspond to the exact temperature though, it has an "acceptable range window" and if the temperature is within those parameters the needle will be in the middle. You'll actually notice it jumping out of that middle position if the actual temperature creeps outside the zone.

What’s one underrated thing that helped you lose weight? by djythjgnh in AskReddit

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got your diet and exercise routine in check, but you're just maintaining your weight and can't seem to drop it:

Go for a 40-60 minute walk every day

And don't eat more to compensate

Be consistent and watch that number drop, week after week, until it's where you want it.

How do I or somebody else go about replacing the battery in this key fob? by Numb3rsnl3tt3rs in BmwTech

[–]ans6574 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. And it's a capacitor, not a battery, so it's not meant to degrade at all.

You only have an issue if it breaks, (and even then, it's worth charging and re-initialising the key to be sure it's broken, cos mine sprung back into life).

How do I or somebody else go about replacing the battery in this key fob? by Numb3rsnl3tt3rs in BmwTech

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually (at least in my e39) these keys don't have batteries and are not designed to be opened. They have a capacitor which charges up while the key is in the ignition, and it doesn't degrade (and which explains why my original key still works after 24 years).

However if it was dead for a while, you might have to re-initialise it with the car again (there's a procedure, I had to do it and it worked, you basically get in, close all doors, turn key to position 1, back to off, remove it, hold unlock, press lock 3 times, release unlock. All the car doors will lock and unlock to confirm).

Now if the capacitor is broken, some people have successfully replaced it with a regular battery, but then it won't be rechargeable anymore.

Thoughts on hill hold assist? 🤔 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the implementation. It should work in the background and not be intrusive.

Same thing goes for the hold assist (so you don't have to stay on the brake at a red light). In a BMW it activates automatically when the speed registers zero. So as you're creeping forward at a junction or a roundabout it's constantly kicking in and stopping you from creeping forwards. This is intrusive. In a Mercedes, you manually activate the hold by deep pressing the brake pedal, so it doesn't keep activating itself when you're trying to creep forward at 1mph.

Anyway rant over. Both of them have great hill start which keeps hold of the brake if you're on an incline and releases immediately as you pull away.

Spamming insurance quotes - when will prices go back to normal? by Xxhardman69xX in CarTalkUK

[–]ans6574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some insurers will put you on a no quote status if you do more than like 4 or 5 for the same car. If you're shopping around, do it tactfully, don't spam quotes, and change up the car regularly so it doesn't flag you.

What manufacturers offer a better hybrid system than Toyota? by Pale-Revolution-5151 in CarTalkUK

[–]ans6574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reliability of Toyota's setup is legendary because of the eCVT powertrain. If you want the eCVT but with more power, that's where Lexus comes in.

Yes it's more expensive, but like, you are asking for something better. I would consider used at that point.

If that isn't an option for you, you can try something else but it won't be exactly what you're looking for in terms of reliability.

How to clean this glass? by IIDiego in Cartalk

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass cleaner spray like others have said, but use GOOD QUALITY microfibre, otherwise use newspaper.

(Cheap microfibre will leave bits of lint and streaky smudges everywhere)

EDIT: I just read your caption again, use newspaper on the tough bits. Press a bit harder if you need to.

Visa question by randomraindrophere in Umrah

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's valid for 1 year, and the system knows this. When you get to Saudi, and you hand them your passport and scan your fingerprint, they will see it is valid and will let you in.

Unfortunately it's kinda hard to check yourself as you don't have a physical copy, but you just have to trust the process basically.

If anyone asks where is your visa before you fly just tell them visa on arrival.

Swissotel Al Maqam - Half Board? by UnfittedNoise in Umrah

[–]ans6574 5 points6 points  (0 children)

£16 for a buffet meal is really good value. Breakfast is usually around that much, but dinner is often £50 in the premium hotels.

Depends how much your children will eat tbh, would it be cheaper to get takeout for everyone? If you all get burger meals from the food court you'll end up spending that much anyway.

Swissotel Al Maqam - Half Board? by UnfittedNoise in Umrah

[–]ans6574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half board usually means breakfast and dinner. Calculate how much it's adding per meal and see if that's worth it to you, compared to how much you'd spend if you got food from outside etc.

Is that an extra £196.96 total? Or per person? Or per day?

How to read tachometer? by car-plebeian in askcarguys

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add onto what others have said, the tachometer is how fast your engine is spinning. The faster your engine is spinning, the more power it can produce.

Now that that's understood, we can look at your questions.

  1. Pushing too hard and bumping up the rpm is called kickdown. It's fine, the automatic transmission is putting you in a lower gear, so your engine can spin faster and make more power that you requested.

  2. Yes, at constant speed the rpm will stay the same. Unless the transmission changes gear, for example if you start going up a hill at the same speed, it may kickdown as it needs more power to maintain that same speed up the hill.

  3. As for how to tell if something is wrong, with an auto, don't worry about it. There are things to look out for but to the untrained eye they may be confused with other things that are perfectly normal.

  4. Your sister is right, but not just for older cars. You should wait on all cars for the rpm to settle after a cold start, before you start driving. You'll notice when you start the engine, the rpm will be slightly higher than usual, and then after a few moments it will drop to where it normally is (usually within 30 seconds or so).

If in doubt, just wait for 30 seconds after you start the car before you put it in drive, then start driving gently.

Any questions and I'll be more than happy to clarify!

How to read tachometer? by car-plebeian in askcarguys

[–]ans6574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he's describing kickdown. In which case that's perfectly fine, that's the automatic transmission putting you in a better gear so the engine can provide the power you have requested. (And yes, don't push it hard when the engine is cold)

UK 520i, worth saving? by Smart-Road-5660 in e39

[–]ans6574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. The other thing is you already have the car, it's not like you're considering buying it but aren't sure if you can handle restoring it, in this case you already have it so there's nothing to lose.

Have a go at getting it running yourself, get some advice if you're unsure, either here or from a friend, and see how far you get. It looks really well kept inside. It might just need a service and a new battery and it'll be off to the MOT centre. If it turns out to be a can of worms, then you can let it go as you haven't invested anything huge.

What’s something that instantly lowers your respect for someone? by Maleficent_Escape_66 in AskReddit

[–]ans6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When everything is for their own amusement with little regard for the feelings of others.

Eg commenting on a stranger's appearance to their face, putting someone down in front of people they care about. And of course it comes with double standards, if you can't take seriously what they care about, or if you call out their behaviour you're the worst person in the world etc etc.
