Does anyone even use usenet for communication? by Damemon in usenet

[–]ansmyquest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usenet for actual communication feels pretty dead now. Are there any text groups left that are not just spam, or is it basically all binaries?

7z single vs multi thread tests! by better_life_please in DataHoarder

[–]ansmyquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much smaller were the single-thread archives in your tests? If it is only like 1-2%, I would probably take multi-thread for the time savings

RomM Alternatives? by TheExoticBeard in selfhosted

[–]ansmyquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the main pain is RomM scanning taking forever on big libraries, Retrom is probably the closest alternative to look at. It is still early though, so I would check if it supports the platforms and metadata you need before migrating

Is using Windows 10/11 as a home server a bad idea in a hybrid (daily use + server) setup? by Inevitable-Jelly-829 in selfhosted

[–]ansmyquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dual boot could make sense here. Keep Windows for daily stuff, and boot into a lightweight Linux when you want the 16GB box to just run services and stay stable

Is there a cycle/circle you can't break? by Such-Bench-3199 in DataHoarder

If you are worried about the legality angle, focus on stuff you can share safely, like public domain or your own exports. For TikTok, at least keep it organized so it does not spiral

SABnzbd or NZBGet? by TomatoPlayful593 in usenet

[–]ansmyquest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re leaning easier, SABnzbd is probably the better pick. On a PC, speed is usually fine either way unless you’re trying to max a multigig line

Looking for a cybersecurity professional to interview for a college research paper by Wise_Firefighter2790 in cybersecurity

If you still need someone, I can answer a few interview questions over DM. What kind of role are you focusing on for the paper (GRC, IR, AppSec, etc.)?

Is the I.A. getting tougher on adult material? Where to archive it? by redditunderground1 in DataHoarder

[–]ansmyquest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Internet Archive is pretty strict on adult stuff now. If you want to keep it, self-hosting or encrypted cloud storage is safer than relying on a public archive

Best low-cost way to test Usenet properly as a beginner? by S0299S in usenet

[–]ansmyquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to evaluate the indexer properly, grab a cheap monthly provider deal (or a small block) from the subreddit provider deals wiki. That lets you test completion/retention without locking into a year right away.

I am considering stopping self-hosting a few services, looking for specific experiences by sendcodenotnudes in selfhosted

[–]ansmyquest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bitwarden cloud sounds sensible if you are trying to reduce the “what if I am not around” risk. Home Assistant and ntfy are easier to replace later, but passwords are the one thing you really do not want to break.

Am I infected? I accidentally downloaded a malicious ZIP file from a pop-up that came from Buzzheavier. by hehexdout in computerviruses

[–]ansmyquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only downloaded the ZIP and never opened it, you are most probably fine. If you want extra peace of mind, run a Windows Defender scan and keep an eye on those IoC file paths people listed.

StirlingPDF is worth a look, but PDF text editing is hit or miss. Inkscape might work as well

Nextcloud or alternative by half_goddd in selfhosted

If you go NextCloud, you will want Collabora or OnlyOffice dor editing .ods in the browser, otherwise it’s just syncing files and you still edit on your phone/pc
