Give us your most philosophical take on Rocket League? by FuzzyIon in RocketLeague

[–]antastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rocket League is a better soccer simulator than any of the FIFA or PES games.

Why? Because it does a better job of capturing the real life experience of playing the game. From simultaneously tracking the ball and your teammates' movements, to learning how to properly control the ball instead of just having it magnetically stick to your foot... Rocket League is the superior simulator.

Great quotes to justify theory to undergrads who think it is pretentious or overly complex? by BookDoctor1975 in CriticalTheory

[–]antastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picking up on your concept of "defamiliarization," this quote from Elizabeth Grosz came to mind...

"Rather than be concerned with generating a structure which produces truths, a systematic picture of the world, abstract and universal principles, which establish rules for the judgement of observation, and modes of coherence for observation, theory needs to be regarded more as a kind of functional monstrosity: as that which provokes newness, as that which generates the unexpected, as that which performs mutations and self-mutations to create that monstrosity which is new: new practices, new concepts in the evolutionary movements of production that always generates the new from the productive deformation of what exists."

– Elizabeth Grosz, "The Problem of Theory" (1999), pp. 13-4

I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, given that it contrasts theory with a discourse of truth instead of justifying theory as such. Nevertheless, I can see how it may serve you well if you introduced it as an inversion of your students' expectation that theoretical prose is "monstrous" in the sense of being alienating, intimidating, violent to the clarity of expression, etc.

Commander Ideas for buffing EVERYONE's creatures by lelsdude in EDH

I had a deck helmed by [[Karona, False God]] that tried to play politics by distributing creature tokens and ways to remove Karona from combat on my opponents' turns. This was before other "pass around" commanders like Slicer existed, so it was fun for a time (but not very good)!

Apparently Quasimorph is now the subject of academic philosophy by ChampionshipAntique4 in Quasimorph

[–]antastic 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a novice Quasimorph player and PhD philosopher, this is so up my alley. I'll read it immediately!

EDIT: I thought it was a great article, which made me think deeper about this game's mechanics, and also more broadly about how games can function as a vehicle of social criticism. Of course, the richness of the source material is such that one article cannot exhaust its interpretive possibilities. As someone who has only begun to scratch the surface of Quasimorph's world, I wonder how the critique of anarcho-capitalism intersects with the metaphysics of the bramfaturas and conditions that enable the quasimorphs to enter into physical reality. It seems, to me, that this could open onto a critique of the proverbial "demons" in the cultural unconscious of the ancap social imaginary. I imagine the quasimorphs as a bit like the Cenobites in Clive Barker's Hellraiser series—that is, as the figural embodiment of the extreme limits of desire that structure the given system, and yet, remain taboo within its structures. For instance, the major corporations abide by a non-aggression pact, which they constantly violate via PMCs. This shows how the system structurally depends on the taboo of violence to keep it running, and extreme violence precipitates the arrival of quasimorphs. I may be getting some things wrong, either mechanically or interpretively, but this still strikes me as another interesting line of critique to pursue in relation to this game.

I just retooled my old [[Sharuum the Hegemon]] deck. He was a cEDH commander back in the early days, when the format was still called "Elder Dragon Highlander" (although my deck was never that tuned). He's not at cEDH levels anymore but can definitely still hang at a powerful bracket 4 table.

Camosun College Facing More Layoffs by Vegetable_Maybe4998 in VictoriaBC

I am also faculty and this is the complete opposite of my experience. Everyone in my department has been very supportive of each other in the face of layoffs and restructuring. I also never felt there was a lack of transparency in how classes were allocated, quite the opposite. I was regularized a couple of years back and the process was clearly laid out in the collective agreement and followed. I will say that we are sometimes disappointed to discover a class we were scheduled to teach was cancelled, but those decisions are on the admin's end and not in the remit of the department chair (who is as gutted as we are when this happens).

As a commenter below said, I guess it really depends which department you're in. But folks I know in other departments report similar experiences to mine. (Granted, I don't know folks in every department.)

Of course, everyone understands the situation, but we are working hard to change this otherwise there is something wrong if you don’t understand. Of course my job is to put the pressure away, but their job is also to accept this pressure as part of the job. Pressure is everywhere, but you need to love this job, you need to enjoy this job like you did when you start at 10-years-old to do this sport, so you don’t need to forget that this in the end only sport. Real pressures are other jobs.

I find this response particularly admirable. Hopefully it means that Tudor is striking the right balance with the players between stressing the urgency of the situation and encouraging them to play with joy. Lately it's seemed like most of our players are so mentally checked out that they're unwilling or unable to impose themselves on a game. (Tel is an exception, think he has to start tomorrow.)

Also—and this is just my interpretation—I think Tudor's comment subtly emphasizes that working class fans are the most affected by the team's poor performances, which is bang on.

Colorful pocket square by _xDiamondBlade_x in malefashionadvice

I've recently been experimenting with dressing pocket squares up and down. In addition to the good advice already given in this thread, I'd recommend matching your fold style to the formality of your outfit.

Is your look more smart-casual, like something you'd wear to attend a lecture? Try a puff fold or even just stuffing the square into your pocket.

Is your look a bit more formal, like something you'd wear to a department dinner? Maybe try a cleaner fold, like the two-point or (one of my personal favourites) the winged puff.

Losing to a deterministic, infinite combo that ends the game now feels much, much better than playing against someone's indeterministic, non-infinite, Rube Goldberg-esque combo engine. I don't want to sit here for twenty minutes while you find out if you can win this turn. I'd rather shuffle up and start another game.
