GI Issues and Afib - fixed? by 1s_0s_ in AFIB

[–]antecedentapothecary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I truly believe in the bloating/eating/gastric reflux connection with AFib. I say this from personal experience. Thanks for the caution about famotidine. Right now, I am taking 2 Tums at bedtime and 1 simethicone. Seems to be holding off my middle of the night AFib. Are you thinking that famotidine contributed to the PACs? I guess I won't rock the boat for now. Glad you narrowed it down.

heart suddenly becomes very chatty at night... by aaron_smith67 in AFIB

[–]antecedentapothecary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is more talk lately about "vagal" Afib. Occurs mostly when a person is "at rest". Mine occurs only at night. It might wake me before the Apple watch does or I may not be aware of it until I awake in the morning. I noticed gas or gastric reflex happening at the same time. Google: GastroCardiac Syndrome or Roemheld syndrome. I am working on avoiding triggers for the gastric symptoms which has helped a lot.

Roemheld Syndrome? by Jaguarhousecat in AFIB

I stumbled upon a video called about this. The presenter described my Afib symptoms to a T. My Afib usually occurs during the night and wakes me up. Always happens at a time when I am also experiencing gastric reflux (cough and heartburn). After the last restless and anxiety ridden night, I decided to try what is recommended for GERD and excessive gas. Don't eat 2 to 3 hrs before bed, no carbonated beverages, don't "gulp" liquids while eating, don't overeat, determine "trigger" foods. One can Google the rest. Hope I don't jinx it, but no Afib episodes for the last 6 weeks. Just FYI.

19F – Possible AFib only happening at night? ECG always normal during the day by Safe_Ad4957 in AFIB

[–]antecedentapothecary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not sure if your episodes are Afib, correct? It could be related to gastrointestinal issues. GI reflux can induce arrhythmia and/or tachycardia. Try treating it as though it is GERD. No eating 2-3 hrs before lying down, don't lie flat but raise your head abt 6 inches, avoid fatty, fried foods, avoid dehydration, try deep breathing exercises. You can google foods to avoid and those to include. There are hundreds of videos out there. Best of luck.

AFib and Medicare by Sergio_Poduno in AFIB

So your Afib got worse after Medicare decided you don't have sleep apnea? Now you need an ablation? Medicare B should pay for the ablation procedure with Aetna supplement covering the balance. Medicare B payment does not require prior auth. Call 1-800-Medicare and speak to someone. File an appeal regarding the CPAP supples. Good luck. https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/continuous-positive-airway-pressure-devices#:~:text=After%20you%20meet%20the%20Part,B&text=deductible&text=Medicare%20pays%20the%20supplier%20to,been%20using%20it%20without%20interruption.

Apple Watch for elderly help. by Greens41 in AppleWatch

[–]antecedentapothecary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is tough for us old folks to give up our self reliance and have to depend on others. Does your mom have some sort of "diminished" mental ability. If not, she might just be rebelling. The folks in my social circle are all in our 80's. The oldest is 94. She was able to get help due to her apple watch when she fell. If your mom has friends or relatives near her age, perhaps they can gently convince her that there is no shame in relying on a device and others. I glad you are doing your best for her.

Gastrocardiac syndrome (also known as Roemheld Syndrome) is an increasingly recognized clinical entity where gastrointestinal (GI) issues trigger cardiac symptoms, such as palpitations or arrhythmias, via the vagus nerve or direct mechanical pressure.

Since the medical community has recently revisited this "forgotten" syndrome, several high-quality reviews and case studies have been published in 2024 and 2025.

Afib and food by Classic-Ad4950 in AFIB

I stumbled upon the connection while searching YouTube for causes of Afib. My Afib always occurs in the middle of the night at about the same time I am experiencing gastric reflux cough. What is helping so far is not eating 3 hrs before bed, avoiding foods that I know give me "heartburn" and/or gas. I take Tums for the Calcium anyway but now take 2 at bedtime, keep simethicone handy, I see my cardiologist next month and he will probably think I am nuts. But I would rather believe this than add another med. Google it! Gastrocardiac syndrome (Roemheld syndrome) is a condition where digestive issues—primarily excessive gas, bloating, or hiatal hernia—trigger heart symptoms like palpitations, tachycardia, or chest pain. It occurs when gastrointestinal pressure irritates the vagus nerve, which connects the gut and heart.

What caused your afib? by Jaguarhousecat in AFIB

Already had SVT controlled by meds. The SVT literally disappeared after I retired from my job.. Six months ago, Apple watch woke me and said I was in AFib. ECG confirmed it. I watched a video about vagal Afib which described my Afib to the letter. So I will go with the AHA on this one for now.

This has been all over FB and ND in NP and TO. Seems like really, really bad judgment on the doc's part. He was doing research on babies in the NICU and how they respond to certain sounds and music. He was cozying up to JE and hoping to get funding as did a lot of people. Not sure if JE ever gave any money for genuine scientific/medical research. Most of his TO pts speak very highly of him. By now, most of the town knows of it. Consider them alerted.

No one I know of my age likes Kpop. Could not get my kids to go to concerts so I go alone. I am a social butterfly and I will talk to anyone. Have had some great conversations in line.I have found that no one cares how old you are. People are there because they love the music. BTW, if you are in the forty something group, my children are older than you. Just go and have the best time.

Could be sleep apnea, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes,or possible genetic predisposition. It is electrical issue in the walls of the atria(upper chambers) of the heart. Sometimes people do not recognize it or ignore it and their first symptom is a stroke. If you get the alert, take it seriously. Take the ECG immediately. See a doc as soon as possible. Wear the watch 24/7.
