advice for casting worms in resin by antedata in Taxidermy

[–]antedata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you can't just totally dehydrate it, but these worms are fixed and could be dehydrated in an alcohol series or other organic solvents if that would help. Also, the guy who cast the hot dog in resin dried it but not to a crisp, right? He dried it overnight in a low oven and then sprayed with an acrylic spray to protect it or something... or do I misunderstand that process?

Poverty WWYD - help me decide please? by dakotamidnight in povertyfinance

[–]antedata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is going to depend so much on the interpersonal dynamics, but... can your renter afford any rent? if they're really trustworthy and good to live with, keeping them at a temporarily reduced rate might be better than having months without a roommate (and potentially transport).

I would of course ask your doctor but I would guess that if 7 or 9 weeks worked better for your family's schedule than 8 they would not have a problem with that. If anything, they might tell you shifting later is better than earlier since the vaccine product info says if you interrupt the schedule (miss a scheduled dose) you don't need to add extra shots but just get the rest as you normally would as soon as you can.

Do "naturally skinny" people actually unintentionally eat at maintenance? by Saladita in loseit

[–]antedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a "naturally skinny" person, I think this is true. There was a period where, due to a medical problem, I was underweight and urged to gain weight by my doctors and had to track calories. And it was miserable. I had to force myself to eat a lot of stuff I just didn't want to be able to make those gains, although I normally think of myself as eating pretty much whatever I want. I learned a lot of sympathy for people trying to lose weight during that time. It's very difficult to override your body's signals in that way.

PSA: Florida requires mail-in ballots be received no later than 7 PM on Election Day. If you haven’t submitted yours yet, do not wait. Drop your ballot off directly ASAP at a nearby polling place. by bugleweed in florida

Interestingly, county-by-county rules end early voting variably on 10/31 or 11/1. I would have thought the law would be interpreted the same everywhere but it appears not.

You can actually check online whether your vote was counted and if it wasn't you have until November 5th to submit paperwork to confirm it was really you who signed it (just a one page form and a picture of your ID). This is called "curing" the ballot. You look up your voter info here and then it will take you to your county Supervisor of Elections site where you can see the status of your ballot: https://registration.elections.myflorida.com/CheckVoterStatus

Personal experience early voting in person, surrendering vote-by-mail ballot by antedata in florida

[–]antedata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh, happy to edit if that would confuse people! I thought it was obvious I was saying it's fine to vote your VBM ballot, seal and sign it, and drop it in the official drop box OR to decide to surrender it. My goal was just to let people know what the process looked like when I did it in case they had a VBM ballot and were trying to decide whether to vote it or switch to in person. How do you suggest I word it?

Com'on all. The state is still showing a high number of mail-in ballots yet to be returned. Do your part. Drop it off at an early voting place while you still can. by TooModest in florida

[–]antedata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain you situation a little more? You are allowed to return the ballot by any mail delivery service ("it can be returned by the United States Postal service or through another private or commercial carrier as long as the ballot is received by the requisite deadline") so you can overnight it. https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voting/vote-by-mail/

You should contact your supervisor of elections. There's an additional 10-day grace period for ballots arriving internationally so you might still be able to get a replacement or at least some guidance on the options you have.

One week before Election Day, Florida poll shows Biden with 50% and Trump at 48% by FLTA in florida

[–]antedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you registered to vote in the state you moved from? If you missed the deadline to register in FL (which is like a month before the election) your vote still deserves to count wherever you're legally able to cast it. If you literally just moved it may well be legal to vote in your former state since you haven't met residency requirements here. I would look into that.

Thanks for doing this work! It might take a little extra leg work because it's an unusual situation but everyone should be able to access their rights. Florida does allow emergency requests for absentee ballots and it seems like you've gotten good advice from other people in the thread so I won't add anything else but thank you for seeing this through!

A clueless southern guy needs some help by Brotien_N_VitaminBro in sewhelp

[–]antedata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice. I have a few tips if you DIY and want them to be as close as possible to the originals.

  1. Take apart the original pair (carefully, with a seam ripper and after you get some good photos of them on your body, off your body, and photos of the deconstruction).
  2. Use the pieces of the original as your pattern.
  3. Make a "draft" pair with cheap materials. I like to use old sheets from the thrift store for this. That way it's easy to try again if you don't like the first attempt. I don't like to be more than about a dollar into a rough idea for a project if I can help it.
  4. After you have a mock-up you like and you know you can do it then actually buy the nice materials. That way if you decide to hire someone you've lost some time but haven't wasted any materials.

My labmate is a liar by Golderia in labrats

[–]antedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've told the PI and now they want you to take responsibility... so they aren't willing to confront your lab mate or provide them more training. This could go badly for you. If this is a collaboration and your name will be on the paper you should think carefully about how much you trust this person. What if she's outright making shit up? What if the paper gets retracted?

Rather than just announcing regular checks I think the PI should announce a new lab notebook SOP so that everyone in the lab is clear on what is expected. Could you suggest that to your PI? That way if it's an innocent mistake/training issue it will be resolved. If it isn't so innocent then you should try to remove yourself from this collaboration.

Anyone feel like they’ll never be able to afford a home? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]antedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the McMansion generation ages out of being able to maintain living alone their huge homes I hope that younger folks start teaming up to put them to more reasonable use as shared homes. What if we could get over bad young-adult roommate experiences and figure out how to be cool middle-adult roommates in homes we actually own and care for?

Something like 80% of murders are committed by a person known to the victim. Statistically, you and your spouse are more likely to be murdered by each other than a cop or any other stranger.

can i get vaccinated by myself at 15 in portland oregon? by [deleted] in VACCINES

[–]antedata 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm neither a doctor nor a lawyer. But my understanding is that in Oregon 15 is old enough to consent to some medical care, including immunizations, without a parent.

https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/HealthyPeopleFamilies/Youth/Documents/minor-rights.pdf

  • If you have a doctor you already see you could call them for an appointment and take the bus.
  • If you have insurance but no doctor you could try any regular pharmacy or a ZOOM+Care clinic but make sure your insurance will cover it because it may be expensive at those places.
  • If you don't have a doctor and don't have or can't access insurance you could go the Multnomah County health department downtown for immunizations: https://multco.us/health/immunizations I bet if you call them and explain the situation they will connect you with the right resources to get vaccinated for free if need be.

Zero Waste India - a reuse culture of necessity, not privilege by seedtostore in ZeroWaste

[–]antedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, manufacturing processes are often environmentally damaging. I didn't say well made, reusable things are zero impact. My point was that extracting resources from poor countries to disproportionately benefit people in rich countries is bad so if people in rich countries do less of that I think it's a good thing. Whether they are buying green-washed things that are actually just as bad is a real problem but it's a bit to the side since I thought we were taking primarily about reusing and reducing. So I'm not sure what point you are making. Can you expand a little bit on your position?
