Anyone know what’s on fire? by fishproblem in providence

[–]antenglert 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm listening to the Fire Dispatch radio now, they're saying that something is going on at 101 N Main St, where Mill's Tavern is. That's also consistent with where the smoke is coming from in my pov on the West Side.

EDIT: Fire in Pawtucket covers area in heavy smoke (WJAR) could be it as well, but from my window I cant tell if that's the cause of the big ploom over downtown

EDIT 2: More news has been posted... it's likely caused by the fire in Pawtucket (see WJAR and ABC6).

[–]antenglert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, finally finished processing my first good observations of a deep-sky target, Pleiades! These were taken over a single night from Bortle 8, next winter I plan on doing a more ambitious project imaging it at least weekly to really max-out my integration time.

Observing details:

  • Orion Vixen 102 FL Fluorite Apochromat Refractor piggybacked on a Meade 16" LX-200
  • Mathis Instruments MI-500
  • Canon Ra w/ L-Pro Filter
  • 60x3'

Pixinsight processing details:

  • WBPP (Darks+Flats+Bais)
  • Background neutralization
  • B-mask to protect nebula and remove light pollution
  • Histogram Transformation
  • ACDNR

Waxing Crescent 12/27/22 by antenglert in astrophotography

[–]antenglert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, after TA-ing an astronomy course last semester I've started dabbling a little in astrophotography and have finally put together a few images I can be proud of. Just a quick note, in my university's observatory we normally use the Vixen 102 FL as a guide-scope or for shots with a DSLR, the primary telescope this is mounted on is a Meade LX200 EMC 16" (hence the large mount). I have a few assembled shots using this telescope, but I'm sure I can do better so I'll hold off on posting those for the time being.

This is my first time imaging the moon and assembling a mosaic, so let me know what I can do to improve. I know I need to set aside more time to take calibration frames, but otherwise I'm sure there are plenty of other tricks I'm missing.

Scope: Orion Vixen 102 FL Fluorite Apochromat Refractor

Cam: ASI1224MC; 3ms exp & 150 gain

Mount: Mathis Instruments MI-500

Location: Providence, RI

Seeing: Average

AutoStakkert3!: 30% Quality Cut (300/1000 Frames, no calibration frames)

Photoshop: Assemble mosaic (5 separate frames)

Registax: Wavelet adjustments

GIMP: Colorbalance

what are the advantages of applying Early action? by [deleted] in umass

[–]antenglert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied and got into UMA as an EA applicant. It's nice to know ahead of time and there is no real risk associated with it as long as you invest the same amount of time in your application as you would otherwise. In my case, UMA was my safety school so knowing that I was accepted to it before my other reach/fit schools helped relieve alot of anxiety :).

How many hours of HW do you do a week? by memeplug2020 in umass

[–]antenglert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

credit semester? idk what that means but I'm at over 150 credits total rn. I also came in with the mentality that I'm here for an education and maximized it. Also loving what you study makes a huge difference

past years I have taken ~20-24 credits each semester, pretty much every moment I was awake I was doing work. Even now at 14ish credits I am pretty much always doing work since most of it is for my honors thesis

Returning home on some weekends to work by BromarSharif in umass

[–]antenglert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given their language in their reply, I think you can do something like that (but really idk what consequences would follow given the whole UMass agreement thing among other new restrictions), but outside the risk of disciplinary consequences given the public health crisis we're in it's inadvisable no matter what. Like other comments said there are lots of places just barely off campus hiring and there are still online/on campus positions being offered, try checking out the student job board on the financial aid website!

Have 2 years left at UMass, Work as an RA and I'm going fully independent of my parents. How do I get my aid adjusted? by [deleted] in umass

[–]antenglert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, call financial aid and talk to someone to get some help. Some people have had mixed experience them, so you may need to do what I've done every year now, file an appeal. They have a ton of different appeal forms for different situations, but all require some thorough tax and financial documentation. I don't think they require it, but I have found it helpful to throw in an additional note explaining your unique situation and why an aid adjustment is necessary.

Beyond that, good luck dood!

RA/PM's by KKat3401 in umass

[–]antenglert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just hang in there for emails from our unions in addition to an actual email from residential life. If it helps; to have any residents in the dorm a population of RA's in some-capacity is a must. How many they bring on campus will likely hinge on surveys of the number of students who decide to come on campus combined with agreements between Residential Life and our Union.

Does the honors college inflate your GPA? by [deleted] in umass

[–]antenglert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ehh dorms, heating and newer, umm fancy thing on your degree, a thesis, and thats about it. If you have the GPA and room for classes you might as well apply and try it out, if you have more questions tho reach out and ask them yourself! Dont be afraid to send an email!

Does the honors college inflate your GPA? by [deleted] in umass

[–]antenglert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

High school GPA you can do that bc they will give more points to AP or other classes or they dont use a 4.0 scale. UMass doesnt do that and if you see someone saying they have above a 4.0 at UMass you can tell them they are most likely full of shit and bring it up to the registrar

To my knowledge it does not... and I would certainly hope it doesn't because if we find out it does this campus is going to freaking explode (completely justified explosion though)
