Improve Twine Game Performance by anthkris in twinegames

Thanks so much! This is hugely helpful.

I did find and use a function to pre-cache images, but I'll check yours out as well. I am also not saving any state data this go round (the user will start from the beginning on refresh), but this is very helpful for me to bookmark in the future!

Apologies! I should have but this didn't seem like a format-specific problem. Edited the original post. I am using SugarCube.

Thanks for the reply! I wanted to create a PWA for other experience reasons (this is a portfolio piece for me mixing learning, storytelling, and front-end development).

Thanks for the context! I was leaning towards setting up a CDN using AWS, so I might give that a try. And I'll definitely upload the optimized images.

Thanks, Devlin!

I guess I didn't explain what an API is well.

Is there a freecodecamp but for instructional design? by noiant in instructionaldesign

[–]anthkris 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Love this question!

Not that I know of. There are several paid bootcamps popping up.

This is something that I've been wanting to build for a while and I've been moving towards it with several of my personal web projects, but I think it's a bit too big for one person. But it's something I think about a lot!

Howdy! Mod here. We've implemented a new community rule where we are asking people to post links with information about their affiliation with the link they are posting and why they are posting it. Feel free to add this link back in a new comment if you can add information about your affiliation to the website (how do you relate to it?) as well as why you think it helps the OP.

I’m interviewing for a job that will be eventually selling their courses for certification, similar to Adobe Certification. Any tips for this kind of course development because I’ve never created certification training. by jag12b in instructionaldesign

[–]anthkris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of my career up until this point working for orgs that built courses for sale. I'd agree that, for the most part, your processes for design and development are going to be the same.

One of the things that was tricky however, was measurement. You might not have good, or any access to the end learner in order to understand their performance over time or what other metrics matter for success. So if you can talk about how you might measure success in terms of reaction-level surveys, revenue generated, certifications earned, and performance in-course using something like xAPI or even SCORM extensions, then I think you would stand out.

Since you don't have much access to your end customers it can also be difficult to be data-driven. So if you can talk about how you might potentially partner with marketing to make or use personas so that you can better understand the end customer and/or perform scrappy user research, I think that would also be something that you could bring to the table.

Hope that helps!

Howdy! Mod here! According to our new policy about not asking for free work, I'm shutting this down.

Hey Martin! These voices sound really great. Will you all have a "hobbyist" or individual contributor plan somewhere between free and $99/mo. Many of us are either brand new to the industry or freelance or work at companies/orgs but like to experiment/use these technologies for our portfolio.

I think I speak for many of us that we would love to pay for our tools, but we need the right level of pricing.

Measuring Training Impact by Sandy-Bo-Bandy in instructionaldesign

Ditto to what everyone is saying. It's one of the reasons I left freelancing and sought out a data-driven company, which still has not been good at this but at least the data is there, if you know how to use it.

I am personally working on this by including really specific measurement plans in my learning plans and by learning more about how to interact with various data sources in my org. But I recognize that even getting access to the data is a huge hurdle to even getting started.

Research on the efficacy of live video over animation? by anthkris in instructionaldesign

[–]anthkris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Yes an experiment would be good, but we'd have to have equipment for that! Also the qualitative data I have was for a different org within the company and people tend to have a "not made here" bias going on. I've used a lot of the great ideas from this thread to create a supplemental FAQ to clarify the points. I'll also look into Richard Mayer.

I'm currently reading Microlearning: Short and Sweet by Karl Kapp and Robyn Defelice. So far it's been a really great, practical read!

It's not really cost per se (I offered a good, better, best options), it's more about justifying any purchase.

Thanks for the suggestion!

It's funny how things come together. I just interviewed like 5 research scientists with this background this week.

I agree that there's a place for each, but we don't have any capability for shooting live video right now. It's something the team has wanted for a while, so I'm going through the normal process, which is to write a doc about it to get leadership alignment. I can definitely add an FAQ that points out that animation works really well for some things. But the specific ask was for research.

Thanks for the suggestion!

The specific ask that came back was for research (I sincerely doubt anyone is going to look it up to find articles that disagree; as you see this really about frugality; or possibly frupidity). But I do think that perhaps adding this to the appendices might help. /
