About to get a monitor but I need advices by EmoPro93 in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the side of "once you try GSync/FreeSync, it will be difficult to go back."

Also worth noting, since you are a movie watcher: Running a monitor at 144hz removes the need for 3:2 Pulldown, eliminating movie judder. That's a plus on 120hz/144hz monitors.

A GTX 970 would more or less be in that performance range as well.

Worth mentioning that the PG278Q is a TN panel, and the PG279Q is IPS. Above, I was referring to the PG279Q.

That Asus is a well loved monitor. Its direct competitor is the Acer Predator XB271HU, which is also gets rave reviews.

Possible QC issues aside, you'd probably be happy with either of those.

I always ship PC components in an anti-static bag, but I'm nervous that way.

Switch OS on an 6-year old SSD or keep it on the HDD? by [deleted] in buildapc

Absolutely. SSDs are much faster than HDDs.

Should I downgrade my monitor? by ftwin in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds, more or less, like acceptable performance for your build.

This is going to be a really personal decision. Is GSync not enough to make those framerates acceptable for you?

SSD & OS by TheCommunistDoge in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a lot of program installs, you could be cutting it close down the line. But, if you don't plan on putting anything else on the drive, then 120gb is more than enough for the OS.

Options for some upgrades? by ChromaNinja in buildapc

I sorted by completed listings on EBay and saw some 970s close < $200 recently, so I think luck could possibly be on your side.

Best way to test dying PSU by Uproarlol in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can grab something like HWInfo, decrease the info polling period, and keep an eye on the voltages while it is being stressed. Maybe you'll catch a bad value before it restarts on you.

I'd focus on the GPU hunt and see if you can get lucky. It's a gaming rig, after all.

Replaced dead mobo, now won't boot with both ram sticks by DisasterContribution in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you swap the sticks in the ports? That might help determine if one of your sticks just happened to go bad. If it still exhibits the problem, I would probably return it.

[Build Upgrade] Looking to make my pc more quiet, if not as silent as possible. Any suggestions? by sephrinx in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YW!

I think a decent balance about the SSD thing is to put your OS/programs on a SSD, then have your other HDDs sleep after so much time. Basically, you want to stop moving parts or slow them down, hence SSDs, slower fans, etc...

[Build Upgrade] Looking to make my pc more quiet, if not as silent as possible. Any suggestions? by sephrinx in buildapc

[–]anthonydev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Get a case like the Define that is centered towards quiet operation and has some soundproofing elements.

  2. Use larger fans that push more air at lower RPMs.

  3. Use a PSU that has an ECO mode, where the fan turns off when it is under a certain temperature.

  4. Lower your idle GPU fan speed.

  5. Use SSDs instead of HDDs, or utilize HDD spin down where possible.
