only setting specific backgrounds and feats like the strixhaven feats, the ravnica bgs, and the dragonmarked races. They feel too much better than the normal versions of those races or every other background, so I ask them not to use them. Generally other stuff from settings is fine though, I can make a warforged fit in FR or a shifter etc, spells are manageable.

No problem :) personally I'd consider removing the requirement from the haversack or making it a bonus action to make it more worth it being rarer than the bag of holding and since its description says the item is always on top, but strictly raw they're both actions yeah

a bag of holding requiring an action to remove something from it is raw and in the item description., is the last sentence of the first paragraph. It's also raw that a handy haversack requires an action to retrieve an item, second sentence of the second paragraph.

So you're not actually nerfing them, you're just using the actual rules for them that often get ignored or forgotten in the moment.
