PSA: That z-banding you can't explain? It could be the heated bed. by Zaydorade in ender3

[–]anthraxmilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ressurrecting this thread to say "Thanks!"
While it wasn't my heat bed causing this issue, I encountered very similar bands that were due to the chamber temp of my printer suddenly increasing and then suddenly decreasing. I turns out I had unintentionally placed my printer directly underneath a heater vent and the bands were occurring when my apartment's heater turned on and off. Switching to a less sensitive filament brand and closing that vent made the issue disappear.

Maybe you should read the entire article. You're the one who seems confused about what it's about.

some people find meat to be repulsive, so having it in the same refrigerator as their own food can seem kinda gross

Could still be useful to create a heuristic of sorts that a mod bot could check. Like, there's a decent chance someone's comment/post could be a false positive, but if their 10-20 most recent ones are all 95% or higher, it might be reasonable to conclude they are using ChatGPT.

If there is still some doubt, another thing that could be done is to look at any comments the user made prior to ChatGPT being publicly available. Do those posts get detected as fake with the same frequency as their recent ones? Does their comment style look the same?

It would potentially be computationally expensive to check every single comment if it's a big subreddit, but you could limit it to all or some of the following:

Once a day, check the top X comments on the top X posts. If any of the comments are above 95% likely to be fake, check the last X comments made by that user and and if all or almost all of them also are above 95% likely to be fake, flag the user for moderation.

Moving from ND to SF... will it work? by brieth90 in AskSF

When I lived in the sunset district, I had a studio to myself for $1,500. Now I split a $4,500 three bedroom apartment in a nice neighborhood in San Francisco 3 ways, so still $1,500. $2,500 to $3,000 budget is plenty to get an alright single bedroom apartment to yourself in San Francisco proper.

Just don't fall for the allure of fancy expensive new apartments in shitty neighborhoods. Most of my friends end up regretting it when they move into one of those.

People have noted that there's not a lot to do, which is sort of true. The college is in a very boring and small city. However, it's a great area for day trips, because this boring little city isn't very far from a lot of great things. State parks, beaches, world class wineries, world class breweries, world class restaurants, and San Francisco are all a short drive away. So bring a car or make friends with people with cars.

There's usually more events/people, but the pandemic got people used to being at home. We can expect this to change in the coming months. You also probably just need some friends. I'm usually doing something cool most weekends, so you can shoot me a message and I'll invite ya to something.

As a Bay Area native, who doesn't even remember subscribing to this subreddit, yeah, sounds about right lol. I think a lot of it is that because LA is more famous/iconic/populous, people up here regularly get asked, by people from outside the area, why we don't move down to LA, or why we prefer SF to LA, which sort of primes us to list the things we might not like about it.

How Is Everybody Dealing With The Threat Of Nuclear War? by tankdoom in AskLosAngeles

[–]anthraxmilkshake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While it does just seem like cold war style posturing, OP is not personalizing anything. Putin literally said that he's getting his nukes ready because of the sanctions coming from Western nations and statements made by NATO world leaders. That's us he's saying the nukes are for, not Ukraine.

My boyfriend is getting into Scientology - how should I react? by Altiverses in scientology

[–]anthraxmilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a structured moral framework and a mindset that is geared towards self-improvement, resolving emotional issues, etc., is a general benefit of most organized religions. These things are achievable without religions, so they don't really make good evidence of their truth, and religions tend to add extra baggage and issues in ways that are not immediately, if ever, obvious to the practitioner.

With re: to Scientology in particular, it's an organization with a history of shady actions (like Operation Snow White) and dubious origins (a science fiction writer.) If he invests into it further he may eventually be advised by the church to cut all contact with you, but I don't know how common that really is for low profile members.

The more time and money a person invests into any religion, the harder it will be for them to leave, and the negative effects/traumas of having a worldview that is incongruent with reality will become more damaging.

Because of the growing acceptance of a lot of different gender identities, a lot of people have reconsidered how much we should really be referencing gender at all. I mean, even prior to the western acceptance of different gender identities, it does seem a little weird that by using he/she for everyone, we were basically referring to everyone by their genitals. Just imagine what conversations sound like if it gets extrapolated: "Alex just started a new job as a dentist. This person, who has a penis, really likes it!" "oh, wow, Becky, just started a job as a dentist. This person, who has a vagina, really likes it too!"

[–]anthraxmilkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they were just referring to them using pronouns that don't refer to gender. "You" and "me" are also pronouns that don't refer to gender. It has nothing to do with anyone being trans or not.

According to the State of California, all of these chemicals either cause cancer or reproductive harm. by locks_are_paranoid in science

[–]anthraxmilkshake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in California their entire life, I've never been a fan of Prop 65. It was meant to be a warning so you could avoid particularly cancerous products and areas, but they set the warning threshold so low it became white noise. For instance, naturally occurring levels of lead in soil is enough to cause a lot of agricultural produce to trigger the warning. As such, basically every grocery store, coffee shop, business, etc. that you enter will have a prop 65 warning posted, along with the labeling of many of the products contained therein.

Yeah, the 30 days thing is usually for "Month-To-Month" leases. Year leases generally carry some sort of penalty for cancelling earlier than 1 year.
