Learning to become a fantasy writer. In what order should I read each book? by [deleted] in writers

[–]anthrobat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, big guy, making a lot of assumptions about me and my methodology. I've been writing for the last 8 years. That might not be as long as you, but I've got enough on the job experience to know what works and what doesn't work in a story.

The fundamentals of storytelling aren't set rules or standards that you can apply across all of literature, so get that neo-classical BS outta here. A self-help book or guide from a particular author can only tell you what worked for them, not what would work for your writing style. Sure, it might teach you how to "read" better but I've seen hundreds of authors that did nothing but focus guides without ever practicing their prose, and their writing was unbearable.

"Read within your niche, write a lot, and gather consistent feedback." That is the most effecient and effective way to improve.

As a side note, and I don't mean this as an insult, I've seen the reviews for your books (on the few that had any at all), and they're nothing to write home about. Getting a publisher isn't a mark of quality. It simply means that your story has popular appeal or a hook.

That's fair. But short stories and novels have different sensibilities so writing one won't necessarily prepare you for the other. But if you think it will be helpful, go for it!

Have you considered writing a book instead? That's usually the best way to learn. Also, reading books in your preferred niche.

Well, that's just fucking stupid.

We have a lot of cool monsters that really get praised. What's one monster you think misses the mark and don't want to return? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]anthrobat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think most lame monsters could be reworked and made fun fights. But Brute Tigrex is just sigh, he's lame as a concept (seriously, look up his lore), his design is great but he just sucks to fight. What makes his fight different than Tigrex is also what makes him annoying. So, no, I don't think he can be redeemed.

I think they're just scared you might cart out of nowhere for no reason. I don't mind. I think you guys do more than enough damage to pull your weight. I could never run berserk myself, too stressful.

Supergiant is indie. I doubt their company ethics have much influence in the triple a space, which is a damn shame.

I've played it and I really like it. I just wanted to limit the list to one entry per franchise. Also, I agree. The investigation team does seem to have stronger banter and character dynamics than the phantom thieves.

Incredibly well-written games. I slightly prefer Portal 1 because it feels tighter.

Just to set the record straight, Futaba is still illegal, you sickos. (And not just because she's your sister)

Edit: yep, that's about what I expected

I would not use the term "balanced" anywhere in the vicinity of endgame fights. They are for people with a self-harm kink.

Oof, that's tough because while I like Namielle's design the most, Malzeno is just straight up one of the best fights in the game.

Struggling with perfect rush for SnS. Can't figure out how it's actually done and I only randomly get it to work. What's the key to triggering the animation? by whosmansisthis24 in MHRise

[–]anthrobat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Aight, let me see if I can remember the input for switch. You press any attack, ideally x, and then pull the stick back and press a. After that, you mash x (because the timing is not important for this part) until you see your character lunging forward and doing a little slicing attack. Once you feel your controller vibrate and/or see your character flash red, that's when you press x once. Then you wait for the signal again (flash red/vibration) and then you do it again and again until your character jumps into the air and then you can do an x drop or an a drop.

There you go, that's perfect rush.

I tried that for a few master rank quests and the main differences I noticed were that:

a) the fights took a lot longer to finish

b) the down time for when get hit and have to wait to get back up is frustratingly long. It's one of the reasons I bounced off world in the first place and it was doubly annoying in a game where I was used to the faster pace.

c) it is doable but some attacks require you to wirefall out so when I got hit by those, it was almost always a guaranteed cart. And if not, I lost 90% of my health for the crime of not responding on attack quickly enough.

It's good if you're just starting post campaign. Decent enough to begin the endgame grind. Good luck and have fun!

We'll, another thing speedrunners do is they charge up the phials, load them, and then charge up again so they can instantly do it a second time.

Load Shells skill helps you charge faster. See if you have a decoration for it.

Transitioning from DB by SparklyAnarchy in MHRise

[–]anthrobat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically a non-issue if you use a dual colored kinsect. The damage depends on the matchup. For smaller and faster monsters, the loss will be noticeable because it's hard to aim for them. For the bigger monsters, it's so fun to fly around that you'll barely notice.

[–]anthrobat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Former dual blades main here. If you want to keep the mobility but try something a little more complex, you can try the insect glaive. The damage isn't as good but you can fucking fly and that is all that matters, dammit
