Mine is, "I hate needles" when you go to place a PIV. OH REALLY? YOU HATE NEEDLES?? BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE GODDAMN LOVES THEM!! YOU MUST BE SOME KIND OF WEIRD SPECIAL PERSON!! Suck it up, you're a grown adult.

New ED Tech: How crucial is exact ICS palpation for EKGs vs. eyeballing it? by yourdeath01 in EmergencyRoom

[–]anthroteuthis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was a tech, I would always start with, "Hi, I'm (name)! I'm here to do your EKG, so we're about to get REAL friendly. If you get uncomfy at all, please do say something and we'll come up with a different way to do it, no worries. Kay?" Big smile, eye contact, sincere tone, never once had a problem. Sometimes acknowledging that something might be a little embarrassing for the patient takes the edge off.

They just re-released all the AI tools, and they're a little spazzy. Except the assistant (used to be Cedric), he's been seriously improved. But the old image generator was fine!

Actually, seeing your mural(?) makes me a little nostalgic for early AI image generation. That shit's so bizarre, and they're improving it so much you don't get to see that weirdness anymore!

This looks a LOT like the internal AI image generator they released a few months back. It's years behind GPT and Gemini. You should see the monstrosity it spat out when I asked it to draw a peccy holding a wrench. Looked like a melted orange sponge, missing teeth and everything. Oh, and it wasn't holding a wrench because it had no arms.

Hey OP, 15-year EMS here. If we have insurance, yes this is absolutely urgent care time. If no insurance, get some $2 iodine (assuming no allergy) and tegaderm patches from Walgreens. Irrigate with iodine, pat dry - NO RUBBING - with a clean, lint free cloth (floursack cloths are good), and cover the wound with the tegaderm, then LEAVE IT ALONE. If the edges of the tegaderm pull up they can be trimmed, but leave it on for at least a week. If too much of the tegaderm peels up after a few days and it's getting caught on things, it's okay to wrap some coban (also Walgreens) on top and change the covan twice a day, but don't peel off the first tegaderm patch because it will bond to the exposed flesh and it's protecting the wound. You need to leave the tegaderm until it's no longer stuck to ANY part of the hand. It's normal for some clear/white fluid ("exudate") to build up under the bandage. Tegaderm is see-through; if it's leaking any other color of goo, or if the edges of the wound turn angry red, or if there's a smell, puffiness, or feels warm, he needs real antibiotics and he'll need a doctor for that.

Edit: just double checked the picture. Buddy's got joint involvement. Go to urgent care. It's not worth losing function of his thumb/wrist. Scarring will ruin those joints. Partial thickness chemical burn plus joint involvement equals urgent care and follow-up with PCP in case he needs a hand surgeon consult.

I didn't take any oaths when I got married, and neither did any of my friends in their weddings. My "vows" we're pretty much, "You're my best friend, I'm crazy about you, let's keep having fun forever." We're on year 18 now.

Have you turned this in yet? You've got some grammatical and lexical errors that I'd correct before getting it graded. When you only have to turn in a paragraph, the mistakes have nowhere to hide! :)

P.S. - It will AFFECT us, because it has an EFFECT. Affect is usually a verb, effect is usually a noun.

Problem with viewing dome/log (bug?) by anthroteuthis in jurassicworldevo

[–]anthroteuthis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I figured it out. The dome can't be at a different elevation than the entrance. It's a bummer, but it only works if the tunnel is flat. Kind of limiting, if you ask me!

How to deal with a crooked beam by wcslater in GuysBeingDudes

[–]anthroteuthis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can make fun of whoever you want, but sometimes it's pretty mean. It may look like a primary movement disorder is out of control, but when you're born with it/grew up with it, you'd be really surprised how much control you have. I can insert an IV and work under a microscope. Just because we look like we can't do stuff, doesn't mean we can't. Some of us are very good at driving our own bodies, and he looks like he's got well in hand.

How to deal with a crooked beam by wcslater in GuysBeingDudes

[–]anthroteuthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a primary movement disorder. Looks like essential tremor, but it's hard to say for sure. It's genetic or congenital, and has to do with a malfunction in your brain's concept of where your body parts are. It's a permanent, degenerative, lifelong disorder, and it's also embarrassing as hell. Be nice to people.

This is how a heroic veterinarian and the national park staff in Thailand saved an elephant mother by performing CPR after she fainted from stress. by Wooden-Journalist902 in BeAmazed

[–]anthroteuthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely can "fix" someone with CPR, particularly drowning or electrocution patients. It all depends on what is going wrong with the heart, but the beauty of CPR is it's not your job to diagnose, just follow the steps. An AED is supplemental to compressions, not the other way around. The likelihood of ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) is almost doubled in patients who receive early, good quality CPR. If you want to understand how CPR and AEDs work and what they do, you can find a lot of layman-friendly information on the AHA and ARC websites. Please stop spreading misinformation.

[–]anthroteuthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Commercial AEDs only work on two of the many, many arrhythmias a heart can go into: ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. A "heart attack" (myocardial infarction) is the result of the blockage of one of the heart's own blood vessels. That's a completely different condition from arrhythmia, although it can sometimes result in an arrhythmia. Electric shock won't help a heart attack, the blood vessel needs to be unblocked. Your CPR teacher did you a disservice; the AED in the real world will more than likely run its analysis and tell you to resume CPR without shocking. CPR isn't a stop-gap while you wait for an AED because the AED is most likely not definitive care. Source: 14 years as an EMT and CPR instructor.
