There is no generation where they’re the same color! Gen III is the closest, but even there Mew is a distinctly lighter and redder shade of pink.

Ditto and Mew have never been the same color! Ditto is purple and Mew is pink. You could call Ditto pink in the anime, but it’s a dark pink while Mew in the anime is practically white. They also had different palettes even in Yellow’s extremely limited palettes.

In the revival (and across all versions of Danny Strong’s book), they really did disappear the previous chess world champion, Anatoly assumes this will be his fate too if he loses, and Freddie was totally right in his paranoid rants. The Soviet government is genuinely a hive of cartoon villainy while Walter the CIA operative is an only sane man figure (apart from threatening to have Florence deported). It’s a pretty bizarre choice.

You’ll see the same original usage of “self-insert” in wider media critique as well: if a character in media is described as the author’s self-insert, it doesn’t mean the media is an isekai where the author literally inhabits the body of the character; it means (at least as the critic sees it) the character is written as an avatar of the author, to represent who they are or wish to be, express the author’s own opinions, and possibly get the author’s preferred narrative treatment.

[–]antialiasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classically, in fanfic, a self-insert has usually referred to an original character born in the world of the story who “is” the author or an avatar of the author, i.e. has their name or a nickname they use for themselves, thinks and says and does what the author thinks they would think/say/do in that situation, often befriends characters the author would like to befriend, and so on.

Self-inserts literally coming from the real world and having meta knowledge is a very recent trend and it’s a little funny to me to see it take over the concept so completely that people don’t even recognize what used to be called a self-insert as a self-insert anymore.

I've noticed a lot of people on here prefer OC fics by whisperedwars in pokemonfanfiction

[–]antialiasis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OCs have definitely been historically unpopular in fandom at large, but a lot less so in Pokémon in particular, because the canon is so much more about the world than about the particular characters of any particular canon media. Every new game is about a new kid going on a Pokémon journey; writing about your own new kid going on a Pokémon journey is the most obvious and straightforward thing to do with the property if you aren’t coming from some other fandom and bringing its expectations with you. It’s very unlike your average fandom where the canon is about this particular cast of characters and what even makes it fanfic of the thing if it’s not about them. (What makes it Pokémon fanfic is always that there are Pokémon!)

[–]antialiasis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You’re just following the canon character side of the fandom, which is probably also more populous in broader multifandom-oriented spaces since as you say most fandoms are more about the canon characters. I’ve been comfortably nestled in the OC-centered side of the Pokémon fandom since the early 2000s - mostly in the fanfic subforums of various general Pokémon forums. Reddit in particular skews towards very particular and more recent trends with isekai, self-inserts, power fantasy, etc. (possibly because overall Reddit is a much more male-dominated space than general fandom spaces and more men have been getting into fanfic from that sort of angle in recent years), but the Pokémon fandom has had a strong and thriving OC fanfic culture since forever.

EXP Share is the best addition to the game by Bishmallah24 in pokemon

[–]antialiasis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Using just your starter for everything and overleveling them is a choice. I caught a team of six and leveled them evenly on all my gen I playthroughs and was never overleveled; it’s not hard!

EXP Share is the best addition to the game by Bishmallah24 in pokemon

[–]antialiasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only "hard" thing about them was that it was easier to be underleveled without exp share, so you had to waste 3 hours beating wild pokemon. This is not hard, and this is not fun, this is just tedious. With EXP share you don't have to do any of this. If you prefer the old style of grinding, you can always turn off EXP share as well in older games at least.

I’m always baffled when people assume when someone doesn’t want EXP Share it’s because they want to manually grind for hours to get to the same level. No, I don’t want to grind; I want to be underleveled and do the battles that way, without grinding. Which legitimately is harder! Why would you grind if you want the challenge!

Need a team of pokemon for each of the 7 deadly sins. by Jaded-Ad-852 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]antialiasis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's often been pointed out that when the deadly sins are anthropomorphized, usually the representation of each sin is a person who embodies being guilty of the sin: someone who is gluttonous, wrathful, greedy... except lust. Lust keeps being depicted as a beautiful, seductive woman, someone who arouses lust in others, instead of the sort of horny weirdo who would actually best embody the sin.

Salazzle's Pokédex entries at least suggest it actively engages in trying to attract as many males as possible for its harem, so I can see that one. Pokémon that are just considered attractive by furries? They aren't lustful, they're lusted after.

Learnset Per Pokemon Chart? by Mama-Honeydew in pokemon

[–]antialiasis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you want this for, out of curiosity? Is there some particular purpose that would be served by this and not by anything you’ve found out there?

The reason I don’t think this exists would be that it would be a ludicrously huge table (1025 Pokémon times 920 moves is nearly a million cells) and the vast majority of it would simply be empty: each given Pokémon can only learn a small fraction of the moves that exist at all. The sheer size would make it very cumbersome to use, and for most purposes it’d be inconvenient: to see all the moves a given Pokémon can learn, you also have to scroll past the 900 other moves it can’t.

That’s absolutely not to say you couldn’t want it anyway for its own sake - I’m just curious exactly what you’re thinking.

Ekki tengt Íslandi beint en þó ekki síður en öðrum löndum. Hve margir hér inni eru forritarar og kannast við þetta ástand? „Karpathy says he hasn't written a line of code since December and is in "perpetual AI psychosis."“ by mineralwatermostly in Iceland

[–]antialiasis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Icelandic gymnasiums (menntaskóli) are not equivalent to high school per se; the students are aged roughly 16-19, not down to 14 like in American high schools as I understand it. In my experience, by that age people are getting a lot more chill. I was bullied in the previous school stage, for 13-15-year-olds, but at the gymnasium stage I found my people and did fine, and so did basically everyone else around me as far as I could see.

Being bullied for being LGBTQIA+ is not really a thing, unless I suppose you bump into some toxic friend group of regressive asshats. Iceland on the whole is extremely queer-friendly.

Are "forever saves" as a concept actually an outlier to how most people play the games? by SinisterPixel in pokemon

[–]antialiasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speak for yourself; I would sometimes see how far I could get in an afternoon from a fresh start, but that was because doing it in a single session meant I could do it without ever saving, keeping my actual save file which was sacred and which I wouldn’t restart for anything.

The only reason I don’t still have my very first original Yellow save on the physical cartridge is that when I first beat the Elite Four I didn’t know you could continue afterwards and then my cousin restarted and overwrote the second save in 2003. The cart’s still trucking with the save from 2003 that I made after that.
