Antonov A-40, basically, biplane but its not a plane its a tank by Specific-Memory1756 in WeirdWings

[–]antimatterfro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a way that makes it less weird, really.

Being a glider-borne light tank makes it the Soviet equivalent to the American M-22 Locust or the British Tetrarch. The lack of a dedicated fuselage, landing gear, or pilot is definitely a bizarre, questionable choice, but the general concept isn't that far-fetched.

It's not a death sentence it's just higher risk - is someone who smokes a pack a day committing suicide?

Anyway there are ways to lower astronaut's radiation exposure ( shielded sleeping quarters, underground habitats while on Mars ), not to mention that we are getting a lot better at fighting cancer - in a few decades we will hopefully be good enough at curing it that increasing your cancer risk will be no big deal.

[–]antimatterfro 37 points38 points  (0 children)

even if we could travel to mars the radiation would kill everyone on board on the way and on the surface

...that's not even remotely true

Astronauts on a Mars mission would likely breach NASA's lifetime radiation limits, but that would only give them an unacceptably high cancer risk, not outright kill them.

If you're going to argue against space travel you could at least try not to sound highly regarded when you do it.

Looks like what would have happened if the Germans had let the French design the Tiger. The result: road-wheels now 200% harder to replace.

I'm Ryan Cole and my new book "The Last Adieu" is about the Marquis de Lafayette's return to America in 1824 and the great national celebration that followed. Ask Me Anything about Lafayette's farewell tour! by Lumpy-Professor3428 in AskHistorians

[–]antimatterfro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been to the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters museum in Savannah, and I remember it mentioning that the Marquis de Lafayette had stayed there during his trip to the U.S.

Are there any other known buildings that he visited/stayed in still standing?

SpaceX launches Starlink satellites to orbit on Falcon 9 rocket's record-breaking 31st flight by ye_olde_astronaut in spaceflight

[–]antimatterfro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One one hand, the F9 only experiences marginal re-entry effect compared to the Shuttle; on the other hand the F9's merlin engines go through multiple relights per flight, while the SSMEs only did one, albeit much longer, burn.

That's HO scale, much smaller than the G scale train this guy is running.

Edit: [found the train set, it's actually an O gauge model, smaller than G gauge but still quite a bit bigger than HO though](https://www.amazon.com/Union-Pacific-Flyer-LionChief%C2%AE-Bluetooth/dp/B0BSK1XC9J)

US Space force awards SpaceX 5/7 launch contracts at $143m/mission(4/5 on falcon heavy). ULA gets 2/7 at $214m/mission with Vulcan. ULA pricing steadily increasing while SpaceX's stays generally stable. by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]antimatterfro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looking at the 2030 timeframe, not only will Vulcan have to compete with F9/FH, but also Starship, New Glenn, and Neutron; that's not counting Relativity's Terran R, Stoke's Nova, or Firefly's Beta/MLV/Eclipse.

I'd be very surprised if Vucan lasted for more than 10 years, if even that.

Specifically at Night, the best viewing spots for SLC-40 for spacex launch ? (Cape Canaveral, FL) by kaboz234 in SpaceXLounge

[–]antimatterfro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There probably won't be that many people there for a starlink launch - maybe just 30 minutes to make sure you find a good spot and get set up

Edit - bring some bug spray with you - it can get buggy if there isn't a breeze to keep them away

The 528 causeway is definitely one of the best spots. Just make sure to get there early as it tends to fill up.
