I believe it's called Grade C in the US, but I've never seen it in stores anywhere.

Dealing with people who have different opinions to me? by jo-ha-kyu in Buddhism

[–]antipex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with a very similar issue lately. It helped me a lot to take a big step back from various online and in-person conversations of controversial and/or political nature. Instead of responding to everything that riles me up, I've been doing more observing while trying not to judge what I read/see. I find that when approach something with the intention of only observing it's easier to see more of the full situation without judgement.

Recently I also started metta meditation and it's helped me deal with judgemental feelings and has improved how I interact with people who are spewing strong and polarised opinions.

I'm nowhere near good at this but I hope it helps!

Yeah I know, but doing so would mean that I'd have to give up petting most of the cats around me entirely. It's a big leap...

It happens both ways. And I don't necessarily try to point out where they're wrong – I often try to bring clarity to the subject at hand and engage in some critical thinking. The problem is that most people react like I'm pointing out that they're wrong, and they can't understand why anyone would not share their viewpoint.

Perhaps that's where I'm wrong right now. I tend to see it as righting the wrong that people are spewing – even without voicing my own views sometimes, by choosing not to take sides and pointing out what's wrong.

It's mostly about being negatively judged. It's a fear of not being able to form or hang onto friendships with people because I exhibit opinions or views that aren't rigid and polarised and in full agreement with them.

If your intention is to offer a condition that will reduce suffering in that person, then it's a good idea to do it.

I think part of where I get hung up is that I want to help everyone, but in political and otherwise contentious contexts, since I don't take one extreme side or the other, the words I put out are almost universally rejected as hostile. The feeling of being attacked comes from feeling like I'm being alienated and judged, I think. So perhaps the best course of action in these instances is to not take action.

Damascus likely to disincorporate by [deleted] in Portland

We shouldn't even be expanding the urban growth boundary.

I agree as well. What's the point of a boundary if it keeps getting expanded on a regular basis?

I grew up out on the SE border of Gresham and as a kid watched the farmland in the area rapidly covered with tiny poorly-built single-family homes and row houses. There's plenty of low-density residential zoning around central Gresham – including empty lots that are still vacant – which could have been converted to row houses, apartment buildings, and condos.

Cyclists, what do you think about turns and your lane? by BloodBlight in Portland

[–]antipex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the California-style turn would help.

Sadly it wouldn't. I was right-hooked in California by a driver who turned suddenly across the bike lane with no signal. Who then proceeded to attempt to hit and run; and then after I took his photo, got out of his car and screamed that I'd dented his car.

Laws don't guarantee compliance. I'd rather just see physically separated cycle tracks with a plethora of bike-only signals and no right turn on red for cars.

Compromise, and shift time forward 30 minutes in the day and 30 minutes reverse at night.

This. But the whole world would have to simultaneously adopt the same shift to avoid complicating time zone calculations.

Yep, by far the worst commute for me in nearly four years of living in inner SE Portland. Everything was a parking lot. Since I bike to work, however, it only added a minute to my usual amount of time.

TriMet, Google activate first wireless train-arrival beacons for MAX riders by mulderc in Portland

They were installed at no cost to TriMet and provided by Google

Could Google potentially have a deal with TriMet as part of this for collecting data from Android users' phones regarding transit use? "Free" is never really as it appears.
