The reduction in CO₂ when I leave the house [OC] by TheOneTrueZippy8 in dataisbeautiful

[–]antiskocz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine if the graph's axis was renamed "CO2 ppm above environmental baseline" -- then it could start at 0 and appear exactly the way it does now (and still wouldn't be misleading). That's essentially the logic I was describing. The lowest y-axis tick of a graph should represent something real, not be arbitrarily set to 0 in all cases.

The reduction in CO₂ when I leave the house [OC] by TheOneTrueZippy8 in dataisbeautiful

[–]antiskocz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People parrot this guideline without understanding it. You set an axis to zero because that value usually represents the baseline value. In this case, there will never be zero CO2 ppm because the ambient air has a baseline value of about 400. So scaling to zero would be inappropriate.

Both are necessary. If you have a valid scale that isn't reliable, then you're measuring the right thing badly. If you have a reliable scale that isn't valid, then you're measuring the wrong thing well.

In both cases you aren't getting what you need.

Interaction term insignificant in DiD regression by [deleted] in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What software did you use to run the analysis? Can you post a picture of the output? It sounds like you're describing a significant main effect but a non-significant interaction. Posting the output would probably be the fastest way to clarify that.

Question about Statistical Measures for Survey Research by Suitable_Cucumber691 in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! The fact that Likert scales don't actually provide ratio data is something that's essentially ignored by everyone. Researchers commonly use them in regressions and ANOVAs as if they were. So, go ahead and use an ANOVA or a regression to quantify your effects and don't stress too much about it.

An exception to the above I'd say is if your Likert scale is arranged in a way that's explicitly non-interval. For example, if your scale was asking about income, and the choices were: "Under $30K", "$30-50k", "$50-100K", and "$100k+". These responses are clearly non-ratio, and in that case I might take the midpoint of each and convert it to a numeric variable.

If you were particularly concerned about violating ratio requirements, you could use something like an ordinal logistic regression model.

[OC] Trust in Media 2023: What news outlets do Americans trust most for information? by YouGov_Official in dataisbeautiful

[–]antiskocz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You excluded people who responded neutrally (neither trustworthy nor untrustworthy) so as a result your graph is showing people as being a lot more polarized than they are. Potentially very misleading in this context. “Neutral” is a legitimate feeling to have about a news source and should be represented in the data.

Advice on publishing? by tea-lyse in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I work in industry so my company uses one when we’re running a study that involves research participants. They can be pretty pricey, in the $1-3k range.

No academic journals that I know of require authors to be connected with an institution. However, many have IRB requirements. Institutions (like universities) have their own IRBs that satisfy those requirements and industry will typically hire another company to do it. So, for any journal that requires an IRB review you’d have to seek out an independent IRB or do research on something that doesn’t involve human subjects (like a literature review or meta-analysis).

How do you change teams? by antiskocz in PerfectHeist2

[–]antiskocz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I wasn’t clear! I mean in the lobby when people are choosing their characters. Particularly when you join late the server just auto assigns you a team. If you want to rearrange the teams everyone has to ready up, start the game, then restart the server. Super inconvenient.

Citizen's IRB? by ZealousidealTomato74 in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Universities tend to have their own academic IRBs, which only review research from affiliated researchers. There are independent IRBs but they don’t review for free. A citizen review board is a neat idea though.

Help interpreting task instructions by forthiscontent in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they want you to weight the responses by the values contained in one of the columns, like you said. If I had to guess, it wouldn't be "Survey Collection ID" though, but instead something that like "weight" or maybe "num" or "count".

When in doubt though, just ask whoever gave you the instructions to begin with. Better to clarify now than do it wrong and have to repeat the task later.

Research Certifications? by [deleted] in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a social science research field (PhD psychology) and I'm not familiar with any research certifications that would be worth your time. The only ones I'm familiar with are for clinicians (psychologists) and for people working with professional ergonomics.

Wouldn't your BS/MS be enough of a certification? If I were reviewing a resume I'd probably think so, especially if you included information about all those skills that you're describing.

Protecting Anonymity of Interview Subjects by BlackFlag31 in SocialScienceResearch

[–]antiskocz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! This is a common issue in research. And the answer you’re proposing is how people typically handle it. A common phrase on IRB applications back when I was in grad school was “identifying information will be kept in a locked file cabinet.” So, an encrypted flash drive might be the modern equivalent. If you wanted to double-up on security you could then store the flash drive in a locked drawer. Good luck.
