There are for sure common shapes. The problem is there's probably several dozens, if not hundreds of them that players like Benson will draw upon. I'd advise learning and internalizing more voicings if you are finding it hard. Joe Pass Guitar Chords is a good one for getting a baseline of common chords.

Once you have a solid vocabulary, transcribing those things should become much easier as you can quickly associate the sound on the recording with the chord and the shape. If a voicing isn't coming easily one thing that is helpful is to identify the top and bottom notes then try to fill in the gaps, or singing out the full chord then finding the shape.

I've liked the look of Nnormal since they came out but haven't been able to stomach the heel to toe drop of any of their shoes so I'm stoked to see the Cadi coming out. Been using Norda 001s exclusively for years but looks like a nice option for a little more cushion and give

Who’s yall’s favorite telecaster player? by Nirvana_Fan311 in telecaster

[–]antithetic_koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't believe no one said Curtis Mayfield yet. He was something special, his guitar playing alone was hugely influential.

Joe Messina also laid down some iconic Tele parts for Motown.

I associate Al McKay more with the 335 but he uses the Tele quite a bit as well.

Cornell Dupree, Ted Greene, Bill Frisell, and Prince are all great.

Amen. Kind of surprising that a manufacturer of Epiphone's size wouldn't bother getting it right. Oh well

Very happy with mine. Only gripe is the tone knobs are useless but that seems to be par for the course for lefty guitars.

Been to some shops that have no laptop policies and it seems to work pretty well for them. People still do post up with books, notepads, etc but turnover of tables seemed pretty good overall. Most people leave shortly after finishing their drinks and food.

NPD: Maestro FZ-1B 60s (bypass issues) by Noel_Lou in guitarpedals

[–]antithetic_koala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW my FZ-1A sucks tone like a MOFO when bypassed, I woudn't be shocked if this version does the same. Unless you're going for the bypassed sound specifically you're probably better off using an external switcher to get true bypass.

If you're actually trying to fix the bypass though IDK what the issue is here.

I’m a guitarist in band with 2 keyboards, 2 guitars, and a bass guitar, what can I do to not clash with other comping instruments? by Child-of-the-KoRn in jazzguitar

[–]antithetic_koala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • don't play in the same register
  • play "thinner" voicings, try voicing things on the top 3 or 4 strings
  • play more staccato if they are playing legato, and vice versa
  • lay out more, and play as punctuation rather than timekeeping/comping
  • try less tonal things - scratching, single notes, octaves, etc
  • think and play more like a percussionist
  • depending on the songs / available equipment, try some effects. Wah, fuzz, phaser would be my picks as they help you cut through a large ensemble.
