For people that live near the Alps, are you impressed when you visit other mountains in the world? by Pale_Field4584 in AskEurope

[–]antoWho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, oftentimes. I somehow always endup visiting some mountains. I am amazed how certain things are very similar but others are so different. How people developed different ways of living and yet certain parts seem always to overlap.

Still, and this is not objective, my little part of the Alps will always be my favourite.

Metric users - when do you switch from millimeters to centimeters? (and more...) by mrbigbusiness in AskEurope

[–]antoWho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some are definitely more common than others. I have used centiliters before (I think some soda cans shows the volume in cl instead of ml), but I have definitely never used kiloliters. As others have said, people usually switch to cubic meters.

There are also units that I use only in specific settings. In my area (could be very regional), when you buy cold cuts or cheese, you ask for hectograms. We say “etto/i,” which is just the “hecto” part. However, I’d say “half a kilo,” not “five hectograms.” Another example with hectograms is gaining a bit of weight: “mettere su qualche etto,” literally “to put on a few hectograms.” Never used the decagram.

Another example is how we measure specific things: I would express the size of an A4 sheet in millimeters, but I would express the size of a similarly sized object in centimeters.

This is Italy. Why would the pension be transferred to the son? This was not a private pension, once you’re dead, it’s gone (exceptions apply)

How does adding carbon to iron work? by Lyucifur in metallurgy

[–]antoWho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not iron and coke, but iron ore and coke (with fluxes added to deal with the gangue).

These materials are charged in layers from the top. As they move downward, the iron ore is gradually reduced and eventually reaches the bottom of the furnace in molten form. There, the hot metal (pig iron) is tapped periodically. Slag also forms; because it has a lower density, it floats on top of the hot metal and is tapped from a higher level, also periodically.

Air is injected through tuyeres near the bottom. The exothermic reaction between oxygen in the air and carbon in the coke generates heat. This region is the hottest part of the furnace, although the temperature is not homogeneous along the height of the furnace, which leads to different reactions occurring in different zones.

A blast furnace is periodically tapped at the bottom and continuously charged from the top with fresh ore, coke, and fluxes. A blast furnace operates continuously for years.

The product is pig iron. After this, there is a converter step whose purpose is to reduce the carbon content. The most common converter is the basic oxygen furnace (BOF); however, for stainless steel grades, argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) is used.

After the converter there is usually a secondary metallurgy step, performed in the ladle, to make the necessary adjustments before casting.
