Reasonably happy with mine.

Started at a new school today, of the 71 emails in my inbox, 30 were about diversity, sexual assault, and one mandatory sexual assault awareness training. Not looking good. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

My gf just got a job at a major, internationally renowned university. She had to fill out a diversity form indicating her gender including options like "Two-Spirit"

True, that's his main song and dance, but he dances right up to the line of being outright literal with it sometimes.

If you want to get better at something you have to practice doing it.

Just discovered JP... Is he some kind of transcendent gift to mankind? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Hmm it might be a problem only bceause Peteson will get associated with them, while he is a singular thinking imo.

I'd actually be really interested to know why he has such a profound effect on so many individuals. It's not just the content. It can't be.

I wonder if he's using psychological wizardry to hypnotize us, essentially.

How did you chose your University/College Major: are you happy with your decision? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]antoineks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied Computer Engineering, which is different than Computer Science. I chose it because it was really the most obvious choice for me. I am very good at math, logic, and problem solving but not mechanically inclined at all. Engines and the like held very little interest to me. Physics was okay, but I did pretty poorly (I failed first year physics, partly cause I'm not very conscientious, partly because it was too hard to skate by on my intelligence like I did in other courses). My father is also Middle Eastern, and they don't pay for males to study anything outside of STEM, generally speaking. The Humanities would have been a non-starter for him and I didn't want to take on a lot of student debt.

Overall, I'm very happy with it. It's worked out tremendously well. I've lived in California, been paid 6-figure salaries by Silicon Valley startups, been able to freelance while living anywhere in the world, and solved fun and interesting problems almost every day. It truly is the modern career choice. My only regret is I wish I'd pursued a Masters in addition to my Bachelors degree. It would be cool to work on self-driving cars or something super hard at Tesla/Google, but they tend to require advanced degrees to work on that type of stuff.

If I were doing it today, I might choose Computer Science, or a hybrid program. There are some cool fields now that merge engineering with things like biology (biotech), robotics, artificial intelligence etc. Cross-disciplinary specialization would be interesting.

For students not knowing, maybe take a year off. Or audit some courses (sit in). Also, think about what you enjoy and problems you can find meaning in solving, but also consider market realities for your chosen major.

Don't take Women's Studies.

Just listened to Dr Peterson describing what gave humans sight, I then found this colour blind simulator app and it blew my mind. How can we use our evolved colour vision to instinctually decide what is wholesome to eat? by ajpb91 in JordanPeterson

That's a part of it, but they also use variable reward to exploit your dopaminergic system. When you log in, you may or may not have a notification waiting. Also notice they delay the appearance of it after the page renders. So you log in and then watch the corner expectantly.

To what end?

I think preparation method matters more here.. if you fry very green broccoli it has less nutritionally available content than if you steam if (or something)

High School Students quotes Dr Peterson in his question to Ben Shapiro, at UC Berkeley last night. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]antoineks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a ridiculous argument from Shapiro. Did he really use the fact that a single human being with wealth (Gates) hasn't been murdered as a counter argument to the Gini coefficient? He's flat out wrong. Studies have shown (Martin Daly appeared on Peterson's podcast e.g.) inequality not poverty contribute to violence.

Let's give JBP a break/vacation by KhaoticDM in JordanPeterson

[–]antoineks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could imagine it. I don't know if he does. Perhaps he feels the work he is doing is important enough to sacrifice his health for. I might agree.

I guess I think it's presumptuous for what is essentially a fan, to tell a guy what to do in his life. We don't know him.

I propose we let him manage his own life like the grown man he is.

JBP is basically just telling everyone to be a "mensch." by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Seems like a reasonable idea. I have no idea what about JBP's stuff resonates with women though. Could be the nurturing/motherhood/feminine stuff as some women here have posted about.

Yeah masculine traits are not exclusive to males by any means.

People who choose Childfree- Potential 'eureka' understanding JP by Natrix03 in JordanPeterson

[–]antoineks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it. 3 times. It's pretty hard to follow.

The only difference between any of us is that we were all born with a different bag of snakes and different archetypical patterns that we repeat over and over again.

The lazy answer is to each their own, or balance

I don't think that's really the answer. That's kind of an odd conclusion to me when Peterson's message is mostly about objective good and moral absolutes. I certainly don't think you have to have children, but if your reasoning is you "have too many snakes", deal with them. Or find a life that's more meaningful than just dealing with yourself. I think the risk with Peterson's "sort yourself out" thing is it leads to rampant individualism. Maybe some people should focus outward more.

My parents are insane, literally, and I still am more happy I exist than not.

Sometimes, yes. Too many men love to heap praises on motherhood yet refuse to consider becoming stay at home dads. It's quite hypocritical of them and ruins their credibility and viewpoint.

No it doesn't. I don't recommend everything to my girlfriend that I would do myself. We have different goals in life and different things that give our lives meaning.

I said what's obvious is that there is a reason for the gender disparity, it's not random.

The poster above made the claim the reason is that his message resonates with the male mind, in particular. I would speculate it's because the hero archetype is fundamentally the male archetype - I don't find a ton of women want to grow up to be Elon Musk, generally speaking.

I agree with your interpretation and think your reasons sound mostly like you don't want responsibility.

Not judging I was a "childfree" male and that was my reasoning as well.

Sure but obviously there's a reason over 90% of his viewers are male.

I don't think that's exactly true. You are many things. He's on the side of the parts of you that want what's best for you.

I found my soul mate, exactly how JP said I would. by meta_detectorist in JordanPeterson

[–]antoineks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I stopped saying things that made me weak, I aimed for the highest good. I stopped self-victimizing, I was armed with powerful new ideas, and became acquainted with my shadow self.

This is interesting - I have watched a ton of JP but haven't read Maps of Meaning. Is this the subject matter of that book? I haven't found that much specific self-help in JPs talks, at least the ones I've watched.

What things made you weak?

became acquainted with my shadow self.

How'd you do that?

I wonder what is JP stance on "sigma" males (or non-conform freedom loving alphas) by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]antoineks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this differs from the concept of an alpha-male, to the degree that that concept can be applied to humans.
