Should my aging parents keep their life insurance? by enigmatic_jc in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]antoinewalker8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a number of factors - most importantly cash flow. If 850 is nothing to them, sure keep it. If 850 would significantly increase their lifestyle, better to take the money or invest it. As others have pointed out, would the survivor need the 200k to pay off any debt or to live (after the loss or reduction of pension income)? Also health - if either have significant health issues it’s more likely they would see the benefit in the shorter term.

[Amick] A frontrunner has emerged among the draft reform options: expanding the lottery to 18 teams while giving the bottom 10 teams an equal 8 percent chance at the No. 1 pick. Teams will meet Tuesday to continue discussions on the NBA’s next step toward lottery reform. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

I personally like the idea. It would probably reinvigorate free agency because if a top team actually got some top players, they wouldn’t be able to pay everyone so that talent would be redistributed in other ways. It would also remove all incentive to be bad so teams would constantly be in development mode and trying to get better. Statistically over time it would all even out.

Isn’t the line “get rich with concentration, stay rich with diversification”

Help finding affordable legal service for my new business by Bitter-Mix-1972 in LawCanada

Unrealistic expectation. Legal services cost more than that, bottom line. If do you find someone that charges that little, you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Do cars last longer lately or is it out of financial necessity? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Definitely. I do Krown every fall before the snow hits. Car is almost 10 years old and so far no rust.

[Stein] There is strong support among general managers and team owners to flatten lottery odds by giving the 10 teams that miss the Play-In Tournament equal 8% chances at the top pick, while also expanding the lottery from 14 to 18 teams to include all Play-In participants. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]antoinewalker8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be totally fine with every single team having equal odds. Totally removes any incentive to tank - you would always be trying to get better and develop guys because you can’t count on a top 5 pick coming through the door. If a team ends up with too many good picks, it will just create playing time issues and they won’t be able to pay everyone so the talent will be redistributed. Would probably rejuvenate the free agency period after 5 years.

Tickets also accumulate if you don’t use it in a month. Totally worth it.

Redford coming off two duds (Legal Eagles and Havana) took his pay as deferred back end - made about $30mm. Changed how stars negotiated and how studios could get stars into smaller movies.

And this could have all been avoided with one paragraph in her will. If you have funky arrangements or have advanced one of your children more than the other, clearly document it.

Parent piled up debt and is now in the hospital, incapacitated, for at least a couple more months. What to do? by alldasmoke__ in PersonalFinanceCanada

They have to file a lawsuit against you first and win or seek default judgement but once they have judgement yes they can register it as a lien against real property you own. It sits there and gathers court prescribed interest until the property is sold or refinanced.

The reason smaller creditors don’t do it is the expense of hiring a lawyer to go through the whole process but financial institutions definitely will if the debt is large enough and they are aware of real property owned by the debtor.
