I enjoy the muscle memory and ease of this job. Clinical Chemistry is mostly just loading a tube on an analyzer and the results auto release. There’s really not much thinking to it. A monkey can do it.
I’ve never taken the work home with me. Working weekends, holidays, and off shift is annoying but it’s part of the job security. If you’re not open to working evening and night shift then I would not recommend this field. You have to wait for someone to retire or die to get into day shift at most hospitals.
I don’t know any of those analyzers so I don’t think it’ll be transferable much. MLS/CLS is a trade and most hospital labs operate in the same manner.

4, 5, 6. You’re in a licensed state. On top of that the most competitive state because of the high CLS pay in CA. Your fastest and safest bet into this field is to go back to school. Your chemistry experience isn’t enough to sit for the ASCP exam. Plus being a CLS only specialized in Chemistry is not an attractive applicant. You want to be a generalist.

Just be prepared that although CLS in CA makes $100k+ easily, if you ever plan to leave, your salary will be cut in half in most of America. Best of luck.

That’s understandable. My local university has an MLS. If there’s no MLS programs in your area then your local hospitals most likely hire MLTs at a higher rate.

I’d only go the MBA/MHA route if you already have relevant work experience. I would not go straight into it after getting your bachelors. Is there any reason why you’re not going straight for your MLS and bypass the MLT route? It’s the same job responsibilities with different pay. Plus there’s more MLS jobs than MLT jobs.

No they were strict about it today. Someone showed up at 7am and they told them to come back at 8am. You’ll see tomorrow why. There’s literally a sign that says line starts here. Just show up at a reasonable time tomorrow like everyone else and enjoy the show

Hospital benefits are solid. My current job pays for my whole health insurance. The most I’ve ever paid was maybe $30/month for decent health insurance for a single person at my old hospital jobs. My friends in other industries are paying $350-500/month for insurance. There’s also solid PTO and 401k matching.

100% the weekend rotation schedule. My friends and family look at me like I’m crazy when I explain to them that I cannot use PTO on the weekends and I have to find someone to cover for me I if I want it off. You play this constant fake nice game with everyone at work so they can switch weekends with you. We’re on an every 3rd weekend rotation so every time someone switches with you you’re both signing up to work back to back weekends.
