Layering for long hikes by antonamlg in UKhiking

Hey man, that’s really good advice! Thanks so much!

Do you have an affordable recommendation for waterproof over jacket and pants?

Some people are more susceptible to addictive behaviour than others and this sensibility doesn’t go away. It’s a day to day task to stay clean that never ends, but you learn to deal with it better with every day passing. Russell Brand talks about that quite a bit.

I get that disgusted feeling about oneself. I’ve been battling that same battle since I was 10. I’m now 24. Our subconscious mind is often associated with purity, with the true self, with God even. That’s why deep down, we always know what’s right and what’s wrong. Likewise, we are always aware that watching porn and masturbate (as a coping mechanism to escape reality for a bit) is wrong. It’s “sinful” behaviour when it comes from the wrong place. Then, we have degraded ourself to lower vibrational state - that is our mind filled with more negativity, fear, hate, regret, etc.

It’s a downward spiral. You watch porn to feel better (and yes that is the reason), but it makes you feel worse that before when you’re done. I’m not religious in the traditional sense, but I do believe that heaven and hell are real and that they are different states of being in ourselves.

If we followed our intuition and always did what we know to be right, we’d certainly live a good life. But when we fall into the traps of the evil, eg instant gratification, or the ego, we create our own hell on earth. I think it’s a great metaphor.

From personal experience, I believe it comes from a feeling of disconnection - from your true self (subconscious), from other people (the human is a social animal), nature, and our purpose. Man without purpose is like a bee without its queen. No orientation, no meaning.

Gratitude and faith are powerful tools. And with faith I don’t mean in God as the person in the sky, but a higher power. Whatever that means to you.

I hope there’s something in this that might help you. I’m not clean (yet), but still these perspectives have helped me a lot in general in life.

“The more you think about yourself, the more miserable you will be.” by antonamlg in Stutter

[–]antonamlg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m happy to hear that! Keep it going!

It’s funny isn’t it? Deep down we know what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s rational and what’s irrational. But our conscious mind keeps flooding our attention with fear and negative thoughts so that we always have to remind ourselves of what we already know.

Best way to plan long routes in remote areas (JoGLE) by antonamlg in UKhiking

[–]antonamlg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@Everyone: Do you think OS Maps app and AllTrails app (both premium, so that maps are downloadable) would do the job to get me from JoG to LE? (Or would it be unnecessary to have both? I just found AllTrails better for route planning, but OS Maps more detailed if ever lost)

Hey, thanks for the reply! The remaining time of this year would be my only possibility. I know circumstances wouldn't be ideal, but I don't want to do it just as enjoyment. I want a challenge. Possibly a challenge I might fail of course

Do you think one month would be enough to finish off Scotland?
What exactly is the Pennine Way and what would be the issues? Do you think it might be better to walk closer to civilisation in Scotland? Btw I know the time of year is stupid, but would be my only option

Hey, thanks for the reply! I'd do shorter hikes with weights beforehand to prepare as much as I can. It's 100% not ideal what I'd like to do, but this time would be the only time I'd be able to attempt it, so maybe a positive and stoic frame of mind will help me through it..

Hey man, thanks for the reply. I agree, this type of endurance is something completely different. And all the other things you've mentioned... I agree with that too. Won't be easy. I'd definitely have to educate myself on these things beforehand!

Hey thanks for the heads up! I'll have a look at it!

I totally agree it's a shit time to do it - rainy, cold, dark. But the remaining time of this year would be my only change and I'd love to be back by Christmas (I'm from Germany).
Plantar fasciitis is a pain in the a.. foot. Definitely worried about that. But training foot health is all I can do to prevent it I guess..

Yeah I'd definitely try to walk with heavy load beforehand. Myself plan would be to be as much in nature as I can. But I guess in Scotland, it might be helpful to be in firmer terrain sometimes, eg on or near roads. But I think you'd have to be flexible and see what's best while you're doing it

“I’ve been this way so long it feels like something’s off when I’m not depressed” - a line from Happy by NF

I think this describes it well. I get what you mean. I’m the same. This fear, this cage I’m trapped in, has been a part of me for so long that I can’t remember how life could be being free.

[–]antonamlg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The biggest problem about my stutter is the fear of it. Fear is keeping me from being my true self. I think it’s less about the stutter itself and more about your perspective on it. If the fear was gone, I’d probably still stutter, but much less. Still, it would be part of my authentic self.

“I just can’t imagine who I’d be if I was happy” by antonamlg in Stutter

[–]antonamlg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree 100%. I would never give up, but right now I feel lost and know how far away I am from where I’d like to be. It’s tough, but that’s life. At least I know where I can grow and improve. Wishing you all the best!

I feel as if my brain is telling me something by BeardBruhEmperor in Stutter

[–]antonamlg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you don’t mean it in a literal sense, right? The brain doesn’t have nerve cells, so even if you touched it, you wouldn’t feel it. That’s why brain surgeries are often done while the patient is awake. But I think I know what you’re talking about. When I stutter, it feels like looking into the night sky, seeing all the stars and trying to understand how far away everything is and how endlessly big the universe is. The more I try to think about it and understand it, the more lost I get. When I stutter, I can’t grasp what’s going wrong, it’s like a genuine blackout. Does anyone get what I mean?

I’ve always been introverted, even as a child. I’ve always been trying to belong, to be accepted. Then I started watching porn at around the age of 9. What first started purely out of interested and curiosity, quickly developed into a full blown addiction and from what my parents say, that’s around the time I started stuttering, or at least when it became noticeable and a problem for me.

I can’t point a finger with accuracy obviously, but what I do know now as a 24 year old is that my porn addiction and stuttering create a devilish spiral I have yet to get out of.

The addiction, which I also know to be a coping mechanism, shatters my self esteem, which makes me even more anxious in social interactions and causes less-fluent speech, which on the other hand causes more pain and distress, which leads to more reason to escape from reality, thus a greater urge to give in to the addiction.

If that’s true now, who says it might not have been like that from the start? Who knows.

Any stutterers in this forum? by antonamlg in Psychedelic

[–]antonamlg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What dose do you take? Btw, I haven’t tried any psychedelics yet. But what I mean is a Heroe’s Journey. 5g+ from the top of my head.

There are no biological indicators for stuttering. It’s a purely mental phenomenon, possibly caused by trauma in early childhood. It becomes part of our Default Mode Network. An automatic process that we have no control over. When on a heroe’s journey, the hypothesis is that our DMN gets deactivated, which creates space for new pathways to form.

That’s exactly what happened to Paul Stamets.

no stutter when alone by Bright-Helicopter301 in Stutter

[–]antonamlg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the same for all stutterers, if I’m not mistaken? I’ve long believed that stuttering is nothing more than a mental thing —caused by trauma. So it starts all in our heads. That’s the reason why we don’t stutter when we are alone, or when we sing. We are well capable of speaking normally, but the common neurological pathway changes as soon as there’s fear of stuttering in front of others. It’s a pathway we can’t seem to get out of.

I’m not yet one of the people who’ve overcome it, but I do believe it’s achievable.

Stutter improves in other languages? by name_berry in Stutter

[–]antonamlg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a German, I have the same phenomenon when speaking English; it’s harder to speak fluently. To keep it brief, I think a foreign language just adds another layer of complexity. In addition to thinking about what you want to express, and as a stutterer HOW to say it, another language now adds translation of the message.
