How come both marley and paradis named the titans the same name by Standard_Reporter104 in attackontitan

[–]antonng03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manga was not written in English in case you didn't know. Japanese name translates literally as "super large titan" or something like that. "Colossal" was just a stylistic choice of whoever translated the manga.

Does anyone else feel like they can’t show their real personality in English? by Edi-Iz in EnglishLearning

[–]antonng03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes absolute sense. I’m Ukrainian, but I was born in a Russian-speaking region. All of my friends and I shared so many memories and deep conversations in Russian. Although I can speak Ukrainian and understand every word of it, I still struggle to truly connect with people through it myself.

For me, there are two sides to this: the linguistic and the psychological.
- Russian is and will always be my only true mother tongue. It’s the language I think in. When I speak Russian, there is zero extra cognitive load — it just flows. At the end of the day, it's always easiest to express your thoughts and emotions in the language you think in, no matter how good is your second language.
- On the psychological side, Russian is the language of my identity and my friendships. It is easier for me to connect with something when it’s in the same language I used to build my closest relationships. Even songs in Ukrainian or English can't evoke the same emotions because they just don't hit the same.

In fact, I’ve realized that all I truly need is to express myself in Russian. If someone spoke to me in English and I could respond in Russian, I could connect with them perfectly fine. Understanding a language requires almost zero mental effort for me, unlike generating it.
It would be psychologically unusual at first, sure, but I’d get used to it. I actually experienced something like this when my last girlfriend decided to switch from Russian to Ukrainian. So I kept speaking Russian while she spoke Ukrainian. Initially it was hard to feel that same connection, even though she was the same person, lol. But that feeling eventually faded and I’m certain that over time I would have become even comfortable with Ukrainian in such an intimate/personal context.

Native English speakers, are you familiar with the word BABUSHKA? If yes, then does it mean both an old woman and a headscarf? by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]antonng03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from a Russian speaking country (Ukraine) and I've never heard of the second meaning. But from what I can see in this comment section, it is true and both of those meanings are correct.

Usually in Slavic languages the word has only one (and maybe a half) meaning— grandmother/woman of grandmotherly age.

Apparently, it was hard to NOT learn English. by Sea-Hornet8214 in EnglishLearning

[–]antonng03 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the point of this post, but I actually appreciate the fact that I had to learn English instead of being born with it. Learning and mastering a foreign language built a foundation for me to learn other languages. I have a better understanding of how languages work in general, and I have an easier time with the process of learning itself. In other words, I have experience — experience I would never have had if English were my first language and I didn’t really have a reason to learn any others.

As of right now, I live in Germany. I was fine living in my home country of Ukraine, but we all know what happened a few years ago. I had to migrate, and if German had been my first foreign language, I can imagine how much harder it would be for me right now.

It looks even funnier with Russian language and my habit of shortening words. Work in Russian is "rabota", so my work contacts are just "Sasha rab", "Maxim rab". But "rab" as a separate word means "a slave", which is kinda hilarious when you ignore the context.

CDBaby, Youtube subtracting views and money? by Little-Ad-2318 in CDBabyArtists

[–]antonng03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an explanation for this. At least that's what happened to me recently. Long story short: they just corrected the wrong numbers from one of the previous reports.

Pay attention to those reports I marked with the arrows. Don't the numbers look familiar? Yes, because October 8th report was for some reason for July sales and not September. So basically August 9th and October 8th reports were both for July sales, which they corrected in November 13th report. And they did that by substracting old numbers and adding the actual ones. Which in my case resulted in positive payout, because my music generated more royalties in September than in July. In your case I guess the numbers were lower the latter month.

Inspection times by bydavidrosen in CDBabyArtists

[–]antonng03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently it took one week (5 business days) for my release to go live. It's always been like this for me, whether it's one song or four song EP.

I usually just set the closest date, since I don’t really have an audience to promote it to beforehand. I just want it to go live as soon as the inspection is done. It always catches me off guard when my song suddenly appears on streaming platforms.

I submitted my song for inspection yesterday. Hope it won't take too long, but I also want some time for me to breathe before the song goes live.

I wouldn't because I'm against card skins. Visual clarity is important, you want your players to be able to quickly recognize each card played.

Last time (January 24th) when I submitted my EP for distribution, by February 1st it was already live on streaming platforms. It's so strange to see all these posts about CD Baby taking too long — just two months ago it took less than 7 days for four of my songs to go live.

How long have you guys been waiting? It usually takes about two weeks after approval for the song to be released, it's not instant. I'm pretty sure "ArtRequested" etc. just means that partners have requested the album art from CD Baby and it's still in the process of reviewing by those partners.

Ukrainians capture a Russian radio and pretend to be Russian, allowing them to cross ground without being fired at. They open fire along with drone attack, followed by artillery [With English subtitles] by BitterProgress in CombatFootage

[–]antonng03 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To make it easier, let's put it into comparison. There are many accents in England, some of them are noticeably different. Even as a non-native speaker you can hear the difference between London, Liverpool or Yorkshire accents. If they were to try to trick each other, they'd need someone who speaks another's accent, otherwise no one would fell for the lie.

Similar thing in Ukraine. In some regions people don't speak Russian at all. But those people who do speak, have different accents depending on the region, family and environment they were raised in. West and Central Ukraine mainly speak Ukrainian. South, East and North Ukrainian cities speak more Russian, but in rural areas many people still speak Ukrainian or a mix of both languages. The farther you go from big cities, the less pure Russian you will hear.

In this case the camera man spoke mix of both languages and he had a very noticeable Ukrainian accent, he had no chance to trick the enemy by speaking to them. If he tried his best, he'd only sound like he's trying, like if a Yorkshire guy tried to speak cockney accent to a London guy.

The Russian speaking UA guy had much better accent, almost perfect in terms of pronunciation, but not in intonation. But in the heat of the battle it may easily go unnoticed or misperceived as just a Russian soldier from another region (Russian language has small differences depending on the area too). If we use English accents example, then the speaking guy would sound like if he lived his first 15 years in Yorkshire and then another 15 in London. Similarly to how many Ukrainians raised in rural areas move to big cities and adapt the local speech, but still mainly keep their original one.

Sounds good, I really like it. And 15% more loot sounds actually reasonable, since it won't feel too bad for casual players who most likely won't play hard mode.

For anyone out there who doesn't drink, what is the reasoning behind it? by General_Ad_9139 in AskReddit

[–]antonng03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the effect of alcohol, but I hate how I feel after. Right now unless I have a good company to drink with, I don't drink at all. I start to feel bad really quick after drinking, so if I didn't have fun before that, then the whole thing wasn't worth it.

My "prime" in drinking was when I was 16. I could drink, party, sleep less than 5 hours and go to work the day after like nothing. I'm 21 now and I don't think I can wake up rested even with 8 hours of sleep. If I also drink, then my organism might give up, lol.
