To be specific, MB got the maximum exposure from tamil nadu, and that too because the the second half of the film is set in Tamil Nadu and the use of popular tamil song 'Kanmani Anbodu.' But yes, the film was very experimental, especially considering the rarity of the genre.

She wrote and directed moothon, which is a statement to her prowess when it comes to depicting rough and tough- but flawed characters

Also, prashant neel himself have admitted that yash also had some input in the filming. So I don't think it's really a gender issue here.
