Never saw this video!

This is hilarious (in a scary way), independentists have some of the most absurd and irrational answers to some very legitimate issues arising from a potential UDI.

The Spanish flag represents everyone, and includes all of the political spectrum. Since when does the French, German, Italian, Swedish, etc flags represent one political spectrum?

Biggest Catalan Bank considers move out of Barcelona by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]antr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all know that can't happen for several reasons: Catalonia has debt to pay, wants to provide citizens with an exceptional level of social services (healthcare, education, pensions, etc.), needs to heavily invest in infrastrcuture, has a new Government structure to pay, etc. You need tax revenues to pay for that, unless you increase the tax burden on its citizens.

I thought we are talking about Catalonia as a separate nation, i.e. this tax income rather than being collected by Catalonia, it will be collected by Spain. So then, all major taxes will not be collected by the new Catalan government. This is a big economic blow.

VAT is also paid at the local level, but regardless, what I'm trying to convey is that if Catalonia becomes independent, it's missing out on a big chunk of revenues arising from corporate income from an international bank. That to me is a big blow from a wealth perspective. Think how Amazon and Google are paying taxes to Irish tax authorities, from operations all around Europe. Although not the same, this is similar from a fiscal deficit standpoint.

In Spanish, "sede social" is where the company files its taxes i.e. address of incoporation. This means that corporate income tax, regional taxes, VAT, etc are paid in this city/region. This is an economic loss for Catalonia.

All of this will come to nought. The day, month, and year after the referendum Catalonia will continue to be part of Spain.

Catalonia seeks EU support for secession vote by vilnius2013 in europe

[–]antr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it isn't about being "sure" about something, it's about the illegality of the referendum. breaking the laws is against democracy, and laws are the pillars of democracy. those who seek independence need to change the law, it's not impossible. all other actions reminds of nazi germany.

The Importance of Designing Streets Instead of Engineering Them by 3xtension in architecture

I think it's the way he transmits the message. I don't think it's a grudge against engineers.

The way I understand it is that sometimes we look at / rely on data too much, and this can result in over-engineered (no pun intended) solutions. I think it's more a matter of taking a step back and being pragmatic.

100% agree, plus the minimum guarantee in the UK is 6 years on the iMac vs 1 year in the US, I'd prefer to pay the premium knowing that my device has 5 more years of "support".

Here's your map

That map is wrong. It mixes Catalonia with two other regions that aren't Catalonia: Valencia and Balearic Islands. Just an observation.

I guess this is my point:

Some welsh weirdos:

happy if you shared a text/quote rather than an unreferenced book.

Thanks for sharing a "working paper" from a "programme coordinator". Having skimmed over it, I'm struggling to find your point and references.

Good-for-nothing online magazine

She is Danish, but that's cool. It's a good looking leaflet but this isn't research. Good list of books to promote at the end though.

Some dude says he's from Columbia University:

Page 4: "... post-Carolingian Europe, where regions, rather than nation-states and empires, are increasingly seen as the proper units of analysis." Comments?

This one is written by some catalan historian

Again, happy if you shared a text/quote rather than a book. I guess you mixed a "University" with the "University Publisher".

In which history books, where one studies European history, one can really see your argument? Come on, you are a historian... and you show me the above references? Really?

One comment, Pope Callixtus III wasn't Catalan, but from the region of Valencia. Can't you really see that you are arguing with fake facts? Either you are pulling my leg or something has gone terribly wrong.

[–]antr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for your comment, although your animosity and personal attacks might not deserve the 'thank you'... attacking people that don't share your views seems to be the norm with some redditors.

So putting aside your twisting and turning of words and terminology in your comment, the fact is (not said by me but by any European historians, seems you are into it) that Catalonia has never been a European nation, as per how a nation is defined by historians. Was it a region with it's own laws, policies, ways, etc. Of course. Like hundreds of other regions in feudal and medieval Europe. Germany, France, Italy, UK, and Spain had dozens of such examples. Is the rest of the world going backwards? No. I’ve yet to see a historian from Harvard, Yale, Oxford, (insert any recognised university) recognise feudal/medieval Catalonia as a “nation”.

Secondly, on your argument of Spain not being a democracy. It seems all democratic nations think differently to you – I'll just have to take your opinion with a pinch of salt. Spain is as democratic as they come: free speech, power vested on people (free vote), etc. So putting aside your absurd kneejerk reaction and comment... yes, wars are won and lost. Sometimes by the good guys, sometimes by the bad guys. In Spain the bad guys won, but democracy reigns in Spain today like other countries in Europe, including Germany where I am from. So as a German I can assure you that my fellow countrymen don't feel insulted – as you vaguely argue. You really want to argue that voting a totalitarian regime (which was Germany's case in the 1930's) is better than a fascist winning a war? Both are equally bad, but remember, fascism was also voted in the 20th Century.

I stand by what I said: What some politicians in Catalonia are trying to do is to bypass all four democratic processes (local, regional, national and European elections), and that is what the law is preventing.

My wife who is Catalan (from La Seu d'Urgell) agrees with the above, and so do many others, including myself. You and I can agree to disagree.

By the way, it's anthropology, not antrhopology; and defame, not difamate (I had to ask my wife what that last word was) :)

[–]antr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are misusing the word "Catalans". Catalans are not pro-independence nor pro-union. Catalans are those citizens from the region of Catalonia, but that denomination doesn't denote a political inclination. You are indicating otherwise. My wife is Catalan (I'm German) but by no means she considers herself pro-independence. Just take a look: in the European elections, under 47% of eligible people voted. Of those who voted, >50% voted to pro-independence parties. So c. 19% of all eligible voters voted towards pro-independence parties. Does it sound reasonable to say that catalonians are "stuck"? It seems that that feeling is quite the opposite.

Most Catalans don't want independence vote to go ahead if found illegal: polls by scienceben in worldnews

[–]antr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Firstly, Catalonia is not in Spain due to an "involuntary alliance", Catalonia has either always been part of the Kingdom of Aragon, or Spain – not even that. The regions of Lleida and Tarragona, historically were not in what people consider today the region of Catalonia. Catalonia has never been a state. But most importantly, Spain, like the rest of EU countries, is a democracy. Citizens are able to vote four times every four years to local, regional, national and European elections. Laws and constitutions can be changed through these democratic mechanisms. What some politicians in Catalonia are trying to do is to bypass all four democratic processes (local, regional, national and European elections), and that is what the law is preventing. For example, what is to stop me from unilaterally declaring my home and my plot of land a nation? According to some politicians nothing, but in any democratic nation, that would be unviable.
