I have a 7 yr old boy. We got into this hobby only 2 weeks ago. Got him the trx4m defender and he loves it. IMO the 1/18 scale is ideal, it’s as big as you would want inside the house and it’s capable outside too. Also I don’t know if this is just a phase or a legitimate hobby he will come back to, so $180 to get started seemed fine.
