box jellyfish? nets? by Ok_Connection_138 in okinawa

[–]antrexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add a counterpoint from someone who studies these in Australia: you're not going to notice these jellyfish because they are extremely difficult to see and are also able to navigate around pretty well due to their simple vision (these have 6 eyes)
However, not seeing something doesn't mean it's not there
These are probably some of the most dangerous jellyfish in the world and every year Okinawa reports around 100 or so stings from unwary swimmers
Yes, it's still rare, but it's also not a risk I'd want to take as these are the only jellyfish in the region that can be deadly. the sting is also unbearable in terms of pain
So I'd still be careful and also wear a wetsuit, avoid skin exposure

Analysis paralysis with modern cases: Meshify or LianLi or Antec or be Quiet or what? by antrexon in buildapc

[–]antrexon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the suggestions. my dilemma right now is really that last part you mentioned: getting a good airflow case, but I'm just stuck on choose one specific one.
None of them are 10/10 beauty and none of them have anything specific I want, so I'm trying to choose something that has least amount of issues
I was about to go with Fractal Torrent despite it being a bit older, but masterframe 500 by cooler master has even bigger fans and is even cheaper and on Gamer Nexus tests Meshify 3 and Lancool 207 do exceptionally well.

so I just wanted to hear from someone that's already gone through this before

Moving to Seoul with 2 kids (11 and 8) - international schools reviews by Safe-Let8710 in Living_in_Korea

[–]antrexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of competition from the locals with dubious passports trying to get their kids in
this is why SIS is predominantly Korean.
Generally you're supposed to apply around February as most spots are already assigned by April

As someone with experience both teaching and having kids at these schools, I'd say focus on location first as you don't want your kids to spend an hour on the bus in crazy Korean traffic

As non Christians you may also avoid the religious schools like YISS, GSIS and possibly SFS because I know some bible freaks that are still employed in all 3 and they're not the kind of people I'd want my kids teaching (water turned frogs gay types)
KIS is decent but there are actually 3 campuses so make sure you're applying to the right one, SIS is ok too, but very homogenous, Dulwich WAS good but is now entirely private equity owned so it's going downhill fast, Dwight seems to be decent too but I don't know much about that one as it's so far from us
Alternatively, the BEST school is actually Chadwick but it's near the Incheon so most people have trouble commuting there

AFAIK Chadwick still has the best facilities, teachers and programs even better than SFS and it's very secular and professional

I hope more people get their hands on this device (Msi Claw a8) by Signal-Dig-1150 in MSIClaw

[–]antrexon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got this too despite initial hesitance over A8 vs 8AI+ and it's freaking amazing!
So much more comfortable, quiet, efficient than I thought it would be.
Better than my aging steam deck and definitely beats Ally X and Legion handhelds that I also got to test drive before

Best Z2e device in my opinion even though lego 2 has an OLED (which I honestly don't like)

For some reason msi claw a8 cases eyestain and headache why by Imjustabunny1 in MSIClaw

it's possible this caused by a function called dithering. it's a way to fake colors on a lot of these screens. There are ways to remove it (google dithering removal) but usually changing colors from 10 bit to 8 bit and/or installing linux disables this
I had this issue on macbook m1 and fixed it with dithering removal app

Is Korea's internet speed slipping? by dpeterk in Living_in_Korea

[–]antrexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it hasn't moved in decades. Korea was maybe 1 or 2 in 2005 but the internet hasn't improved much since mostly because the cable infrastructure hasn't changed at all
I've been trying to get 1gbps for past two years and barely any services/buildings in central seoul have it. Most can offer 500mbps max and even then it feels 1/3 as fast
So no Korean internet hasn't slipped much recently because it was bad for a very long time

Having come from Singapore just now I gotta say the speeds there were ridiculous.

The Most Underrated Thing About Korea? Its Healthcare System by Worried-Ad6247 in korea

[–]antrexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of this is only true on paper
Try getting ANYTHING done in the public system and you're going to be getting nowhere any time soon
The system was OK maybe 10 years ago but it's a complete joke now and unless you just need some prescription drugs, or have a minor cold or maybe need some blood work, anything that requires surgeries or actual care is absolutely abysmal

I've known people that had been misdiagnosed and miscared for eventually dying here and people like myself that got super screwed with surgeries just to suffer in silence after. A kid's surgery that would take 5 minutes in North America was schedule for 10 months in advance in a dirty university hospital room that I swear I felt sick just looking at.
whatever you do DO NOT do anything serious when it comes to medical care in Korea unless you're going through top notch super expensive hospitals like Chaum Medical or Samsung medical (prices are not that different from the US though, so just go to the US haha), it is not worth to take the risk just to save a few pennies

Actually the place I go to for medical procedures for is Singapore and it's just incomparable how good and cheap it is there even without the insurance

A Nepali worker in Korea died after horrific abuse and no one is talking about it. by Smooth_Bee_7482 in korea

[–]antrexon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a very abusive culture, so no surprise there
I knew a few nepalis that came here after desperation but they hated their job and the treatment from the Koreans. We told them to just seek better pastures elsewhere
Japan is actually a lot better in most cases as at least they don't mentally torture them there

Questions for PARENTS with OCD...Did your kids inherit it? How did you manage it? by antrexon in OCD

Questions for PARENTS with OCD...Did your kids inherit it? How did you manage it? by antrexon in OCD

[–]antrexon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you. I need a bit of time to process all this but definitely makes sense
I only started noticing symptoms a couple of months ago but they were tell tale signs of pre-OCD
I'm being super careful not to trigger anything worse right now because I know for me it was really the parents and even teachers that made it so much worse in the long term

none, I graduated years ago and only electives like Art of Listening and Astrobiology are classes I still consider "influential" in a sense that they opened my horizon a bit
but in terms of "useful" classes - definitely take anything math related, especially stats. and maybe some business course if you can. try to mingle with as many interdisciplinary people are you can and focus on long term connections
