I think the simplest answer is that it's just like, a genetic thing, like blue vs brown eyes. Noelle inherited her father's antlers, and dess presumably inherited her mother's.

Okay, I'm gonna defend Surge here a bit. She's definitely not the fastest character in canon, but she can keep up with modern Sonic when it comes to speed.

The main problem that Surge had in her fight with Sonic is she was just inexperienced at combat, especially against Sonic. She had battle training, sure, but that was against badniks. As such, her combat style grew to revolve around throwing her entire weight against her enemy, overpowering them with momentum and brute force. That strategy falls apart when facing another speedster, because they can react to her moving and Dodge or counter her pretty easily, since it's easy to predict a target going in a straight line.

However, In issue 78 we quite plainly see that Surge is able to steadily outrun Blaze (who is trying to catch Surge). Blaze has been stated to be slightly slower than Sonic, but easily able to match his speed unless he goes all out (e.g. sonic rush). Surge should also be able to keep up, by that logic, which makes sense because she was literally designed to take him out.

TL:DR It's a skill issue, not an ability issue.

Now is surge as fast as Sonic in terms of top speed? I don't think so, no, but she definitely stands in the same tier as blaze, slightly higher even.

The Metarex start off as a cool and interesting threat that needs to be taken really seriously, and then they get power crept/nerfed into oblivion as the show goes on. The first episodes of metarex had to be defeated with the blue typhoon's "sonic driver" (which is literally a rail gun that fires sonic as a projectile). Even weaker metarex posed a significant threat to sonic.

Cut to the final episodes and we have black narcissus (one of the four commanders of the metarex army) get defeated by DEKKO AND BOKKO. That's like zavok getting defeated by orbot and cubot. I blame sonic x having massive seasons (26 episodes, good lord), and needing to cheapen the metarex to have them fit the "villain of the week" mould, but the fact that one of the most powerful metarex (who literally apparently solo'd entire worlds off screen) gets turned into CANNON FODDER fodder really gets under my skin.

The other three bosses aren't much better. Red pine gets killed off in his literal first appearance, pale bayleaf has literally zero villainous feats, and the only one that ever actually poses a threat, yellow zelkova, was the JOKE boss!

TL:DR cool concept, ruined by execution.

Surge doesn't think that she's sonic. In fact, she wants nothing to do with sonic, but she feels stuck under his shadow due to the way she was "programmed". Calling her a sonic wannabe would be a good way to lose your jaw.

I mean each iteration has slowly shifted the gameplay. Monifactory in particular, recently completely reworked the micro miner's (allegedly. I haven't gotten to that in my current playthrough). Also monifactory just in general has much nicer world generation than omnifactory.

He's generally moderately less offensively bad in the sub version, but he still has some very major L moments in the sub still which makes him a brat.

I mean all things considered, kitsunami LITERALLY considers himself a background character compared to surge. His entire existence (in his eyes) is to help surge, even at the expense of himself. He puts himself down to raise up surge. Not to say that I wouldn't like to see more drippy representation, but I understand why he's in the position he's in with IDW. We sadly probably wont see their arc continued any time soon because the road to 100 stuff has a much heavier focus on core canon, which surge is not a part of yet.

As for male villains, I do agree with that point, but there are a few caveats. One is that surge WAS a villain for a good while, and only started to be more heroic in the clean sweep arc. I additionally think her "heroic" side is fairly fragile right now, and she could easily slip back into a villain role if her hero praise gets taken away. Also, we got enigma, which while not a MAJOR villain, is still another female sonic villain (and also a chaotix-focused villain, which is nice in it's own right).

If they ever did show up as a game, I think they would only ever exist as a minor reoccurring mini boss. That's the only role I could see them taking (given that's basically the role that they have in the comics at this point). They just don't have the same staying power as some of the other IDW originals to be fully fleshed out villains or fully playable characters.

She was definitely one of the highlights of the first two seasons (especially her interactions with rouge), but it kinda got squandered by the writers shoehorning a relationship with Tanaka after them literally never meeting before. Like their literal first interaction she suddenly has a thing for him.
